Dick Armitage: Novak is the one being deceptive

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/13/AR2006091302066.html

<snip>

Armitage, in an interview yesterday, said he stood by his account and disputed Novak's.

...

Novak said further that "Armitage did not slip me this information as idle chitchat. . . . He made clear that he considered it especially suited for my column." In an interview, Novak said that Armitage effectively described it as stock, Washington-insider information of the sort that often appeared in the column.

Armitage, in reply, said his disclosure to Novak was inadvertent and noted that Novak himself described it as "offhand" in an Oct. 1, 2003, column. Armitage said he could not recall whether he identified the CIA division where Wilson's wife worked. He added that he rejects any suggestion he was deliberately trying to plant the information, explaining that "I had no reason to wish him any ill" and that Wilson "was simply verifying what had already been reported through State channels."

Lobbyist Ken Duberstein, a friend of Armitage who helped arrange Novak's meeting with him, said yesterday that Armitage's account precisely matches what Armitage told him in October 2003.

1. Why was the meeting arranged? That's where the big hole
in all this is.

6. Right.
Novak says that he had never interviewed Armitage before. He mentions that, "During his quarter of a century in Washington, I had no contact with Armitage before our fateful interview. I tried to see him in the first 2 years of the Bush administration, but he rebuffed me -- summarily and with disdain, I thought." (9-13-06)

You have put the focus exactly where it should be.

2. Isn't Armitage a PNAC signatory?
Or do I have him mixed up with one of the other fascist thugs?

12. I have never liked Armitage. He always seemed oily and

crooked. I do not buy his "Mr. Innocent" shtick. I don't care if he is known as a "gossip", this was deliberate and he should go down for it - unless he wants to turn states evidence in exchange for a lesser sentence, but only a "lesser" one...

3. Send 'em into the Coliseum, let 'em work it out ...
... of course, having a few lions to keep them company wouldn't hurt.

4. I think Armitage could take Novak pretty handily.
The lions would be a little more tricky.

7. Yesterday on the radio, I heard
that Armitage would be joining Wilson/Plame on the suit. But I don't have any more details.

8. Not joining Wilson/Plame. Joining Libby, Cheney, etc. Wilson/
Plame added Armitage to their lawsuit targets list.

11. I believe Armitage
for one big reason. From what I have read, he's very straight forward and doesn't mince words. According to Tom Ricks book Fiasco, Armitage and Powell knew the invasion was unsupported by the facts and a bad idea.

19. Yeah, but don't let their periodic bouts of moral clarity fool you ...
Powell and Armitage can lie as smoothly as the rest of those ghouls and would sell their mother for a little more power and money. ;)
