Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 11:54 PM by impeachdubya
plank in the Republican Platform makes it clear that they want 14th amendment rights for fertilized eggs; and most major "pro-life" organizations in this country feel that using the BC pill is tantamount to getting an abortion... they make no distinction.

Also, the legal decision the "pro-life" movement really has in its sights isn't Roe so much as Griswold.. obstensibly because of that pesky "right to privacy" they hate so much, but also because the secret fantasy is to go back to the days when people- particularly unmarried people- could be hauled off to jail for possessing or buying condoms.

Add to that the widespread support in the "pro-life" community for pharmacists who refuse to fill birth control prescriptions and dispense lectures on Jesus, instead; and the counter-intuitive fact that they work overtime against any contracpetive-based societal solutions (like the Putting Prevention First Act) which -duh!- would reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and by extension the number of abortions. Clearly abortion is one front in the war, legal contraception is the next one... all along with institution of "Biblical law" and bible-based punishments (like death by stoning) for "crimes" such as homosexuality, adultery, or "unchastity".

Yeah, it's fucked up to think that the Christian Reconstructionist kooks might be close to any level of power in society higher than dogcatcher... but unfortunately these are the folks who are setting the agenda at the highest levels of government. One need only look at the bullshit which has enveloped the FDA these past 6 years.

As for Patricia Heaton? Honestly, I don't know -or care- what that rightwing pinhead says her views on contraception versus surgical abortion are- by virtue of the fundamentalist whackjobs she's shilling for, the end of legal contraception, in a Totalitarian Christian Theocracy, is where she's trying to drag us all. It's worth noting that her organization, "Feminists for Life" has this to say:

http://www.feministsforlife.org/FAQ/index.htm#contraception

Some FFL members and supporters support the use of non-abortifacient contraception while others oppose contraception for a variety of reasons. FFL is concerned that certain forms of contraception have had adverse health effects on women.

Since the "pro-life" movement is in universal agreement that the pill is an abortifacent, clearly "FFL" is anti oral contraceptives. Apparently some of them are actually okay with people legally using "non-abortifacent contraception" (Zounds! Presumably only in the context of a Christ-centric marriage, I'm sure) but the overarching message is that contraception "concerns" them.

The bottom line? They don't give a shit about women, rights, babies or abortion, because the best way to reduce the number of abortions in this country is for there to be universal access to safe, effective birth control. What it's really about is telling other people how (not) to fuck, limiting their choices, and throwing women who want abortions in jail. As usual.

32. And why are these folks against contraception?
I understand if they are Catholics. The church made a stupid ruling in 1964 in regard to contraception and most Catholics in this country ignore them, but those who listen are quite vehement.

But how did the evangelical Protestants buy into this? Protestants have always been more reasonable about contraception, yes?

abortion, first off.

Secondly, (just like we know that pro-lifers make exceptions for themselves and their loved ones when they "need" an abortion, because, you know, that's different) I suspect there's an element of "do as I say, not as I do" to the whole thing. And the same kind of hypocrisy that allows Rush Limbaugh to demand long jail sentences for "druggies", heh heh.

I think your average fundy whackjob has moved well beyond anything resembling mainline protestantism. I don't think mainstream protestant churches are the ones demanding that a 6,000 year old Earth be taught in public school science classes. I think these folks have gone off what used to be the map with their beliefs and their agenda.

But point blank, if you ask leaders of the "pro-life" movement what their views on contraception are, they will either denounce them across the board or they will hem and haw and change the subject... what they won't do is take the sensible tack anyone truly interested in reducing abortion rates would do; namely, state that safe, legal and available contraception is the best way to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies in this country.

They wont- they can't- say that, because it cuts against the grain of everything they stand for: a wholesale jihad against all forms of non-procreative sex or sex for pleasure.

70. How did Protestants buy in? The alliance of Conservative activists...
...televangelists.

At first (60's and 70's) Protestant opposition to contaception came mostly part of a blanket opposition to feminism. (Being against contraception specificly was a Catholic thing, and thus suspect). But in the late 70s and early 80s, activists in Conservative movement politics identified evengelical and fundamentalist Christians as a prime "growth area", and set about wooing them into the larger movement, and also getting them to see some common ground with conservative Catholics on an assortment of "family issues". (In the most famous of these, Richard Vigurie and Paul Weyrich convinced Jerry Falwell to form the Moral Majority.) As they became more focused on abortion politics (an early frontrunner as a direct-mail fundraising hot-button issue), the association of contraception with unauthorized (a more accurate term than "illicit") sex strengthened.

But yes, Roe's a target, but what they really are after is Griswold. Conservatives hate "the right to privacy" about as much as they hate the New Deal, and are using the same tactics to get rid of it.

