1. I play that in my car a lot.
I now have 3 of their albums.
The only other country albums I have are by Willie Nelson.

2. As far as I'm aware,
from an interview on the BBC2 radio here in the UK, that song is about her attitude to one of her ex-boyfriends trying to patch things up with her. What's it's significance here - you lost a boyfriend ?

3. Wrong!!

It has nothing to do with an X.
It has everything to do with the hateful way they were treated.

4. I hope you were joking or being sarcastic
If not, you need to keep up with current events and the repercussions of the ignorant people.

8. Partial error
it was a close friend of their's from the country community who gave the original background to that song. Happened on the Bob Harris show a few months back. Use this link and check with him if you like : http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/bobharriscountry/

I can quite understand the words being open to another interpretation. Exactly the same happened with a whole lot of Bob Dylan's songs which were not meant to be protest songs. Watch "No Direction Home" to see what's he's got to say about his songs.

5. As far as I'm aware, I pretty damn happy I don't depend on BBC2 radio
to get my news, if that's the sorta shit you're hearing.

7. I don't know what you heard on the interview, but
I've heard several Dixie Chicks interviews. This song is their response to all the hatred spewed at them after their statement against *. I'm pretty curious what you heard. It's one of my favorite protest songs. When I get really angry, it's what I play.

That way you'll get an honest answer.

10. Rather weird lyrics for a break-up song...
I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

11. It's not a breakup song.
Thanks for posting the lyrics; if that's not enough to convince everyone, they should take a look at the video. That leaves ZERO question what the song is about.

12. I also just googled the title of the song + about Bush and found
several interviews that talk aobout why the Chicks wrote the song and made the video. I could post them if you want, but figured the lyrics were enough.

13. I didn't say a break up song
I said it was her reaction to an ex wanting to get back together with her and her reaction to that. As I said in another reply - simplest thing to do is email them and ask to what the words originally refered. If I'm wrong then I apologise.

Nothing is going to change the fact that having moved away from American Old Time Music , then alienated the Country crowd and now not necessarily being good enough for the Country Rock crowd it looks as though their main income will be from those who expect similar songs in the future.

I'm also assuming that all those who think they are so good have now also bought every single of of their earlier CDs and will also buy all future releases. That's what I'd do to support any band or group I thought was good - done so on many occasions and my children do the same for bands they like.

<snip>

Their new CD, called "Taking the Long Way" chronicles all the things that have happened to them, but if you were expecting something just soft and maternal, guess again. One song in particular, a single released six weeks ago, sums up their current state of mind. It’s called "Not Ready to Make Nice."

The song is powerful and unrepentant. The anger isn’t directed at the war or the president — or at their many fans who deserted them. It’s about the hatred, and narrow-minded intolerance they encountered for expressing an opinion.

As artists, they wanted to respond with music and a video to drive home the point.

"It was hard to write it because it was … we each felt the same way," says Maquire. "But it, we didn't want to make too much light of it. We didn't want to it to be too preachy, or too heavier than it was. And after we wrote this song, we felt like it was exactly how we felt."

<snip>

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As for purchasing their CD's I own three of them including the current one. I purchased the last two specifically to show my support for them (although I received the added benefit of enjoying the music).

16. You want it straight from their mouths? Here ya go.
"Those who think they are so good?" Good lord, what is your problem? As a matter of fact I DO own every Dixie Chicks CD. I supported them long before they began speaking out against the illegal war, and will continue to support them.

And yeah, the song is about the critics who attacked them for speaking out. From the recent 60 Minutes interview:

how about being TOO GOOD for them. Most country music is simplistic crap.

26. I'm wondering if that poster has ever listened to their music.
They're incredibly talented women (both instrumentally and vocally), and their music bears more resemblance to country's roots than almost any of their peers. The Chix put out truly quality music. There's country radio, and then there's REAL country, like the Chix, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Allison Kraus, and so on.

32. Oh ha ha
Trolling my foot.

Your other post conveys they're better than the Eagles - one of the original country rock bands and still playing. That's quite apart from Neil Young - should I keep going ?

You're not allowing for the fact I just love really good music and have a huge collection.

29. Actually the Chicks started out WAY country (I mean all gingham
and frills) and they slowly evolved (with member changes and musical tastes). I think I saw some kind of documentary on them. Anyway - I don't know what catagory you'd put them in if not country now.

21. Did you read those lyrics?
That is a direct reference to the death threats they got after Natalie said she was ashamed that chimpy came from Texas too.

If you don't think that there was a concerted effort to discredit and scare them off after she said that, then you aren't living in the same country that I am.

And yes, I have all of their CDs and I will buy all future releases.

14. Why?
I haven't posted a theory contrary to what most DUers have heard in interviews. Please post some backup to your statement that the song is about an ex. If I see some statements from them contrary to what I've heard, then I will email them.

19. Have you been hiding under a rock? They've given several interviews
and it's been stated by them over and over again that it was very much a reaction to how they were villified and bullied by the right.
