alright, I'm officially scared
I just viewed the trailer for "Jesus Camp" and I am scared!

They are actually pledging allegiance to the "Christian Flag"! So tell me, where is all the righteous outrage over pledging allegiance to a flag other than the US flag?...or even displaying a flag other than the US flag? I don't know that the Hitler Youth went through this rigorous a brainwashing.

In one scene a child speaks of having been 'saved' at age 5 because he wanted more out of life!!! They are talking about being 'soldiers of God'.

Another scene speaks about the Palestinians sending their kids to camps and teaching them with hand grenades so we need to send our kids to be equally fanatical! And we're talking about young kids. I don't think I saw any over the age of 12.....wailing, gyrating, chanting, crying....

It is VERY scary. I don't know that I would be able to sit through the whole movie but I guess I need to so to be prepared for what lies ahead for America.

25. that's an odd choice for an example, considering Billy Graham
was definitely not a fundamentalist whackjob. he was, probably the most level-headed evangelist america produced (I know, that ain't saying much when you compare him to the others)

If this is what is happening to America, it's time to look for somewhere else to live.

26. They have been around doing this since I was a kid.
That was years ago. I am not sure if there are more now or we just see them more now. With the power the Far right have got it maybe they are just in our faces more. After all, can we tell the difference in Jonestown people or the taliban. All zealots and scary. I have seen them in cities and we used to go hear them in Boston and I had them in grade school and high school so I am un-sure if this is growing or what. Get them young and cram it in and this is what you get.

8. Yes, it is frightening,
but, taken into a larger context, they do represent a small minority:

Focusing their lens on a Pentecostal children’s minister named Becky Fischer who runs a camp for kids in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, they weave her Pentecostal fundamentalism with onscreen statements about Evangelicals. The implication is made that Pastor Fischer is a prime example of Evangelical Christians’ beliefs and practices. This is not only untrue but it also leads to a pervasive misunderstanding. The vast majority of Evangelical Christians do not identify with either the practices, worship, theology or fundamentalism of the Pentecostal movement as it is portrayed by Becky Fischer and the Christ Triumphant Church of Pastor Carol Koch." - CinemaInFocus

What bothers me the most is seeing the children being brainwashed like that. I want my children to be "children" - they will have to deal with adult issues soon enough.

15. They tend to become parents at 15.
My step-daughter went to a christian school where they pledged allegiance to the christian flag every day. But they were mostly harmless people, except for constantly saying "praise jesus" and "jesus is lord" all the time. My wife sent her there because they teach phonics and arithmetic, instead of the crap they teach in the public schools these days. It didn't hurt her.

Amazing how many of the girls are pregnant before they finish high school, though. And then they all say in their yearbook they want to go to Liberty and become missionaries.

27. too many broad brush statements confirm one is stupid
Edited on Thu Sep-14-06 02:51 PM by Lerkfish
boy, it sure does ring true.

:) (I'm parroting you, not saying I'm calling you stupid)

here's a test: do you consider buddhists stupid? Do you consider Wiccans stupid? Do you consider muslims stupid?
Do you consider Shintoist stupid? Do you consider jews stupid?

if you only consider christians stupid (as a whole group) but none of the others I've mentioned, then you're making a broad brush statement.
Also, there are many liberal christians right here on DU that would be willing to match their wits against yours at any time.

18. Hitler Youth is an appropriate comparison. These kids are being
brainwashed. They aren't being taught critical thinking skills. They aren't being taught love. They aren't being taught social justice.
They are being trained as an army.

Jesus would weep to see this.
