Republicans and college football

The republicans have taken corruption to a new level compared to college football. They not only buy the players, they also buy and control the game officials, the sportswriters, the radio/TV networks, and the NCAA rules committee.

Fred Barnes (or was it Kristol) of The Weekly Standard once compared elections to college football. Winning is all that counts. Makes no difference how you do it. There is a major problem with that Fred; Once you win, you have to govern. It's no longer a game. The health and well being of 300 million Americans are at stake. After the republicans win the game, they have no idea how to repair the sprained ankles, wash the uniforms, repair the broken bones, or fix the damaged equipment. In between games, all they do is take care of the rich alumni and give band aids and aspirin to the players. They can win so many games, but eventually the team will end up broken and destroyed.

That repubs treat it like a football game - something to be won and not something where you need to pick the best candidate. As an example, I can't tell you how annoying it is to hear people saying they're voting against Ben Nelson because of abortion eventhough Ben has always been pro-life and is the only candidate endorsed by "Right to Life". Don't people even pay attention to the issues and the candidates? Do they just blindly believe that anyone with an "R" by his name believes all the same stupid sh*t they believe? Just like they will cheer for anyone with a red "N" on his helmet?

"Knowledge" Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously, a good book on this subject is "Beer and Circus" by Murray Sperber. He was the Indiana U. professor that criticized Bobby Knight and recieved death threats in return. A very good read.
