My only freeper friend is jealous of millionaires. Should I even bother?
He always talks about rich men and what buffoons they are, and how he would do it all differently and better if he was rich. Should I even try to explain to him that the people he votes for are the ones actively working to prevent him from getting rich himself? Lowering taxes certainly didn't make him any richer! I talk to him because there are other subjects unrelated to politics that we are both interested in and we get a lont well while talking about those. But if he drifts towards politics I end the conversation. What would you do? If you would try to show him the error of his political ways, what would you say?

1. Eh, I don't think that's so bad....
Maybe it'll keep him motivated.

2. honestly, I am not sure if there is anything you can do
the people I know who are like this would rather chop off their own arms than have to pay "some lazy bum" a single dime of their "hard earned money" (whether they actually earned it or not).

You could try though. perhaps if you showed him that Republicans tend to spend way more than Democrats and how, not only do they enable the rich to get richer, but that along with the overspending, they are not bringing in enough money because of things like tac breaks. Essentially, tell him the Righties are like someone with a bunch of credit cards and no way to pay them off, and that by voting for them, WE the people are paying off their debt.

5. Thanks... he has 2 justifications that he verbalizes for voting Republican
One is that he says, "Democrats and Republicans are really the same thing now. They're both capitalist pig parties. The difference is that Democrats claim that they aren't. Republicans are more honest about that."

The other is that he says he always votes for tax cuts or whoever will lower his taxes.

12. That's what he said. "They're all capitalist pigs. The Democrats just won'
admid it. At least the Republicans are honest. That's why I vote for them."

I thought about arguing that Republicans are far more dishonest than Democrats, but so far I haven't started.

7. Ask him how he feels about Cancer.
Then ask him how he feels about supporting a party that CUT FUNDING FOR CANCER RESEARCH. Ask him how much he plans to enjoy his tax cuts when he's puking up his guts during chemotherapy.

16. I think you just need to explain that
a - they are not being more honest in just about every way I can imagine.

b - they are not really cutting his taxes. At all. They give him $300 (or whatever) and he's already spent way more than that on his cost of living because of RW policies, not to mention the fact that those "savings" in his taxes are just being added on to the debt that all of us peon Americans (including your friend) will have to pay. So he saved $300 and spent several thousand.

it sounds like he's just lazy and greedy (sorry) and repeating the RW talking points as an excuse. Does he also call himself a Libertarian and claim to want to throw out all incumbents?

9. I had to listen to a rethug I knew rant about a lousy 50 bucks
our democratic state government "took" from her. She got so ugly about dems that I let her have it with both barrels. (verbally that is)

I decided then and there to have little if anything to do with rethugs ever again.

So, IMO, let your "friend" go. I just don't think it's possible to be real and true friends with such greedy and vindictive people.

19. Get a glass and a bottle of beer. Then ask him if he wants you to pour
it liberally or conservatively. Then explain the difference. With the conservative model tell him the little bit in the glass is for the masses of regular folk and the larger amount in the bottle is for the millionaires. With the liberal model tell him the majority of the beer in the glass is for the masses and the little bit of backwash left over in the bottle is for the millionaires.

18. He sounds like a prime candidate for conversion to socialism.
Edited on Thu Sep-14-06 02:22 PM by Selatius
The problem is I don't necessarily trust socialists who became socialists simply because of hatred of the rich. I'd rather they come to the conclusion that capitalism is not sustainable as a long-term solution through contemplation, not through anger and jealousy of the capitalist baron.
