Dear George,

I am filmmaker, friends with Monty who has forwarded me some of your
emails. , We were thinking about filming in Oaxaca, while I was
travelling in Mexico but decided to stay in the Mexico City area and
continue working on the Planton. I assumed there was already lots of
indy media in Oaxaca already working there. I am returning to Mexico
City Sept. 13 to 17 to film during the first CND (la convención
nacional democrática). I have some questions : Do you know are there
any Oaxaquenos going to be in the DF for the CND? Are they sending
representatives? It would be very good to hook up and do some
interviews, and film APPO if they are at the Planton or the Zocalo. Do
you know about the development of relations between APPO and the CND,
if any? They are in so many ways on the same track,--the
extraordinary idea of parallel governments in both cities, (even if
the Coalicion came from above, and the APPO much more from below,and
has much better websites aesthetics). I am very interested in
filming behind-the-scenes of how the event gets organized--how people
choose delegates, etc.

In the meantime, I am seeeking collaborators to work on a bilingual
documentary and/or series of shorts on the movements in Mexico, for
international distribution. I am looking for video production people,
research people, computer graphics people to work with, if you know of
anybody talented in Mexico who would be interested in participating.

Hi Caitlin,

Thanks for getting in touch. And thanks Monty for forwarding
some of my stuff to Caitlin. I'm sure there's lots of video filming
going on here and guess some of it is by Indymedia-connected folks.
Certainly there will be Oaxaquenos going to DF for the Sept 16th
convention. I will post this exchange on the Oaxaca Study-Action Group
Yahoo discussion list, and am CCing it to people in: Ojo de Agua
Comunicacion (videoastes in Oaxaca), EDUCA (an active member of APPO,
whose director, Marcos Leyva Madrid, is going to DF as an APPO
member), the local Maryknoll lay ministers group and the Chiapas Media
Project.

You're right about the basic difference (from my anarchist
perspective) between APPO and the CND. Oaxaca's out front by a mile
theoretically, but the PRD and its allies are massive nationally,
though I believe the APPO-type formations are occurring in other parts
of Mexico. In any case, they certainly reinforce each other right now.
If the PRD is able to maintain a strong national political role in
governing Mexico, it too will be affected by the inevitable attraction
of exercising power, and then APPO will be opposed to such efforts,
but now they are strong allies. The main thrust of my efforts now is
to do everything I can to avert the possibility of the Mexican
military being sent here to crush the rebellion. That would result in
a terrible bloodbath. I'm hopeful it won't happen. I'll attach my most
recent piece in case you haven't seen it.
