KEITH NEEDS OUR OVERWHELMING SUPPORT *NOW*
DU'ers, what Keith did tonight was incredibly courageous. That means he's going to be the next neocon target. We need to stand behind him, and support him in every way possible.

Please, everyone, flood MSNBC with emails of support.

kolbermann@msnbc.com

If anyone has emails to the MSNBC news director, please post here. We need to make our support vocal and overwhelming.

Dear Keith:

In this through-the-looking-glass world where right is wrong and hate is Christian and suppression is freedom, it is encouraging to see some truth in the propaganda that has become our media news.
You are courageous and the epitome of Patriotic. Thank you for standing against the pressure.

Emmy

To Whom It May Concern,

Keith Olbermann's commentary tonight rang all too true, and if there was any justice in the world, it would be heard and, perhaps even, understood by G. W. Bush.

Kudos to Mr. Olbermann and to the network for airing, and for continuing to air, his relevant and well-articulated views.

Best regards,

39. here's the transcript. it's unfuckingbelievably powerful stuff.
This hole in the ground

Half a lifetime ago, I worked in this now-empty space. And for 40 days after the attacks, I worked here again, trying to make sense of what happened, and was yet to happen, as a reporter.

All the time, I knew that the very air I breathed contained the remains of thousands of people, including four of my friends, two in the planes and -- as I discovered from those "missing posters" seared still into my soul -- two more in the Towers.

And I knew too, that this was the pyre for hundreds of New York policemen and firemen, of whom my family can claim half a dozen or more, as our ancestors.

I belabor this to emphasize that, for me this was, and is, and always shall be, personal.

And anyone who claims that I and others like me are "soft,"or have "forgotten" the lessons of what happened here is at best a grasping, opportunistic, dilettante and at worst, an idiot whether he is a commentator, or a Vice President, or a President.

However, of all the things those of us who were here five years ago could have forecast -- of all the nightmares that unfolded before our eyes, and the others that unfolded only in our minds -- none of us could have predicted this.

Five years later this space is still empty.

Five years later there is no memorial to the dead.

Five years later there is no building rising to show with proud defiance that we would not have our America wrung from us, by cowards and criminals.

Five years later this country's wound is still open.

Five years later this country's mass grave is still unmarked.

Five years later this is still just a background for a photo-op.

It is beyond shameful.

At the dedication of the Gettysburg Memorial -- barely four months after the last soldier staggered from another Pennsylvania field -- Mr. Lincoln said, "we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract."

Lincoln used those words to immortalize their sacrifice.

Today our leaders could use those same words to rationalize their reprehensible inaction. "We cannot dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground." So we won't.

Instead they bicker and buck pass. They thwart private efforts, and jostle to claim credit for initiatives that go nowhere. They spend the money on irrelevant wars, and elaborate self-congratulations, and buying off columnists to write how good a job they're doing instead of doing any job at all.

Five years later, Mr. Bush, we are still fighting the terrorists on these streets. And look carefully, sir, on these 16 empty acres. The terrorists are clearly, still winning.

And, in a crime against every victim here and every patriotic sentiment you mouthed but did not enact, you have done nothing about it.

And there is something worse still than this vast gaping hole in this city, and in the fabric of our nation. There is its symbolism of the promise unfulfilled, the urgent oath, reduced to lazy execution.

The only positive on 9/11 and the days and weeks that so slowly and painfully followed it was the unanimous humanity, here, and throughout the country. The government, the President in particular, was given every possible measure of support.

Those who did not belong to his party -- tabled that.

Those who doubted the mechanics of his election -- ignored that.

Those who wondered of his qualifications -- forgot that.

History teaches us that nearly unanimous support of a government cannot be taken away from that government by its critics. It can only be squandered by those who use it not to heal a nation's wounds, but to take political advantage.

Terrorists did not come and steal our newly-regained sense of being American first, and political, fiftieth. Nor did the Democrats. Nor did the media. Nor did the people.

The President -- and those around him -- did that.

They promised bi-partisanship, and then showed that to them, "bi-partisanship" meant that their party would rule and the rest would have to follow, or be branded, with ever-escalating hysteria, as morally or intellectually confused, as appeasers, as those who, in the Vice President's words yesterday, "validate the strategy of the terrorists."

They promised protection, and then showed that to them "protection" meant going to war against a despot whose hand they had once shaken, a despot who we now learn from our own Senate Intelligence Committee, hated al-Qaida as much as we did.

