Alert: Health question: Anyone else out there suffering from
an unbearable nasal drip of thick, sometimes bloody mucous, that doesn't go away even with antibiotics? At least half of my family, living in different part of Maryland and PA (some having no contact with other members of the family) are suffering with these symptoms. This malady is very draining and leaves one feeling extremely tired. It is much worse at night and often causes choaking while sleeping, especially among the little tots in the family. Some have been to the doctors with no relief. I have had a series of blood and urine tests that were negative, ran a course of prescribed antibiotics and nothing changed except for an upset stomach caused by the antibiotics. My immediate family is now entering the second week of the ailment. I was just wondering if there any others out there suffering the same ailment and maybe have ideas about relief or cures. Thanks.

1.  My Mom (in NV) had this a while back.
They never figured out what it was. It finally cleared but it was very strange.

Personally, I think a lot of this shit is from pollution. WHO KNOWS what chemical toxic soup we're breathing, drinking, or subject to in bu$hit's polluted world where polluters rule. Then, there's climate change, which is bound to make it all worse.

3. Could it be caused by a mold?
We've had breathing problems since our basement flooded.

4. There's Some Nasty URI All Over
Around here (SF Bay Area), it starts with a sore throat and a bad headache and turns into sinus congestion/post nasal drip and can become bronchitis (not much of a cough, but what there is is productive) with weakness and general malaise. Worst of it lasts a week; takes about two weeks to really be over it for normal people (I have kidney disease etc, so I'm in my third week).

I had the no-shit signs of a bacterial infections so I took a 10-day course of Avelox and am irrigating my sinuses with saline, and drinking a lot of tea, and resting.

5. I used to suffer..
... from sinus infections routinely. In my case, they were related to allergies, thusly.

When you are allergic to inhalants, your sinuses become inflamed. They produce excess mucus. Mucus is a great bacterial culture medium, and the raw inflamed sinus tissues are easily invaded by the bacteria.

Once you get into this syndrome, it is very hard to overcome it. You have to

1) reduce your allergic reactions either by taking medications or reducing exposure to allergens

2) clear the inflammation in your sinuses. the quickest way to do so is using the inhalant steroids, such as flonase, beconase, vancenase, etc. flonase was very effective for me, and seemed to have no side effects. BUT - squirting these things up your nose is pointless if your sinuses are full of drainage. So, see 3 :)

3) get the gunk out of your head. the best way is with a neti pot - a gizmo that lets you draw warm saline water into each sinus and literally wash it out. If you can only do one thing, do this. You don't even really have to get a neti pot, (about $10), you can use a bowl of warm water and do it that way.

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on DU. I'm speaking from 10 years of miserable experience!
