Why do you people think that the Redskin name is racist??

I could go on about racial epithets, many of you have said them.

For any of you who spew this, please make a donation to an American Indian tribe in the US, name your reservation,

RESERVATION, that is where most American Indians live, in poverty.

They have poor diets, diabetes, high blood pressure, because of the White Man Government handout of the government issued food, and WIC

Indians, by nature are not a sendentary people, BUT THE WHITE MAN IS SLOWLY KILLING THE REDMAN OFF FROM A POOR DIET AND POVERTY.

19. It is offensive and it is racist.
up until the early 20th century you could get a bounty if you turned in the scalp of an American Indian. These scalps were called "redskins".

Here's a sample proclamation

Proclamation issued in 1755

Given at the Council Chamber in Boston this third day of November 1755 in the twenty-ninth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Iceland, King Defender of the Faith.

By His Honour's command
J. Willard, Secry.
God Save the King

Whereas the tribe of Penobscot Indians have repeatedly in a perfidious manner acted contrary to their solemn submission unto his Majesty long since made and frequently renewed.

I have therefore, at the desire of the House of Representatives ... thought fit to issue this Proclamation and to declare the Penobscot Tribe of Indians to be enimies, rebels, and traitors to his Majesty. And I do hereby require his Majesty's subjects of the Province to embrace all opportunities of pursuing, captivating, killing, and destroy all and every one of the aforesaid Indians.

And wereas the General Court of this Province have voted that a bounty.... be granted and allowed to be paid out of the Province Treasury.... The premiums of bounty following viz:

For every scalp of a male Indian brought in as evidence of their being killed as aforesaid, forty pounds.

For every scalp of such female Indian or male Indian under the age of twelve years that shall be killed and brought in as evidence of their being killed as aforesaid, twenty pounds.

25. I say it is semantics. If I go to Chad, and say redskins, they don't think
that is bad. i say it depends on who you say it to. I really think it may have that connotation to some, but not to anyone I know. redskin is good. In my company, something to be proud of. Something I want to know more about. Something I admire.

32. I am American Indian
and I find it offensive. You can call it semantics but as the descendant of a Sand Creek Massacre survivor I disagree and find nothing noble in the term redskins. I also don't think that acceptability and appropriateness of words is something that is left to what your friends think.

43. Your point is well taken. I just wanted you to know that I admire the
people who treated this land as a home. That is the only connotation the word has for me. Heroes I wish I knew better. I never have any reason to use that term in a conversation. But if I hear it, that is what I think. Like "Eagles" or "Patriots". I didn't realize it was not acceptable to native americans. How do you feel about being termed "native american"? Your people were here before this place was branded America. Also, are you a part of a "so-called" sovereign nation? In that case, I'd think you would refer to yourself by your tribe's name. I really am not very educated about this. It isn't for lack of wanting. I took "Native American" history in college and my professor was senile and gave us the same lecture every other class (poor guy).

22. I really do need to leave this thread. But it's really so much fun.
To me, the term Redskin is a proud term. It represents (for me) strength and endurance. Vitality, integrity.

I have no doubt your observations have merit. But I personally don't know a soul who feels an indian name is anything but something to be admired and revered; an idea and a model to aspire to. I'm sorry you feel this is negative.

btw. my response is to the op..no matter where it ends up.

51. Polite question and a couple comments...

Why is this rant inspired by the naming of a football team? Seriously. You say up-thread you're sick of people saying it's a racist name. Okay. Does this mean you do not? Or does it mean that you do, or that you're ambivalent on the point and would rather people quite worrying so much about words at start doing something meaningful that actually aids Native peoples?

Comment: Most American Indians don't live on reservations. A lot do, and a great many of them lead nearly hopeless lives. Others who live on reservations perfer it, which would be fine, imo, if the Federal government would live up to its treaty obligations more completely.

Second comment: Do with this what you will. The Boston Braves changed their name to the Boston Redskins in honor of their coach, whose mother was Sioux.
