Great diary - follow the links - they are wonderful.

Newsbusters first demanded an apology from MSNBC and Keith Olbermann following Keith telling the Bush Administration to stick it. Now, that the ratings are up, way up, they are literally crapping all over themselves.

<snip>
The rightwingers will continue to try and compare ratings and show that Keith's numbers are in the basement compared to other shows. But here is the problems with that.

1. They love to use total viewers, they ignore the "money group". Remember it is all about the $$$. Keith is growing more of the "money group" over time than the other shows.

2. More people tune in after Hardball to watch Keith and then the tune out as Scarborough comes on. Don't think Dan Abrams doesn't know this. Have you noticed that Joe is getting a tad more critical of Bush recently?

1. Watching Keith....
With practice, it is not difficult to turn on Countdown within seconds of the show starting, and then hit the remote quickly, before Joe S. starts the shpiel about his show.

3. It's a game Mrs. t and I play every night
we don't want to see tweety or dead intern joe so we trry to time changing channels to just miss them. But she cheats at the beginning of Countdown leaving the local news on for 30 seconds or so just long enough to get tweety's drooling face off the screen.

9. A game at our house, too. When Rita was on, we tried to
change the channel before Keith actually said her name. lol

It's not quite as bad with Joe but we still try to avoid him.

24. Ever notice how Joe always starts off with a story..
That's not offensive to Keith's viewers. It usually takes him about 10 minutes to turn back into a raving RW idiot.

26. I never have because I don't watch anything on that channel but Keith.
You know what's weird, Joe did GREAT commentary on those ad hoc panels in the run up to the election. He's very smart and he wasn't very wingy at all.

His persona on his own show is rabid right wing and I don't think we've watched his show more than two or three times. It's terrible.

21. I have to work on that technique
I have to go from national ABC news to local CBS. A couple of times, I've ended up watching Katie the Cute's closing shtick of sitting on the end of the desk. Yargh.

29. From what I've read and heard, he has a helluva flying saliva problem
and is apparently rawther well-known for routinely spraying his guests. Perhaps that's the one liberal thing about him. Like you said - "Ewww."

19. Jeez, I sometimes watch all of them.
I think the Hardball-Countdown block is really solid. I like it that Hardball is all politics - the last part of Countdown is always a drag because I don't care about celebrities. I don't mind Joe that much, though I don't always agree with him. He did have that "Is Bush an Idiot?" segment and he recently wrote a pretty serious critique of the Republicans in Congress.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0610.forum.html
Joe is one of seven conservatives linked to here writing about how they want the Republicans to lose the House this year.

5. Or just Tivo it
I don't know how Tivo numbers are calculated into the overall count - does anyone know? If you just record it but don't watch it, does it still get counted? I record it every day and watch most days. But I've always wondered if it goes towards the count even on days when I don't get to watch it.

Even with Tivo you still get that first 30-60 seconds or so with Joe. I usually reach for the remote at that point even to avoid just 30 seconds of him! (he looked like he'd had a few drinks the other night - I think it was Friday night - anyone else notice?)

13. Yeah I hate that I have to see Joe's face... or Chris'...
and I hate that the station is left on MSNBC after it's done taping the 7 p.m. show... grrr.

Maybe I should program something to tape at 8, just to avoid that. :D

14. the numbers they are talking about are Nielsen numbers
if you're not a Nielsen household, nothing counts.

However, there is a rumor that TiVo is making our habits available to advertisers so....if you TiVo a show more advertisers might buy spots.

Since money makes the world go round, if KO is making big bucks on ads, he'll likely stay on the air.

One more point, Salon did an interview with KO last week (or so). When asked if he was getting heat to tone it down from "above" KO said just the opposite. He said his corporate masters (my words) watch the ratings and know ratings = money so they are encouraging him to be more critical of the admin.

There you go. We can do our part by getting everyone we know to watch KO.

7. I do exactly the same thing.
I recently found out that Cable users and Dish users viewing habits are noted. I had to have my dish fixed and the repairman actually told me which shows I like to watch. Go Figure!

10. Getting to the remote in time was more critical when Rita followed Keith
I can tolerate 5 seconds of Dead Intern Joe but even one syllable out of that evil missing white girl stalker and I couldn't help but scream. I still dive for the remote, but it's not nearly as urgent, IMO.

I acquired the habit of locating the remote as soon as the #1 story started so I'd be ready to escape. Still do it with Joe but it's not so life-or-death.

Anyway, it would be good to post the time slot, I might not be the only one ignorant.

23. The writer at Kos is correct -- people ARE getting sick of the BS
and the lies and the fearmongering. Why did Keith's commentary on 9/11 get so much attention? Because people KNOW when they are hearing the truth, and we are hungry for the truth.
