..rumor has it. Before the news of that broke he was behind 6 points in the polls. With the news of the investigation, he may begin to trail even more. Jersey is a very blue state but that isn't helping us in the case of Menendez. He seems to be quite a burden. Can anybody explain to me again, why Corzine didn't appoint Codey to finish his term over Menendez? It wouldn't have been a question at that point.

Now, rumor has it, that the Democrats may try another Torricelli and try to replace Menendez with Codey on the ballot. If he isn't replaced, Democrats will be spending millions on this race that could otherwise go to potential pickups such as Missouri, Virginia and Tennessee.

Menendez says he regrets rental deal at center of controversy
The Associated Press
Published: Sunday, September 10, 2006
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Sen. Robert Menendez expressed regret Sunday over renting office space to a Hudson County nonprofit that receives federal funds, while his Republican challenger in the U.S. Senate race, Tom Kean Jr., distanced himself from the Bush administration on a range of issues.

In an interview with The Sunday Star-Ledger of Newark, Menendez defended the legality and ethicality of his role as landlord to the North Hudson Community Action Corp. But he acknowledged that, in hindsight, he would have been better off not renting to the agency while he was lobbying for it to receive federal aid.

"I did nothing for the North Hudson Community Action Corp. that was inappropriate or unethical," Menendez said. "But, having said that, if I ever thought even with an ethical approval that this would become the distraction it has become in this campaign, I certainly would have thought about it twice and would not have ultimately pursued it."

The U.S. Attorney's office is said to be looking into the deal, in which Menendez collected more than $300,000 in rent over 10 years before selling the Union City building in 2003 for $358,000 more than he paid for it.

Menendez said he sought and received verbal approval for the transaction from Mark Davis, an ethics lawyer with the House ethics committee, in 1994, when he was a U.S. congressman. However, an obituary for Davis in a Capitol Hill publication says he left the committee in 1993 and died last October.

3. Menendez is a damn good progressive candidate
He voted against IWR and the Patriot Act TWICE. Hopefully they can link Junior in with his Dad's connection to ABC's propaganda piece and remind folks that REPUBLICAN=BUSH, because in New Jersey Bush's name means shit

6. Kean has done his best to distance himself from Bush
You are quite correct that In NJ Bush is shit but Kean apparently called fro Rumsfeld's resignation and has made some strident condemnations of the admin's policy in the past coupolke of weeks.

Bad news is that he may win.

Good news is that Bush is such poison even GOP candidates are throwing stones.

4. Why is this happening NOW, 2 months before Election Day? Does Kean Sr
still have friends he can call upon to help his boy? Kean Sr's electoral ethics have been in the sewer for 25 years. He "won" the governorship by 2,000 votes in 1981 using STORMTROOPER tactics for minority vote suppression. See http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2115808
