Why is there still a hole in the ground?
Don't flame me and don't lock the thread. This is not a "flame bait."

We were told that we need to go on, that we need to resume our regular life, otherwise "the terrorists won." When we fall from our bikes, we know that we are supposed to jump back on them.

Ground Zero is not a grave site. All human remains were carefully removed. Indeed, as long as this remains "a hole" it is like a festering wound that refuses to heal. There may be grieving members of families that come there to mourn, that will not go on with their lives. I cannot comment on this. Each faces a loss differently and I have not been there, cannot put myself in their place.

But we can have a memorial site, large enough to accommodate people's prayers, or meditation, or remembering. And, perhaps, having another world trade center in that site, where people are busy, will remind the families of the lives of their loved ones.

Again, I do not know anything about grief, about healing, perhaps some here do. But I think that for us, as a nation, we need to rebuild it, soon.

Plus, as long as the hole is there, it can provide political fodder for the ones who use terrorism as their message.

1. I believe
ground has been "broken" for the rebuilding, but it is a huge job. I've been to the site every year since it happened and each year there has been a lot of tprogress. I think we'll see it move pretty quickly now. That is a valuable piece of property and investment trumps all in this world.

2. Here's today's story
It's a real estate issue.

I googled and found this:

Progress slow in rebuilding ground zero

By Liz Anderson
The (Westchester, N.Y.) Journal News
NEW YORK -- Politicians, developers and designers all have poured their dreams for rebuilding lower Manhattan into ground zero, but five years later, the gaping chasm left behind remains largely just that.

The redevelopment of the 16-acre World Trade Center site has been beset by political jockeying, 11th-hour negotiations and redesigns of both the signature tower and the victims memorial, the former to address security concerns and the latter to cut a price tag that had soared to a jaw-dropping $1 billion.
Gov. George Pataki once set a schedule that called for topping off the landmark Freedom Tower this year. Instead, the cornerstone laid at a July 2004 ceremony was quietly trucked off in June and put in storage.

6. It would be something if he were running it
Reporter: Mr. Mayor why hasn't your big plan for "insert bid idea" gone through?

Nagin: What? Hey, that was 14 big plans ago. Ask me about one of the big plans I remember announcing.

Reporter: When is something going to get done?

Nagin: Get done? huh?

4. The whole thing is a joke
Although Nagin ticks me off a whole lot, he rightly pointed out that we've done NOTHING to that hole in the ground. I think it's sick. How many design iterations do we need to see? That hole remains there so we can have a nice 5th anniversary 9/11 media show. They should just build a park at this rate.

5. You sort of summed it up...
...with "as long as the hole is there, it can provide political fodder for the ones who use terrorism as their message."

Once the towers are rebuilt, the city and antion will finally feel as if they can move on - no towers, no moving on.

Anyway imo - it's a crime to let that sort of land go un-used in NYC. With space at such a premium there you'd think they'd really want to get SOMETHING in place.

7. Yes, and no background for news crews and for politicians
When the 10th anniversary will be commemorated, something will be there. But at least Bush, Pataki, Bloomberg and Giuliani, will have their photos for their scrap books.

And the evening programs are now starting.