The polite phrase for how so many of us were duped into supporting a war, on the false premise that it had 'something to do' with 9/11 is "lying by implication."

The impolite phrase is "impeachable offense."

Not once in now five years has this President ever offered to assume responsibility for the failures that led to this empty space, and to this, the current, curdled, version of our beloved country.

Still, there is a last snapping flame from a final candle of respect and fairness: even his most virulent critics have never suggested he alone bears the full brunt of the blame for 9/11.

Half the time, in fact, this President has been so gently treated, that he has seemed not even to be the man most responsible for anything in his own administration.

Yet what is happening this very night?

A mini-series, created, influenced -- possibly financed by -- the most radical and cold of domestic political Machiavellis, continues to be televised into our homes.

The documented truths of the last fifteen years are replaced by bald-faced lies; the talking points of the current regime parroted; the whole sorry story blurred, by spin, to make the party out of office seem vacillating and impotent, and the party in office, seem like the only option.

How dare you, Mr. President, after taking cynical advantage of the unanimity and love, and transmuting it into fraudulent war and needless death, after monstrously transforming it into fear and suspicion and turning that fear into the campaign slogan of three elections? How dare you -- or those around you -- ever "spin" 9/11?

Just as the terrorists have succeeded -- are still succeeding -- as long as there is no memorial and no construction here at Ground Zero.

So, too, have they succeeded, and are still succeeding as long as this government uses 9/11 as a wedge to pit Americans against Americans.

This is an odd point to cite a television program, especially one from March of 1960. But as Disney's continuing sell-out of the truth (and this country) suggests, even television programs can be powerful things.

And long ago, a series called "The Twilight Zone" broadcast a riveting episode entitled "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street."

In brief: a meteor sparks rumors of an invasion by extra-terrestrials disguised as humans. The electricity goes out. A neighbor pleads for calm. Suddenly his car -- and only his car -- starts. Someone suggests he must be the alien. Then another man's lights go on. As charges and suspicion and panic overtake the street, guns are inevitably produced. An "alien" is shot -- but he turns out to be just another neighbor, returning from going for help. The camera pulls back to a near-by hill, where two extra-terrestrials are seen manipulating a small device that can jam electricity. The veteran tells his novice that there's no need to actually attack, that you just turn off a few of the human machines and then, "they pick the most dangerous enemy they can find, and it's themselves."

And then, in perhaps his finest piece of writing, Rod Serling sums it up with words of remarkable prescience, given where we find ourselves tonight: "The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men.

"For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own -- for the children, and the children yet unborn."

When those who dissent are told time and time again -- as we will be, if not tonight by the President, then tomorrow by his portable public chorus -- that he is preserving our freedom, but that if we use any of it, we are somehow un-American...When we are scolded, that if we merely question, we have "forgotten the lessons of 9/11"... look into this empty space behind me and the bi-partisanship upon which this administration also did not build, and tell me:

Who has left this hole in the ground?

We have not forgotten, Mr. President.

You have.

May this country forgive you.

47. I sent this to all four emails (Abrams, Letters,Countdown, and Keith)
To Whom it May Concern:

I want to give kudos to MSNBC and to Keith Olbermann for the real journalism that makes up the larger part of Countdown. It is refreshing to hear and see something different, more incisive, and insightful than the prettified, parroted propagandistic dreck for which Fox News is known, and which is quickly taking over CNN, as well as some programs on MSNBC, unfortunately. I don't want a White House "public announcement." I want the news to question and to report FACTS. To investigate and to be skeptical. Anything else is just a White House "public announcement," and is an embarrassment to the network.

News networks that want to remain relevant and maintain their integrity ought to take a close look at Countdown. There are few journalists like Keith, and that's a shame to the profession and to the media as a whole.

Thank you!

50. My e-mail
I watched your commentary tonight and in the comfort of my home stood and applauded you! You have become a voice on TV that so many like minded people like my family have been hungry for.

Like many Americans, I stood united to support our government and the president following the attacks five years ago.

But as time went by, I saw that President Bush and his cronies were not about protecting America but protected their political future. I could go on and on, but you know this as well.

Thank you for standing up. Thank you for taking Bush's photo op of the 5th anniversary of September 11th and exposing it for the fraud that it is. This along with the disgusting piece of trash that ABC is shoveling in the face of this nation. A nation that has still yet to heal.

