1. NIS is pretty much worthless

Just remove it from your Add/Remove Program.. Nothing will be missed. Just put in Zonealarm if you're paranoid about security on your computer.

I'd also recommend dumping the NAV too - AVG is free and very reliable. free.grisoft.com

2. I second this advice.
I ditched Norton products years ago and haven't missed them a bit. I use the free Zone Alarm firewall and AVG antivirus. For spyware detection I use Spybot S&D. They all work very well, certainly better than anything coming from Symantec.

4. Third.
I first used and annually paid to renew Norton/Symantec because it came preloaded on the 1st Pc I owned, and haven't had one regret since ditching them 1½ year ago.
I use spybot too, and find that it and adaware both find things the other doesn't.

5. Because you have configured it incorrectly?
I've never had NAV block any sites that I frequent.
Look in the BLOCKED IP's list and see if, somehow, a DU log-in IP got put there by accident.
I've used NAV for many years now and never had any problems that I can think of!
But then again, I've worked in tech support. I had to read the Help files! ;)
Maybe, at the time it got blocked? There was a malicious trojan trying to install?
They do attach to pics and things like that, not that people post pics on DU...ever! :sarcasm:

7. And a fourth
Overblown, bloated pieces of shit.

If you're interested, visit google groups, alt.comp.freeware (or usenet if you prefer)and find the free alternatives for security, anti-v and cleaning your computer.

PS Greyl, bet you never thought I'd be agreeing with you eh?

8. Blame the BFEE.
Don't ask me how or why because I cannot provide any evidence to support any such claim since none exists, but hey, if it's good enough fot the conspiracy theorists, it should be good enough for you.

:)

12. Used to swear by Norton Systemworks, but I think it completely hosed
one of my computers.

My favorite episode was when Norton popped up saying something about one of its files had been corrupted and everything froze. I did a control-alt-delete and shut everything down in preparation to restart.

Norton pops up, completely overriding my restart saying something like "we must scan your system because something is wrong." Fifteen minutes it grinds away. Then it says "Norton has encountered a problem, please visit this website for more details."

I go to the website and it's basically "something got corrupted, and we recommend you restart the computer."

Thanks...Norton...

17. I had Norton on my old PC - it was trashed by viruses.
The PC tech recommended Trend Micro, which is what we use at work. I got PC-Cillian on my new one and have never had a problem since.
