miserably. The new CEO chosen to fix it was Lou Gerstner, a man who previously led Nabisco.

The financial world sat back and said, "How could a cracker man run a company that was about computers"?

He actually did so and brilliantly and since I had some IBM stock at the time I did really well too. If I had put all my eggs in the IBM basket, I would be a multi-millionaire today. I didn't because I didn't believe he could do it either.

IMHO, I think what happened was a fluke, but it became a rule in the financial world. Sure CEOs can skip around from industry to industry and succeed they said. Lou did. Apparently it's not true. I guess Lou was a oddity.