50. Hi Nikki--
I just went looking for the quotes and couldn't find it, damnit! I recall reading in a Heaton interview--she stated that she can be "difficult to work with." Her words.

I just found something interesting though, she has a development deal...guess which network it's with....? You got it...ABC. :eyes:

From wikipedia (though I found other sources citing that she has a development deal with ABC):

Heaton is known as an outspoken conservative, pro-life activist and is the honorary chairperson of Feminists for Life, an organization that opposes the practice of abortion. She is a Republican and supporter of both President George W. Bush and the U.S. military invasion and occupation of Iraq. In addition, she is an active supporter for the nonprofit world-hunger organization Heifer International. On her website she mentions giving Heifer International gifts to the cast and crew of Everybody Loves Raymond. Although she has been quoted as saying "once a Catholic, always a Catholic," Heaton now attends an evangelical Presbyterian church with her husband and their four sons. She has not left the Catholic church nor converted to Presbyterianism.

------------------------------------snip------------------------------------------------
Since 2003, Heaton has appeared in a series of television and radio commercials as spokesperson for the various incarnations of the grocery chain Supervalu, such as Acme Market and Albertsons. She has also appeared in advertisements for Pantene hair-care products. Heaton has a development deal and will have her own show on ABC.
------------------------------------snip------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll keep looking--maybe I'll find some interesting dirt. LOL! :hi:

59. Well, if she was the only outspoken repuke on the set...
it could cause a few problems. (Merely a personal hypothesis, btw). But if they all shared the same belief system, then maybe it was ok.

Maybe what she was refering to, in what I read previously was her desire to "get it right," on set, to work on scenes until she felt she had got them right, which can get on other actors nerves sometimes. When one actor is very demanding and everyone else is pretty laid back. But again, I can't say for sure, as I can't find any info.

:(

I know she looked pissed off during the Emmys--the year of Katrina. Ellen D. said something about everyone needing to show support for Louisiana and those ravaged by Katrina--the cameras panned to Patricia Heaton in the audience, and she looked angry and sullen with her arms folded across her chest while everyone else clapped. :eyes:

And really, I don't have a single problem with people who are sincerely opposed to abortion and I respect those who live by their beliefs. I just don't respect the way they think they have a right to expect others to live by their views, the way she seems to do.

And if I'm being honest... I would say it also pissed me off a little because moral superiority is possible a character trait I've tried to stamp out in myself as well. It's unattractive even if it's easy to fall prey to. So before I go off on Ms. Heaton some more, it takes one to know one.

Now, I see Heaton sucking up airtime on Entertainment Tonight as the spokesperson for this group Feminists for Life... which seems to be a code word for women who think they're feminists but fight for conservative patriarchal causes like the pro-life movement which is all about controlling women of course --very feminist of them! And their latest cause du jour is the Shiavo case.
--------------------------------------------snip------------------------------------------------------------------
...Listening to Heaton, a famous and wealthy star using a popular news program to denounce the character of someone she has never met, Mr. Schiavo, made me sick to my stomach last night --and she's doing it again tomorrow night. Same bat time. Same bat channel.

-------------------------------------------snip--------------------------------------------------------------Mr.
I use to dislike Patricia Heaton. Now I really despise her. Who died and made her God? I've never been the type to be this angry with celebrities who express political opinions because they're citizens just like you and I. Mel Gibson. Eminem. Streisand. Penn. Heston. Whatever. That's their perogative. But to use your platform to publicly demean the character of some civilian whom you disagree with? Who doesn't have an equal platform to defend himself (he's not famous. not glamourous. not wealthy. not a politician. etc...) Despicable. She oughta be ashamed of herself.

Tonight on the news channels she will be demonstrating her superiority again by claiming that she would never let her child starve. My guess is that Mr. Schiavo wouldn't let his child starve either. Most people wouldn't. But what if you WERE the brain-dead woman? What if you had expressed to the person closest to you (spouse) that you would never want to live like that? There's more than one way to look at this. Which is why people should just mind their own business rather than judging the marriage of people they've never met or even heard of till last week.

68. Thanks!
It is my favorite as well. No one has ever commented on it before.

(Also, my initials are CAR, my vote counts blue, and I own two blue cars.) So the name just seemed right!

66. Albertsons/Jewel Dumped Her As Their Spokesperson
An inside source said they couldn't wait to drop "bitchypoo" (our name of affection ya know) as they were getting lots of negative reaction from the commercials (that showed Jewel people falling all overthemselves to please the ever dingy Heaton). First, it was complaints...then it hit the bottom line...sales at Jewel stores were down while its competitor, Dominicks, was up. As soon as Raymond ran its course and her contract ran out, they dumped her.

I would have been surprised if she had NOT been in this piece of fantasy.

69. Patricia Heaton is a nobody. Truth is, I didn't even know who she was
until this this tread. Why give her publicity?