In a world of gas bags (Fox News and other blow hards like Rush Limbaugh) and gas hags (the vile creature known a 'Coulter') you stand tall. You stand tall with the likes of great news reporters like Edward R. Morrow and Walter Cronkite. This country needs more men like you.

Stay strong and keep up the good work.

With my deepest thanks and respect.

83. Dan Abrams Need Support, Too
Keith isn't a lone eagle here. Be assured Dan Abrams...who is right down the hall from Keith and oversees all that goes on in the Ft. Lee operation is either behind what Keith's doing or is even prodding him to do it. The Countdown ratings are the network's most solid right now and continues to grow...it appears Abrams not only likes Keith but is willing to let him expand the show.

Kudos to Dan Abrams for shitcanning Rita Cosby and throwing Tucker into la-la land where most of us don't see him. So far I like what he's done with the network.

Rita used to clear the room around here. It's unfortunate that she has a problem with her voice--but she might have overcome it if she'd chosen to do some real news. She certainly wasn't worthy of the show that preceded hers.

However, they, too, are an eye opener in terms of the conditions in jail and the fact there's no longer any pretense of "rehabilitation" unless it's a very unusual jail program.

Here's my note:

Subject: Thanks, Keith

That was awesome. After watching a bit of that ridiculous piece of crap on ABC - specifically, the part where they made it seem like Bush was not only present but in charge on 9/11 - it was wonderful to turn to your program and hear your eloquent, moving, and beautifully timed commentary.

It struck me while watching that horrid miniseries, thinking about the people who will believe it, how dangerously low Bush has set the bar. His act is so bad, it's frightening to comtemplate what might follow it.

Just last night, as it happens, I rented and watched Good Night and Good Luck. I was born in 1960, so I don't remember ever seeing Edward R. Murrow on TV and until last night didn't know much about Joe McCarthy or what happened during that time. After watching tonight's Countdown, I can't help thinking maybe it's a turning point.

If not, thanks for the inspiration.

94. The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street!
I am as blown away as everyone else. When I finally tuned back in to DU after football to see what had gummed up the works here earlier and found out about the KO editorial, then read it in this thread, I was stunned ... happily, wonderfully stunned. Will view it later, but often I get more from reading a transcribed version in black and white words on -- well, screen, usedtabe paper.

Before I offer my two cents about the Monsters, I want to say that I do believe tonight's eloquent and very hardhitting editorial by Keith Olbermann should and likely will go down in modern history as not only courageous as hell but a brilliant, timely, heartfelt, and honest rendering of the truth in a big way, as in capital "T" Truth.

I actually do think that over the next few months and maybe next few years, this speech of KO's will be quoted so many times by people who believe it and endorse it and are grateful to have it to express themselves and their feelings with it, that there's no way it could NOT become a cornerstone of journalistic integrity.

Everyone else who thinks he or she is an "A-anchor" or respected veteran journalist on the teevee must now be compared to the quality, integrity and courage Olbermann has shown he has in abundance. I love it so much that he called out his own fellow news types every bit as much as he did the criminal pols in power, and made it pretty clear they were now on notice too!

About the Monsters in the Twilight Zone episode Keith referenced from back in the early and very special Rod Serling days ... well, that's a favorite era of mine, still near and dear to my heart for just the reasons that Keith cited this example. Sci fi and fantasy have long been known to be excellent vehicles for thinkers to project the possibilities so the rest of us can see where we might end up if we continue in some trends or ways we're caught up in now.

I especially love and remember to the tiniest details that episode Keith summarized -- and it was so very appropo this context! Turn the people against their own kind -- that is precisely what the Criminal-in-Chief and his fellow conspirators did to conquer us all, while most or at least a great many Americans never knew what had hit them. The cynical bastards literally took advantage of our grief and confusion to put their longlaid plans into play -- just as they'd probably hoped they could after that shock to our core.

I so well remember, truly like it was yesterday, not only the intense shock and grief I felt as I watched the events of Tuesday, 9-11-01 unfold before my eyes, but also the very sudden development of a powerful, almost cosmic, sense of unity among Americans that day. I loved NYC for the first time in my life. LOVED IT AND ITS PEOPLE. Took them into my heart and wept for them as I had for my lost daughter many years before.

