cable for NY but there isn't much suspense here, it's not a matter of who will win but what the final numbers will be.

14. With you here
I'm being delusional in my hopes Tasini gets 20%. If that were to happen with his bare bones campaign that would be meaningful. Hilary ducked him all the way. If Tasini had the same funding and open, televised debates were mandantory things would've been different. How different one can't say for sure. I'm of the opinion we should be voting issues rather than personalities. Put "Everybody gets healthcare" on the ballot and it breezes to victory.

22. Big race in MN CD5!
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 08:53 PM by goodhue
That's Minneapolis and some first ring suburbs. Sabo is retiring after 28 years. State Rep Keith Ellison is the progressive populist in the race who got the party and labor endorsement, but faces challenges from more well-heeled moderate dems in Mike Erlandson and Ember Reichgott Junge. Erlandson has Sabo's support and Ember has Emily's List money. Representaives Dennis Kucinich and Maxine Waters have been here in recent weeks to campaign for Keith. Keith's massive grassroots GOTV effort today hopefully made the difference in this race that has been described as too close to call. Fresh from door knocking, I'm off to the victory party at the Blue Nile.

50. Results still coming in in Rhode Island - Chafee 55% - 45% - 22% counted
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 09:17 PM by Grebrook
Lets hope Laffey pulls this one off and gives us a guaranteed seat. Whitehouse is leading Chafee to begin with, but wingnut Laffey will get obliterated Katherine Harris style.

56. Just got back from working the polls in Maryland
The funniest thing was a woman who came in demanding to have her affiliation changed. She said and I quote, "I don't want to be a stinkin' Republican anymore!" In my official duty as an election judge I couldn't crack up, but Lord knows that I wanted to start rolling on the floor right there. Overall, we had a pretty good day without many mishaps. We were getting word of widespread problems throughout Maryland of polling places that were opening late and having major problems with the equipment breaking down.

77. Massive problems with Diebold machines in Montgomery County
I thought I heard that results from MoCo won't be known for a week. The Diebold machines were set up but nobody passed out the controller cards so they were unusable all morning. People were given paper ballots and provisional ballots, but they ran out of those in several polling locations. Polling was extended one hour. Some precincts ran to Kinko's to make more copies, which may be illegal. Because of all the paper ballots, they may not be able to get an official count until next week in the largest (or second largest) jurisdiction in the state - and most progressive.

Note: The Diebold machine I voted on worked well -- but NO paper ballot.

80. Latest from Chris Bowers at mydd.com as of 10:44 Eastern
www.mydd.com

WI-08: It is looking like self-financing Kagen in WI-08. With 35% reporting, he leads Wall and Nubbaum 44%-33%-24%. Turnout seems to be about 20% higher on the Dem side thant he Republican side, but our primary was far more hotly contested. Again, we will have to wait and see what sort of race develops from this. I feel bad for Wall, who had raised a remarkable amount of money from the netroots (like $150K on Act Blue!). I hope the progressive community comes together out there.

MD-04: Wynn 56%, Edwards 40%. The margin is 1,400 with 21% reporting. About what I expected, even if not what I hoped for. Shoudl things continue on this path, I hope that Edwards is ready to run again in 2008, starting sometime in early 2007. IF she is, she will start with higher name ID, and can receive more focused and timely support from the progressive movement.

RI-Sen: I should mention that turnout in the Democratic Senate primary does appear to be about 28% higher than turnout in the Republican primary, even though there was basically nothing at stake. In other words, it is not as though we are doomed in this race because Chafee won. Whitehouse should beat Chafee and Laffey combined in total votes tonight. Whitehouse could still even walk to a huge victory if Laffey voters stay at home. We will have to see how things develop over the next couple of weeks.

MD-Sen: Mfume 40%, Cardin 39%, with 10% reporting. Expect wild swings like this all night since our still all-too segregated society will result in lots of landslide precincts for both candidates. Few precincts will be close. Also, turnout looks friggin' huge in Maryland. I have to think that this means Steele is finished. Too bad we can't say the same thing about Rhode Isalnd.

83. MD-Senate incoming returns are still volatile at this stage
11:03:50 Eastern Time

www.mydd.com

MD-Sen: Cardin 44%--Mfume 34%. So far, 18% of precincts have reported, and Cardin leads by 8,000 votes (like I said, turnout has been huge). The margin barely matters right now--what matters is where reports have come from. I don't know the answer to that. Also, could Maryland have easier ballot access laws? I could 18 Dems on the ballot.

89. And in the 11th District; Clarke (NY)
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 10:20 PM by cal04
In the only truly suspenseful race of the night, City Councilwoman Yvette Clarke, squeaked out a victory over three candidates in the 11th Congressional District in Brooklyn.

The daughter of the first Caribbean-born woman to serve in the City Council, Ms. Clarke defeated a white Councilman, David Yassky, who had shaken the city’s political establishment by running for a seat long held by black politicians and raising $1.3 million, more than all the other candidates combined.

Ms. Clarke also defeated two other black candidates: the incumbent’s son, Chris Owens and State Senator Carl Andrews, who had the backing of Eliot Spitzer and the Democratic Party leadership.
