Kirkuk: The potential spark for civil war

Kirkuk, Iraq's oil-rich northern city, is probably the most critical area for the future of Iraq, but the least covered by international media.

Historically, the city accommodates people from Iraq's three biggest ethnic groups: Turkmen, Arabs and Kurds. The groups have been engaged in a prolonged dispute over the city's identity, with each side claiming ownership of the 5000-year-old metropolis.

Being the centre of Iraq's northern oil industry, the Kurds see the Kirkuk region as vital for their long awaited "independent state of Kurdistan". Attacks on the infrastructure of the Kirkuk oil industry have been ongoing since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

A referendum is to be held in late 2007 to decide the city's fate. But Arabs and Turkmen say the Kurds are using their political new power and the support of the US to manipulate it.

The situation has provoked Kirkuk's non-Kurdish communities and plunged the city into a fierce war.

Do you think, for one moment, the Kurds would wast their money on this project if the monies didn't originate from the 7-8 billion Rumsfeld et al. lost in Iraq?

8. This is one of those stories...

that the media will not talk about. Kurdistan has never had any intention of being part of "One Iraq". The only reason they don't openly declare independence now, is knowing Turkey will not stand for it (going to war to prevent it). Another story they will not touch is the fact that many Shia are expecting to have a full blown civil war when we leave and are looking for revenge on the Sunni.
There are so many variables in this region, but some things are pretty obvious. When things happen the press will act as if there was no indication of them coming to fruition. Like the neo-con agenda to control the mid-east. :hide:

10. I see, Bush has redeployment to Kurdistan and says still in Iraq.

So, if it is really that peaceful, after calling the Dems Cut and Run, Bush does exactly what Murtha has proposed, moves them out of the area of civil war, and says he still has the troops in Iraq.

Who is the party of no ideas? Bush has done all kinds of things the Dems have suggested. In fact anything he has done right was a Dem idea. He just slimes the Dems and renames the action.