My father had been an abusive and terrible career state trooper and I had been wronged by other cops in my life so I fairly well loathed most people in law enforcement up until that day -- but suddenly as they died in large numbers while trying to protect us, I remembered why it was I once used to admire, respect, and TRUST them. In a hundred ways in just that one day, I along with most citizens in this once-great nation leaped high above the petty fray of greed and crappy political plotting and powermongering to grab and hold tightly to me the prospect of a new and powerful unity among my brothers and sisters in the United States of America.

I believed without a doubt then that we could not only defeat the terrorists which had so cruelly attacked us but that together we could ALL rise above the infighting bullshit and bring America back to where she'd once been -- on the high road, the right path. With so much support from around the world, even in places and among people who had not been liking us much in recent times, there was just NO WAY we could squander this tragic opportunity to put right in our country what had been going wrong with it. I felt that in so doing, we might just regain the luster our nation had lost around the world and help other countries lift themselves up a few notches as well.

I think that as most people in the coming days read and reread, view and view again what a brave newsman named Keith Olbermann did and said tonight, they will also remember like it was yesterday the similar feelings they had on September 11th five years ago -- because he reminds us of this nearly forgotten but vitally important reality of that otherwise horrible day. And if that happens, I don't think any response the bad guys can offer to Keith's outright challenge will stand a chance of gaining ground in the hearts of real folks.

And just imagine what the response around the world might be as those who have about given up on America altogether read and hear about KO's editorial! They may realize that there ARE still people here who can see through the lies and deceptions, the tricks and manipulations of our government and compliant media -- and who are willing to speak out against them in no uncertain terms to anyone who will listen. If they then witness a strong swell of support among Americans for the man who stood up and spoke truth to power here on such an important day as today, then perhaps, just perhaps, the rest of the world will give us a chance to fix what's gone wrong with our country and then make up for how we carried our wrongs to them.

This speech by our man Keith has done -- and I believe will do -- a lot more than just give us here at DU hope, joy, and renewed confidence. I believe it holds the potential to bring real change to the political landscape in this country and to lead the charge to really and bygod certainly dump the criminals from their contemptuously comfortable seats on the OUR furniture in the White House for good and all.

I was one of many Americans who caught on TV the second airliner's striking the second tower live as it happened five years ago today.

Now I find myself thinking that the gut impact of shock and horror I felt when I saw that happen right before my eyes could be echoed now by how some men who've had great power and abused it for their own gain for the last five years must feel when they first see or hear Keith's speech. Surely it will be like a mulekick in the gut to them!

And just like we all felt that day, they will possibly be struck just as forlornly with the sudden understanding that there's not a damn thing they can do about what's already happened to them just now....

I'm going to sleep on that thought tonight, and sleep well I surely shall!

Apparently Bush has not done anything for the Gulf States either or the Katrina survivors, or for those soldiers who are in Iraq and Iraqi Civilians, Bush is just a evil shameful man.

108. Done! With great pleasure I sent the following:
Olbermann's 9-11 commentary - echoes of Edward R. Murrow

I am old enough to remember the last time an ideologically crazed group of self serving pseudo-patriots intimidated our citizens with charges of being unpatriotic and conducted a witch hunt that threatened the free speech of all of us. I still remember the courageous voice of Edward R. Murrow challenging the ideologues and restoring sanity to the public discourse. Keith Olbermann has demonstrated that same type of courage in his most recent commentary on 9-11. His moral outrage against the politicizing of 9-11 and the memories of the victims he personally knew rings true, unlike the tired appeals to 9-11 of the current administration.
In this current era of media cowardice, Olbermann stands as the voice of truth and reason. I wholeheartedly applaud his efforts and the courage of his company and sponsors in their unwavering support!
Edward R. Murrow must be beaming with pride. I know that I am.

I teach rhetoric and argumentation at Tulane University. We have studied Rumsfeld's speech to the American Legion and your brilliant response. That was a model of excellence, not only for its content, but for its structure and rhetorical power. But I can't keep up with you. First that, then the Bush comment and now the 9/11 comment.

There should be a class just studying your "Special Comments." Special indeed.

I hope MSNBC recognizes that you have become the voice, nay, the conscience of America and continues to support you.

Well done, sir, well done!

111. my email
subject: LOVE you and your commentary

Well, I love your commentary MORE. No offense.

