1. Security Analysis of the Diebold AccuVote-TS Voting Machine
Abstract This paper presents a fully independent security study of a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine, including its hardware and software. We obtained the machine from a private party. Analysis of the machine, in light of real election procedures, shows that it is vulnerable to extremely serious attacks. For example, an attacker who gets physical access to a machine or its removable memory card for as little as one minute could install malicious code; malicious code on a machine could steal votes undetectably, modifying all records, logs, and counters to be consistent with the fraudulent vote count it creates. An attacker could also create malicious code that spreads automatically and silently from machine to machine during normal election activities — a voting-machine virus. We have constructed working demonstrations of these attacks in our lab. Mitigating these threats will require changes to the voting machine's hardware and software and the adoption of more rigorous election procedures.

basis! :D i sent him this letter:

This couldn't be more crucial. Our votes are our voices. Please visit this website and watch the video and please send this to everyone you know,

http://itpolicy.princeton.edu/voting/videos.html

Main Findings The main findings of our study are:

1. Malicious software running on a single voting machine can steal votes with little if any risk of detection. The malicious software can modify all of the records, audit logs, and counters kept by the voting machine, so that even careful forensic examination of these records will find nothing amiss. We have constructed demonstration software that carries out this vote-stealing attack.

2. Anyone who has physical access to a voting machine, or to a memory card that will later be inserted into a machine, can install said malicious software using a simple method that takes as little as one minute. In practice, poll workers and others often have unsupervised access to the machines.

3. AccuVote-TS machines are susceptible to voting-machine viruse! s - computer viruses that can spread malicious software automatically and invisibly from machine to machine during normal pre- ! and post-election activity. We have constructed a demonstration virus that spreads in this way, installing our demonstration vote-stealing program on every machine it infects.

4. While some of these problems can be eliminated by improving Diebold's software, others cannot be remedied without replacing the machines' hardware. Changes to election procedures would also be required to ensure security.

http://itpolicy.princeton.edu/voting/

I URGE YOU to vote absentee on a paper ballot and take a picture of your ballot before you send it in.

Remember to pass this email on. Thank you!

As I said, tho, the problem is the "deafness" in the Dem leadership. I will have my fingers crossed that you can get through to the pol you know, and have it slide through to Dean.

The fact that we know it is good, but not creating much change.

Maybe you can slide in a wakeup call. :hi:

96. It's not really messed up.
You just need to let it complete downloading before you play it.

If you pause it, and on the bar that indicates the progress, you see a little shadow going forward, then it is downloading. And if you wait until it downloads, and then play it, you won't have any audio problems.

I think because of that wretched night, a lot of us would have started smoking again, or worse, without Democratic Underground. We all watched as the tally flipped percentages, right before our eyes. It was surreal, like something out of the Twilight Zone.

Sorry you had to go through that alone. Definitely one of the worst nights we've ever been through, knowing that hell would continue to rampage through this country and the world for another 4 years.

Here's a belated hug from all of us, I'm sure.

remember the DNC just got through recommending internet voting and DREs.

In the states some of the fiercest allies for paperless electronic voting have been Democrats. In GA and Maryland in particular, where the Diebold TS machines tested in the Princeton research are used.

However, I wouldn't want to present this in court. The video is jerky, almost like a series of pictures. Things disappear and reappear again.

That said, this is very instructive to people who don't understand technology.

It's very easy to cover up malware because it can be made virtually invisible and most people don't understand that what's on that screen may have nothing to do with the actual functioning of the program.

Or even that the program can function perfectly legitimately, but the results (data) could be corrupted after the fact.

Without clear safeguards, crystal-clear traceability and a bulletproof security protocol, almost anything could happen.

And some say it already has.

124. But the real problem STILL is....
yes, it's true someone could crack open a machine and swap the memory card.

BUT I wish they would mention in this video, that the FOLKS AT DIEBOLD could put malicious software on the memory cards to begin with. election results could be rigged, right under the noses of election officials and they would have no way to know.

Outsiders. Insiders. both are threats, but it is much easier and more likely that an INSIDER would do this, because they know how the system works, they wrote the software, they have access to the machines and the cards.

130. Plus Diebold has hired convicted felons in the past...
SAN FRANCISCO -- At least five convicted felons secured management positions at a manufacturer of electronic voting machines, according to critics demanding more stringent background checks for people responsible for voting machine software.

Voter advocate Bev Harris alleged Tuesday that managers of a subsidiary of Diebold, one of the country's largest voting equipment vendors, included a cocaine trafficker, a man who conducted fraudulent stock transactions and a programmer jailed for falsifying computer records.

The programmer, Jeffrey Dean, wrote and maintained proprietary code used to count hundreds of thousands of votes as senior vice president of Global Election Systems, or GES. Diebold purchased GES in January 2002.

According to a public court document released before GES hired him, Dean served time in a Washington state correctional facility for stealing money and tampering with computer files in a scheme that "involved a high degree of sophistication and planning."
