Ted Koppel on Discovery Channel last night
Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 12:18 PM by JohnnyRingo
In what appears to be a new series, Ted Koppel led a town hall discussion about the impact of heightened security on our freedom and the trade off that has ensued since 2001.

Besides the panel that included many credible (or not) experts like Gorelic, Ridge, Roemer, Wilkinson, and 9/11 families, there were taped interviews with other high profile figures such as Rice, Tenet, and Kean.

It was notable that Koppel used an agressive interview technique that hasn't been seen since the last century. He refused to accept the obsurd talking points that pass for answers these days on so called "news shows".

It was interesting to hear Tom Ridge (perhaps explaining his departure from the administration) pointing out that "he's heard too many people tell him that 'I've got nothing to hide, so I don't mind' and that the current battle against terror should not require a rewrite of the Constitution,"

At the end Koppel wrapped it up by saying that "he knew of only one country that has no worries of terror." "One country that is absolutly safe from attack by foreign terrorists." "That country is North Korea." He implored the audience to "think about that".

It appears this show is now a series on Discovery Channel, and I'll be watching.

1. Taped it...
Think the current series is three shows; he is on Discovery's
staff, will be doing future topics. He's good, miss the ol' "Nightline."

2. I'm glad that he left Nightline
That show was a dead end.

This new show has serious potential. It was very effective at making the BushCo representatives look like the idiots they are. It's a real debate show, not seen on cable since the early days of CNN.

It's crazy how all the real news shows are leaving cable news networks for greener pastures like Discovery and Comedy Central. Discovery is Turner owned, correct?

3. Good for Koppel...
He and I have had our differences over the years.

But, maybe he's after the Truth afterall.

5. I caught parts of it.
In what I saw he was cordial but pressed many for better answers. The show has potential.

6. Lot's of folks last night
complained about the show. They wanted Koppel to be a lot tougher with fewer neocon and more progressive viewpoints. I guess it would have been more fun that way for us, but the show was actually fairly well balanced and gave both sides of the argument. It was a balanced approach we aren't used to seeing much any more. I thought Koppel did a good job.