Damn, you speak for me, Sir, and MILLIONS who have been in a state of terror for the past 5 1/2 years--- terror at the brutality, stupidity and fascist mentality of Bush and his Administration.

I do believe history will see these as dark, dark days, and non-partisan historians will record the breathtaking arrogance and mismanagement that befell this country in the Bush Era. However YOU are the only "mainstream" journalist TALKING about it, CALLING them on it... you, Sir, ARE the Edward R. Murrow of our time.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep TAWK'in. Please, please please, you are needed as much on our arrid journalistic landscape as is something to fill the emptiness at Ground Zero. I mean it- "our side" is losing steadily, as powerfu, lunatic-fringe fundamentalists and rightwing extremists can make a 40-million dollar movie designed to keep governemnt in the hands of one political party, and get it AIRED on a major television network, ABC. We are losing when Rush LimpBalls is invited to make a "commentary" on CBS Nightly News. We are losing when vast numbers of Americans still believe the so-called "war on terror" is being fought in the chaos of our own creation, Iraq.

Please, you are my newest, latest, shiniest hero of Free Speech. Thank you from the bottom of my broken heart.

I'm watching ya,

I would like to send a note of support to Keith Olbermann for his presentation of last night, 9/11/06. Mr. Olbermann’s statements took great courage and conviction, two qualities seemingly lacking in the news media these days. He speaks truth to power, and we need that now more than ever.

123. heres is my email - titled Gracias for your courage
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 01:10 PM by judaspriestess
I flew to NYC in October of 2001 to pay my respects to the fallen heroes and
citizens of 9/11. I was so moved looking at the missing persons posters
everywhere. So sad. But you know, NYC kept going, we had a great time while
we where there and it proved what a great country we live in and we were united
in the pain of it all.
Now our country is being used like a cheap whore by the swine in office and
his disgusting cronies. Its unbearable to see and hear what they are doing to
this country, to the world. Mexico for god's sake had hundreds of thousands of
people protest in the streets for their version of the 2000 elections and the
atrocities of the outcome. I am saddened that we Americans don't do the same.
Instead we keep paying these ridiculous gas prices, while jobs keep getting
outsourced, (sorry ,I am not blaming the immigrants, although its an issue that
must be addressed) folks losing their homes at a record pace, lack of
healthcare, the IRS terrorizing people because *ush wants to collect back taxes
to fund the war and the IRS is now sending people to prison. These are just a few
examples. Prison? I hope these folks are not being tortured to turn over their
debit card.
Freedom of Speech is gone as we know it. You on the other hand, have done a
magnificent job excercising our precious right on a daily basis. I thank you
from the bottom of my heart.
To answer your question, NO I will never forgive that poor excuse of a human
being for what he has done to our great country. He can go to hell!!
Thank you once again.

124. My email
Mr. Olbermann;
I have never seen your program before till last night. Your commentary struck a cord with me, one that I will soon not forget. I have passed it along to friends and family so they too could hear your words. For far to long the Bush administration has gotten away with scapegoating and scare tactics meant to frighten us into submission, but no longer. This administration will not be remembered kindly by history and with good reason. Until I saw your program I assumed many journalists have been beaten into submission so to speak by the Republican party and their minions, it's refreshing to see some one who is not afraid to speak the truth nor their mind when so many are afraid to be branded a traitor or appeaser. Thank you Mr. Olbermann. Thank you for speaking the words that very few utter any more, but most of all thank you for giving us hope. Hope that sanity and reason will take back our halls of government once more. I look forward to seeing your program again. Once again; Thank you!

Sincerely;
James

Mr. Olbermann:

I would like to express my gratitude to you for your commentary on 9/11. It is an unfortunate fact that very few television news people are willing to speak the truth about what is happening to our beloved country. It is also true that few have the courage to expose our so called leaders for the morally bankrupt inept buffoons that they are. You are a national treasure. You give me hope that it's not too late to save this country. For your willingness to speak truth to power I congratulate you, may MSNBC have to wisdom to keep you on the air.

I hope that all of our support and encouragement gives him some hope. I know he will be roasted by the freepers and dittoheads. Well, I'm sure at least some of the crap he'll receive will be good for a laugh. Those freepers can get pretty creative with their hate mail. Just ask Ava Lowery. Oh wait, that was just despicable and cowardly.
God, what sick, depraved bastards.
In any case, go Keith! Keep fighting for justice!
