National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Announces Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Membership Monday, August 21, 2006


Partnership includes executive council appointment and program support

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) announced today a partnership with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing diversity among all of its associate, supplier and customer bases. This partnership will include executive representation on the NGLCC’s Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) and sponsorship of the organization’s 2006 events and initiatives.

As part of Wal-Mart’s involvement with NGLCC, Dee Breazeale, vice president of divisional merchandise, SAM’S CLUB Jewelry, will serve on the organization’s Corporate Advisory Council (CAC). The CAC is composed of NGLCC corporate partners whose mission is to discuss issues upon which members of the NGLCC and CAC work together to educate Corporate America and the public on the economic benefits of providing a diverse workplace and creating mutually beneficial relationships with the LGBT and LGBT-friendly business community.

In addition, Wal-Mart will assist the NGLCC in developing, expanding and promoting corporate diversity business development and procurement opportunities by sponsoring some of its programs including two of the organization’s conferences. Last month, NGLCC recognized the company as the newest corporate member of the Chamber at the NGLCC’s International Business and Leadership Conference in Montreal.

I still won't shop at Wal-Mart but at least they're doing something good

1. The way I see it they're just looking for more people to exploit.

The same way disney propagates lies but caters to the gay community. I agree it's still a good thing, but it's a double-edged sword. They can have my business again when they PAY their straight and gay employees a livable wage - among other things.

...how do you let them know you think they're doing something good?

This is the kind of behaviour I wouldn't want any business to refrain from.

And then let them know the reasons you still won't shop there. Wal-Mart just has too many problems for me. No spendy at Wally World for me.

6. I know the feeling, but another poster gave an excellent suggestion

Write Wal-Mart, let them know they did something good with this;however, you still won't shop there because of their substandard treatment of their employees.

What's interesting is the NGLCC partnership is actually causing outrage amongst the fundies. I first found this story on SNOPES and they verified it was true that there was an email chain going about with fundies protesting this action with Wal-Mart.

5. This brings up an interesting point: Can Wal-Mart reform?

We here know that they would still be an extrememly profitable business if they would pay their workers livible wages, let them unionize, give them better benefits, build enviromentally friendly stores on safe and sensible sites, and fix their lack of international labor standards...so would we begin shopping there? I'm three years Wal-Mart free and I hate their stores (feeling almost ill when I used to go in them), but I have to admit I would reward them if they took all those steps.

Maybe it is easy for me to say that since I doubt they will take all those steps.
