NY Sun. PM West Wing Spoiler Thread: Avert your eyes.
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 09:10 PM by jazzjunkysue
That was gut wrenching. I swear. I have to tell myself it's just TV.

It's a quick version of Katrina. Anyone know if they wrote this before Katrina? Must have, right?

Reality follows art. CJ is so devestating.

1. I just saw it.
I thought it was art imitating life. Could they have written this before Katrina? If so, all I can say is that I'm stunned.

6. San Andrea nuclear reactor pipe burst. Right near San Diego.
They had to run an emergency pipe of coolant into the reactor, and just like the Sean Connery film The Widowmaker, they sent in 2 men to fix it by hand, and one died within a few hours.

It was gut wrenching to be there hearing it all happen as the pres does. Gut wrenching.

When the show closed

avert your eyes.....

They sort of had it under control, and it didn't look like it would result in a full scale explosion/melt down. Thank god.

16. I couldn't help but notice that, too. Instead of wanting to declare
martial law and take over, Bartlett gave the resources to the Gov. to use. When the Gov asked for military support, Bartlett didn't argue over who would be in charge, he just gave the order for support.

What a difference it makes when the Pres actually cares about the PEOPLE!

4. Speechless. Really. I adore these people. They can do it w/o Leo.
He wasn't on this one, but, it was a white knuckle flight. It felt like 2 episodes in one. Not much humor, but, everyone stepped up tp the plate.

And they told the public the truth, no matter how bad it got.

The evacuations were as bad as Katrina, but all of the communication was practically instant. We didn't know what was really going on in Katrina for a few days.

Amazing.

I was thinking, as CJ explained it to Bartlett for the first time, and he immediately started asking the action questions to get the gov. running in, that;

Even if you spent a month explaining the reactor leak and it's implications and solutions to B***, he still wouldn't understand, or know the first question to ask, or how to decide what to do, or who should do it.

7. I loved it.
My stomach was in knots the whole time.

They're awesome. Even without Sorkin, it's still one of the best shows on TV, IMHO.

8. Clearly this was written after Katrina.
Aide: The Gov of California isn't asking for Federal help yet, Mr. President.
Bartlett: Get him on the line, he is getting our help NOW, whether he wants it or not.

KAPOW ON SHRUB!

(Press Conference)
Bartlett: 32 minutes ago, a disaster happened...etc....

KAPOW #2 ON SHRUB! 32 MINUTE RESPONSE TIME YOU ASSMUNCH! BARTLETT > BUSH

to hint to the press that Vinick was involved in pushing the nuclear plant through.

No, No, No! Don't do it, Donna!

13. From a thread in GD Politics
I wondered about this myself:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2385091#2385111

(Trying to avoid spoilers for West Coast viewers but be forewarned)

Watching West Wing tonight, I couldn't help but notice certain contrasts between the rapid and effective handling of the situation by Pres. Sheen and his staff and his principled struggles with his conscience compared to the insensitive bungling of Bush to Katrina and its aftermath.

I wonder if it was just a coincidence or if the contrast was intentional."

14. Wasn't that the best?
It was how a President should react, not the callous, guitar strumming President we have, and the I have to eat tacos and kiss my wife head of FEMA because, boohoo, it's too much for me. Oh, "Brownie, you're doing a great job." Can you imagine what President Bartlett would have said to Brownie?

15. A REAL president would put himself near danger
Martin Sheen as Josiah Bartlett has it, GWB, not so much! GWB couldn't even be pried away from his vacation until they made a DVD for the idiot!

18. It was written and filmed after Katrina.
It would have probably been written very shortly after Katrina, while filmed a few months ago (around October or November).

19. Ouch! How to rub it in! Gee, George, this is how it should go, just
in case another disaster happens....

I just saw Sheen say a couple of words on Oddball, and he said it was a blessed, beautiful run. He looks like he likes it even more than we do.
