OT: I need a web browser that can keep 20 tabs open and not hog memory
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 06:22 PM by liberaldemocrat7
I use Firefox browser and it used to use a reasonable amount of memory. Now Firefox 1.5 and other newer versions including Firefox 2 can eventually take up 800 megabytes to a gigabyte. This browser takes up alot of memory and probably has a memory leak.

Internet explorer 7 also eventually takes up about 500 megabytes after a number of hours use using about 20 tabs.

Opera Browser uses about 300 megabytes of memory which takes up the least memory but it has an added feature. Eventually opera will take up so much of the cpu it slows the entire machine around.

Avant Browser also takes up about 400 megabytes of memory as well.

I need a web browser that will handle 20 tabs and not take up so much memory and not take up cpu time as not to slow down the entire machine.

Yeah Netscape does this too as it appears a cousin of Firefox.

What browser have you used that does not take up very much memory nor uses so much cpu time?

THANK YOU.

6. No it does not appear improved. I also have Firefox 2
and it takes up alot of memory also. It can take up as much as 600 megabytes to a gigabyte with a memory leak.

2. Why in blazes do you need to keep 20 tabs open at once?
Just slow down! Are there REALLY 20 websites that demand your concurrent attention?

3. Curious, (I am not a techie), would the hypothetical best solution just
be a big fat chunk of RAM? I open ten or fifteen tabs at a shot but I don't stay on them for hours.
Also curious(if you dont mind sharing)... what sort of thing are you doing that you need all those windows open for so long?

10. I have Opera 9 and it takes up the CPU slowing everything down
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 06:35 PM by liberaldemocrat7
Opera has a problem consuming CPU cycles that it grinds the machine to a halt. I have to close Opera and the system comes back to a more normal function.

I have yet to find a multi tabbed browser that does not take up more than 400 megabytes and takes up so much cpu time that makes the machine useless after awhile.

21. Ok, I downloaded Opera 9.02 and so far it works ok.
I will see if it uses less cpu cycles than the older 9.0 version of Opera.

It only uses 350 megabytes of ram with 46 tabs open.

9. three options
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 06:25 PM by jasonc
1) MORE RAM and a faster computer to boot.

2) less tabs open, do you really need 20 tabs open at once?

3) buy a mac...

11. I have a machine with 1.5 gigabytes of RAM and a 3.0 gigahertz cpu
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 06:34 PM by liberaldemocrat7
I have a fast cpu and alot of memory 1.5 gigabytes. These browsers take up alot of memory and Opera 9 uses too much of the CPU. Avant also slows down the machine too as it goes into an unresponsive state after installing it about 4 days ago. I gave up on Avant.

I usually have several political bulletin boards open. I also have several other tabs open as well.

but I liked it better, I switched over to ie7rc1 and its ok but nothing to write home to mom about. could you point me toward a free ram monitor I could put in the task bar just to check. what all are you loading when you boot, go to msconfig and check on the startup tab, only thing I load is my antivirus software. AVG

plugins that address this issue?

14. No plugins that I saw take care of this memory leak.
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 06:39 PM by liberaldemocrat7
But this memory use does not limit itself to just Firefox. I have yet to see a browser that does not take up 400 megabytes of more.

18. You could always go back to Lynx :)
it's a text-based browser http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=lynx+browser&btnG=Google+Search
For discussion boards, it might actually work well.

There is a plug-in for firefox, when you close firefox it remembers what tabs were open, when you start firefox again it opens all those tabs. So you could close and restart firefox to clean up the leaked memory.

There are also some about:config options to limit memory use, they might lessen the memory leaks. You've probably already tried those.

20. Hehe Lynx. I used to use Lynx :) Memory programs do not work.
The memory program will not work because the browser has the memory and the memory program merely defragments these memory blocks and makes it contiguous. If a browser takesup 500 megabytes it will not relinquish any memory. I have used such memory programs. They do not owrk. I need to find a browser that doesn't take memory in the first place.

you have 4 gig of virtual memory per process (might be 2 gig, I been unemployed for a while and don't work with it like I used to), just increase the size of your swap file and deal with it...

17. 20 TABS OPEN
You might try Freememstandard 4.3(free) or FreememPro 5.x(pay)

http://www.meikel.com/en/products/freemem/

I work from home IT SUPPORT, requires remote control of multi-workstations. This is one memory mgr. that works.

I use both IE and Firefox during the same session. Freemem swaps out unused DLL disk to free up memory.

Good Luck

22. Ok, I'm using the Opera version someone gave the link and it works
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 11:55 PM by liberaldemocrat7
ok. I have used it for over an hour and it hasn't taken over the cpu and it uses 360 megabytes which appears tolerable and I have 46 tabs open.

I will continue to see if this works for me. I used opera 9.0 but this slightly later version may have fixed the excessive cpu use problem.

24. Try Flock
From http://www.flock.com. It's a streamlined browser based on the Mozilla code with some special features for bloggers. Aside from that, I don't know what to recommend for Windows. Linux has some super-low-impact browsers available, Epiphany being the most popular.
