Teacher Charged After Uproar Over Arabic (WAPO)...
This is what the Republican culture of fear and hate has brought us. I urge you to read the whole article, as this woman is clearly a real looney tune and it's a shame she was ever aloud to be around kids at all. By the way, Gaithersburg High School is located in a large suburb of Washington D.C., and the majority of it's students are minorities and children of immigrants.

A substitute teacher was charged with disorderly conduct Monday after she allegedly lashed out at a group of Gaithersburg high school students for using words in Arabic while practicing a commemorative speech to mark the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

-snip-

"Because of you our families died in New York!" she allegedly yelled, threatening to go to the principal's office to ask that Kulsum Malik, the teacher who was with the students, be told to leave, the charging document said.

4. That is one of the sad realities of our society...
people so often confuse xenophobia with patriotism. The vast majority of the people in this country have no idea what it means to be a patriot. I blame that on the shameless politicians who abuse the term for their own means, but it also has to do with poor civic education.

9. Patriotic?
I guess the McVey family (ironic sounding name, eh? Even if the spelling is different from the homegrown terrorist McVeigh's last name) was always born in the USA. Never in, oh, say, Ireland or Scotland.

Funny how it's only "patriotic" to call out brown-skinned people for their beliefs or practices.

:eyes: Freepers.

8. Unfortunately, now it's "in style."
I remember a time when that sort of behavior at say, a public gathering, would create a zone of avoidance around the perpetrator, as if even standing NEAR them would contaminate you with their poison.

Now, they get a cheer.

10. I couldn't resist putting a reply there myself...
Someone so full of hate and so obviously emotionally troubled should not be teaching our children. We've learned nothing about tolerance. We've been betrayed by our government by their constant use of the word "Muslim" as if all Muslims were terrorists. It sickens me that we have fallen so far back into the dark ages where people actually think this teacher and her hate are patriotic.

When you post a comment there, all your punctuation goes away... hmmm...

11. Am I the only one who noticed the similarity...
In the name:
<McVey, 49> Ok so it is spelled a little differently but I say if your name sounds like McVeigh than you are a terrorist.

Loved the part where she yelled at the Spanish teacher about talking in a different language. Ah yes, the dumbing down of America continues.

12. Ironically, she FLIPPED because they were saying "Peace be with you".
SNIP>
Montgomery County police say Carol J. McVey, 49,
began screaming at the group of Gaithersburg High School students
and one of their teachers for saying "assalamu alaikum"
-- a greeting that means peace be with you --
while they rehearsed the speech in a classroom.

Hopefully, this will be the END of her "teaching career".
I'm not happy that someone this nuts was allowed inside
a school in the first place.

"On her way out, McVey "yelled at a Hispanic teacher about the inappropriateness of speaking to students in languages other than English," police said."

Hey moron: does that include foreign language teachers in school? Just wondering...by that logic that would mean yes, in her book. Who's to say that hispanic teacher even KNEW Spanish? I know plenty of hispanics who DON'T know Spanish (but wish they did). The report said it was a HISPANIC teacher, not a SPANISH teacher.

Now I'm even MORE determined to improve my rusty Spanish and French.....:nuke:

Asshat....did she think everyone who died at WTC spoke only ENGLISH? Or are english-speaking only lives the only ones that matter? Has it occurred to her maybe Lebanese Christians know Arabic?

What an idiot.

I wish I could say I'm shocked, but I'm not. As far back as the 80s back when I was in college, I heard many a student complain about their 'foreign language requirement' for their degree plan, saying things like "we shouldn't have to learn a foreign language; other people should learn English." x(

17. She likely does think that learning Spanish in high school is some kind
of "invasion" by Mexico.

And there were victims from several countries on 911! Sometimes it seems they are truly forgotten.

22. There are estimates
that as many as 1000 undocumented workers perished in the WTC. So the death count is most likely close to 4000.
