1. It will probably come right after the mid term elections
by that time * will be steeped in impeachment hearings and a lame duck to boot. If his neocon controllers want to keep us in perpetual war they will have to reinstitute the draft then. Then in 2008 we will be rid of all the criminal bastards.

11. What on earth makes you think there will be impeachment hearings?
(Even *ASSUMING* we win a house or two...)

What prominent Democrats have called for these?

22. I agree
even if we manage to win even one house, I don't think we will start impeachment hearings. And, even if we do, its not enough.

We gotta get everyone Bush appointed out, they are all criminals and they are all illegitimate.

If we don't, we just end up with President Cheney, President Hastert, President Rice, etc...

29. Why they will not call for impeachment.
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 02:14 PM by longship
Because that would paint a target on their backs at which the Repukes would shoot arrow after arrow.

12. I worry that they have gotten so
much stirred up with too many countries & that it will catch up with us after we've taken back the house and senate -- then if a draft was to become necessary to deal with the crap they started, it would be blamed on the Dems at that point.... (overly paranoid, I know)

will not stoop, none.

23. Its true. I think that's what they are waiting for
they want Dems to be the ones calling for the draft, because they lack the moral courage to do so.

2. That's about right
You need an occupation Army size that's about 2% or more of the country's population.

17. which is exactly why
there will not be a draft. The people hoping for a draft to get the sheeple is the streets are wasting their time when they could be out organizing, or something. Not gonna happen, not in this reality.

Besides, as progressives and liberals, should we really be hoping for things to get worse? A draft is worse. I've been there, and I know.

26. I understand.
So why does it keep coming up? And always from the Left? Do people not think the American voter can tell which party is calling for a draft, and which is not?

And you can't say that Democratic politicians and activists are NOT calling for a draft. They are. As an example I give you Charlie Rangel. It may not hurt him in his district, but he's tarring other Democrats, IMO.

Oh, well, that's just my opinion. If it was worth anything, I'd charge for it.

5. If so, then here come the protesters en masse. I just hope all those
college-age kids aren't souped up on anti-depressants (if they don't need to be). Otherwise, they might like the idea of going to war.

13. Yes, it would result in campus riots. It isn't going to happen.
People are happy to let those who wish to enlist do so, but universal conscription would cause widespread civil unrest. It would be the campus unrest of the 60's all over again with one difference...the college-aged protesters would be joined by many millions of gray haired baby-boomers stepping back onto the same streets and malls they occupied from 1968-1972.

I'd love to see them TRY to start a draft. It would be the end of the Bush administration and its NeoCon push for empire.

6. The draft is wrong for so many reasons, but it is on the planning boards
Sending more troops into an area wracked by civil war/sectarian violence, will just put our troops in more danger. However, it is clear that we are running out of troops, calling up individual ready reserve and raising enlistment age to 42.

We cannot do much with the troops we have there now, but putting more in harm's way is not the answer. Plus adding non-technically trained draftees to this environment is an invitation to watching the dead and injured scoreboard spin out of control.

I should know, I was one of them. And I have admitted that I was wrong. There is no political support for the draft, and it will not happen.

I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist here, but I believe that this little rumor gets floated out every election in hopes of getting the youth to turn out and vote.

9. Prcisely What Gen. Shinseki And Other Experienced Officers Said
Rumsfeld needs to be replaced immediately - for his willful ignoring of those with experience, and his failure to change strategy in the face of obvious and profound failure.

(Didn't I hear that the Brave Sir Robin Congressional Democrats were going to make an issue of this? Yeah, right...)

We need to pull our troops out of Iraq to keep them prepared for situations in which they may really be needed.

What a $%^#ing catastrophe The Smirk has gotten us into.

25. If Democrats take the House and/or Senate
Bush will immediately push for conscription. He knows the draft is political poison and he will try to get them to take "the bait". The reason we haven't had a draft so far is because the Rethugs knew it would be sure death politically. I hope the Democrats have some back bone and tell him to take the draft and shove it where the sun don't shine.

27. Close, I think.
Throw a successful terrorist attack on US soil into the mix - all the flags come out again, middle-America howls for vengeance, and THEN * asks the Dem congress for a draft. Dems can't oppose it without being unpatriotic, and they can't support it without alienating their core constituency. Enough "moderates" will go along to pass the bill, while guaranteeing that the Dems will not be re-elected. * will get his war, and the Repugs will take '08.

As a side note, they could actually work to get a slim Dem majority via Diebold so they can pull this off.

Naw. That would take too much real tactical and strategic thinking, something I don't believe their little lizard brains are capable of.

31. No there will be no draft. The troops already
exist. And they have been trained, have all their unifroms and the government has their DNA, fingerprints, blood type, location, height, weight, eye color, hair color, SSN, DOB, address and phone numbers.

It's called the IRR and the order is labeled a RECALL...

We don't need more soldiers, just fewer wars.

33. 3? Dam, why keep the number low? Tell the truth generals!
You need about 8 times the number we have in Iraq! Not 3! 3 will just make it harder to leave when we finally admit defeat in Iraq.
