go to broadband.com and see.

As long as you have a view to the south you can always get a dish...

21. Yep. I pay $8 for dial-up. The cheapest broadband is more than $50. I
have looked at EVERY possibility and they are either way too expensive or not available in my area.

When people post links ONLY - many, many of us cannot take advantage of it. The OP needs to put a short description of the video content.

44. Answer: use DownThemAll software
I'm on a verizon wireless laptop card which isn't much better than dial up yet
at least until my area goes broadband

But anyway

I DL'd DownThemAll from, I think the Mozilla site ( I use Firefox )

Right now it is running in the background DLing the Voting Machine video
Says it will DL any embedded audio or video from any web page

49. I agree YT is better than most ... but still hugely time-consuming.
I'm on a 112kbps (low-speed broadband) connection and it takes 'forever' to wait for those videos to load.

I agree with Skidmore - there are far, far too many postings that just don't merit the prolonged use of my limited bandwidth. Not even close. Personally, I regard such postings as inconsiderate of folks who are part of our DU community and, for one reason or another, aren't as 'blessed' (affluent?) as many.

Funny thing about affluence - we rarely regard ourselves as affluent when we are. It's as though the same advice is given when climbing the economic ladder as any ladder - "Don't Look Down!!" - especially since we're all acrophobic in the economic sense.

Wow, what the hell backwards part of the country are you in, Skidmore? Even in rural WV, most places have high-speed internet access. Now, in the deep mountains, maybe not, but even the smaller cities have both DSL and cable, hell, I lived in a town 15 miles from ANYTHING, population of about 60, and even there I could get DSL.

Oh, and by the way, no insult is intended by my remarks.

22. I hadn't considered that...
Point well taken. I apologize if I offended anyone.

In any case, it's been my experience that the cost of a dial-up connection + the cost of a phone line is roughly equal to a cable connection, in fact, sometimes the cable is actually cheaper.

Oh, and as far as poor goes, I make $6.00/hr. Fast internet is my one luxury. I don't even have a phone!

24. no offense, but if you don't like them, just ignore them.
YouTube is a very powerful and useful tool. You can't expect everyone else to stop using it because you don't like it. Many people have high speed connections and it works fine. youcan also download the file and watch it on your computer, which would work for you if you're willing to wait. But in the meantime I think you should just not click the youtube links if you don't like it, and let other people do what they like.

38. I agree 100% - youtube and other video are bad news...
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 10:08 PM by smalll
I've always been on dialup, and up until very recently, I have found it quite adaquate for internet use. Most of the net has been words with some pictures, for which dial-up is fine. With the growing youtubeification of the web, not just here at DU, I'm getting frustrated.

There's another techincal issue involved as well: computer speakers. I and others I know have found that computer speakers have a tendency to die easily. No big problem - until now.

The real reason youtubification is real bad news is this: people like to talk about our society losing its literacy. While there is truth in this, people have overlooked the happy fact that the internet as we have known it - DU being a great example, along with countless other messageboards, blogs, or even chatrooms - has been a new kind of flowering of literacy amongst people. So many unique, heart-felt, witty, deep-thinking, or simply elegant sentences and paragraphs have been written, read and enjoyed by all kinds of people over the years on the internet. Youtubification will kill this final flowering of literacy. All over the web, here at DU as well I suppose, more and more OPs will simply be video; not only video clips from elsewhere, but video and audio streams will be used as a matter of course for people to express themselves rather than the written word. Not too long after that, the majority of responses will be that way too.

We all like to joke about internet barbarisms -- all the OMG-this-is-hugh-I'm-series!!!!!!!1!1!!1 nonsense out there, the "creative" misspellings and ugly shorthand -- and yes, the internet public is not exactly a bunch of Shakespeares. But at least people are writing. Things aren't so bad. Wait until youtubification achieves web hegemony. Then we'll really be able to talk about cultural death.

39. Thank you! The least those youtubers could do is tell us dial-upers...
what is important about the youtube link they are pointing out. Then it can be our decision whether we click on it. More and more, all I see is something very cryptic and the link...nothing that tells us dial-upers what said link is about.

47. (Wow. ) "We"? "all"? "you"?
That's the mob rhetoric of bullies ... about as diametrically opposite what I'd regard as liberal and democratic as anything.

Beyond the use of such rhetoric, to engage in a 'strawman' fallacy is even more hostile. Nowhere did the poster ask others to "stop using YouTube."

How about a bit of empathy? How about realizing that MANY folks on DU aren't in a position, maybe geographically ore maybe economically, to pay for broadband.

Condescending garbage! :grr:
