If the Fundies want to "Rapture" and go to "Heaven" so bad
Why don't they just help Jesus and go the natural way?

1. Suicide = bad. Killing the rest of us = good
I've long ago given up trying to understand these dangerous fools. I just want them to stay away from sharp objects and governments, things they could use to harm the rest of us.

Because they will.

4. Better yet, why don't they go fight in Iraq?
After all, didn't Jesus say that everyone who dies in a holy cause gets 47 virgins?

Of course, the second the person touches one of those virgins inappropriately, they go to Hell.

Still, it's the principle of fighting for their holy cause, not just providing lip service and checks about it.

6. Huh, what?
"47 Virgins?" I'll have to look into that one...

Slightly OT, but now have a "personal" grief with someone who you might call a fundie...

A relative is having a rough time of things and IMO (and the DOCTOR'S as well since she wrote the script!) needs an antidepressant. But her mom has her brainwashed that antidepressants are "baaaaad" and ALL she needs is to pray more...

Look, I believe in God and Jesus and prayer, but I ALSO believe in helping yourself via medicine!

When I had to turn to antidepressants and therapy to help me, I NEVER felt like a failure as a Christian or a PERSON. I just accepted that my psyche had reached the breaking point and I needed help to cope.

If the "Scientologists" rightfully get labeled as FRUITCAKES for their stance against antidepressants....why not the "Fundies?"

8. My sympathies. Have you tried screaming at her mother?
Personally, I've suffered through a bit more than my share of problems, including PTSD. But I have never found any psychiatrist or any drugs to be of any use in helping me through it. I would never deny anyone the opportunity of taking those avenues; any way to health that works is a good way.

If I knew this woman who forbid her daughter from seeking help, I would get in her face about it, and tell her that she cared more for arbitrary rules and philosophy than for her living, breathing, hurting daughter. And if the daughter came to some bad end...if she attempted or succeeded at suicide, or hurt herself physically...I'd probably punch the woman out.

11. Sorry, I can't condone murder in this case.
And not because I have anything against murder in absolute terms or anything like that. It's that murder would be so convenient. It also bases an assumption that the woman has a soul, that there is an afterlife, and that God wouldn't like her putting her child through tortures. Those are some pretty big assumptions, and they could be incorrect.

And even if all of them are true, that judgment would only feel good if WE get to the afterlife, wound up in heaven, and found out about it. Those are three more non-absolute assumptions.

I don't know who said it, but I believe that vengeance is too good to leave to the Lord. I want this miserable mother to feel the pain of her presumptions in THIS life, where I can see her cry and realize that she had contributed to the early death of her daughter.

13. No, you misunderstood, let our Fundies fight their Fundies
hand to hand combat in the middle of Iraq. Our fat, ignorant, bible thumpers against their exploding gnomes. let's see who gets to heaven first.

14. Sounds like Mom has control issues
She may be less worried about her daughter's soul and more worried about her daughter getting better, and thus less dependent. I'm basing this on my previous experience with 12 step programs. There were some megalomaniacal sponsors, medically untrained of course, who would advise sponsees not to take meds because it would break your 'sobriety' and you should just trust things to your Higher Power. Scary shit.

Oh yeah, and fuck Tom Cruise too. Sorry, just had to put that out there.

7. Because they are COWARDS. The same reason that there are...
no "Christian" suicide bombers.
Apparently, those "Mooslem ragheads" actually believe in their promised paradise more sincerely than our homegrown lunatics do

16. That's what we need!
More christian suicide bombers on the streets of L.A., N.O. Sf. and small towns across america! That would show some religious balance!:sarcasm:

I do not think christians in this country believe in Mohammad's paradise!

17. That is not my point...
Christians certainly believe in their own mythical paradise, don't they?
However, christian fanatics appear to prefer to visit death and destruction on others with no risk to themselves (unlike Islamic fanatics)
I honestly believe that Christian fanatics who long for the ridiculous rapture have a suicidal impulse, but they want their magic skygod to do the "dirty work" for them. And, of course, take all of the rest of us with them. Hence, my label of "cowards" They leave it "in god's hands", but the impulse is still there.

10. It can't be achieved through self-sacrifice
It can only be achieved through the annihilation of brown people, after which Gawd will reward them with a mass trip to Heaven and wrathy vengeance upon their enemies (like us, for example).

12. Apparently, it's a sin or some such crap.
It's unfortunate really. So instead of killing themselves and risking hell, they feel the need to live out their natural lifespan and put the rest of the world through hell in the meantime. Bastards...
