Defamatory Sandy Berger scene in 9/11 show is THE culmination of the entire first half, it is IMPOSSIBLE to edit it out
by John in DC - 9/09/2006 04:33:00 PM

Okay, I just watched the Sandy Berger scene. It is beyond defamatory. The reports you've read do not do it justice.

We are 1 hour 54 minutes into the film, it is the culmination of the entire first two hours of the film. CIA agents on the ground with Commander Massoud have found bin Laden. They have him pin-pointed in a house. They are looking at the house with binoculars. They are on the phone with the CIA, that has patched in Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger. Berger, like a bumbling ass, sits there, looking every which way, refusing to give them clearance to grab bin Laden who is in their literal grasp. The woman at the CIA has to lecture Berger about how intelligence works, like he's some kind of moron. Berger literally looks like a deer caught in the headlights. He's clueless, an idiot, a moron, unfit to serve in any public office - hell, I wouldn't hire the guy to mow my lawn. After a very long pause, the agents are begging Berger to take some responsibility, stop being such a wuss, stop trying to cover his chicken-shit ass, you see Berger reach forward and the phone line goes dead. Clearly Berger has ended the call. Osama gets away. And Sandy Berger is personally responsible for killing 3,000 Americans and bringing down the World Trade Center twin towers.

Not only is this scene FAR MORE defamatory than any review I've seen to date, this is THE KEY SCENE of the entire first half of the movie. You can't cut it, or a good portion of the movie just makes no sense. But Disney/ABC can't leave the scene is because it simply did not happen. CIA agents weren't on the ground, they weren't with Massoud, nobody had bin Laden in their grasp, and Berger never refused to give the order to get the guy.

The entire culmination of the first half of the show is one big fat lie. This isn't just a small scene with a small error. It's THE scene and it NEVER HAPPENED AT ALL.

Disney/ABC took a national tragedy and turned it into their own personal soap opera. If this thing airs, Disney and ABC are going to see the kind of campaign that they have never seen before. If they thought the past week has been hell, just wait for the next seven weeks leading up to the election when we take them on legislatively, legally, and in the public sphere for abusing the memory of 3,000 dead Americans.

30. IF you must watch, I think CNN is going to play it...
I was thinking of going to the affiliate station and taking a sign that says:

THE PATH TO 9/11
LiEs LIES LiES

I ALSO DID A 4 PRONG LETTER - TO ABC, DISNEY, F.E.C & My Local paper thru a Louisianna DEM's action site.

http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum493.php

I had copied my letter, but I lost it. Sigh.

I do remember saying something to the effect that calling THE Path to 9/11 a "docudrama" is as obvious a lie as calling "Benny Hill" a serious film on avoiding sexual harrassment.

Also, I think I coined a new word.... even though it is ABC, I think we can safely call this a

FAUXudrama.

(Fox U Drama - and if you say if fast 3 times... or with the French pronounciation... It sounds like what the administration is trying to do to us with their lies.)

Cute? Eh?

bite them on the ass hard. They certainly deserve to be shown to be nothing but another conservative station, trying to lie, distort, and do whatever else they can to help keep the Republican majority strangle-hold on our government. They have GOT to be stopped this November, I really believe that the fate of our country and democracy depends on getting this corrupt criminal gang out of power.

16. Would it be smart to also have links...
that say Path to 911 without the slash...or is that not what Google is looking at?

Reason is I searched for it using 911 minus the forward slash...luckily there's already a number of stories linked on the first page that explain the controversy. There are also a couple others which are freep sites, but they're further down the page.

I am a baseball fan so I watched ESPN everyday but I stopped watching it since last Friday because Disney owns 80% of it. In the beginning I was not sure how long I can go on without it but so far I feel comfortable living without it.

I also want to see George Stephanopoulos openly criticize Bob Iger and quit ABC. As a former Clinton White House official, how can he stay in ABC after all these?

And where is Bob Iger's wife and former national news journalist Willow Bay? If she is an honest journalist and not a right-wing extremist, why doesn't she stop her husband from airing this liedrama? Or is it that she cannot stop her husband because he is a bad husband who does not listen to his wife?

It's quite possible they can all sue in the UK under much more favorable laws if the BBC runs this POS.

That particular word might be taken as the opening salvo if legitimate lawyers were involved with this at all, instead of the variety pumped out by unaccredited programs like the one at Liberty U.

It's high time somebody sued these lying bastards. Let's hope they all do.

Walt Disney was a notorious McCarthyite redbaiter himself.

Can you document it?

I've always imagined Walt to be a liberal utopianist.

He never used his financial, corporate, and media clout to produce anything beginning to resemble "Path to 9/11". The closest he came was the Mickey Mouse Club show.

I think Walt must be turning over in his grave by now.

52. There are some nasty, but flimsy, allegations about Walt out there
Take it all with a grain of salt:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney:_Hollywood%27s_Dark_Prince
<snip>
Walt Disney: Hollywood's Dark Prince is a biography by Marc Eliot, about the darker side of entertainer Walt Disney. Among the serious character flaws and deeds of Disney's of which Eliot claims are his life-long anti-Semitism (including a deleted scene from the 1933 Silly Symphony Three Little Pigs in which the Big Bad Wolf dresses as a Jewish peddler), his covert employment by the House Un-American Activities Committee as a spy against Communists in Hollywood, intense right-wing politics (claiming he wore a Barry Goldwater badge when receiving the Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon Johnson just before the 1964 election and refusing to lower the American flag at Disneyland after the assassination of John F. Kennedy) and his fear that he was the illegitimate son of a Spaniard.

The book has been intesively criticized for its fast and loose relationship with the truth, seemingly relying on hearsay and urban legends with very little solid proof. For instance, the theory of Disney being an illegimate child seems to stem from the fact that he never did have a birth certificate. This was because when he was born in 1901, it was commonplace for children to be born at home, as he was. Also, on the day Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Disney and his brother Roy had been scouting locations near Orlando for the future Walt Disney World. Far from not even lowering the flag, the next day (November 23, 1963), Disneyland was actually closed for one of the few times in its history. (One of the next was September 11, 2001.) Eliot was criticized at the Snopes urban legend website for holding Lyndon Johnson responsible for "campus demonstrations" as a result of his Great Society program, which was why Disney supposedly wore a Goldwater button while receiving his medal. The meeting took place in September of 1964, three months before the first major antiwar demonstration at Berkeley, half a year before Johnson would begin sending troops en masse to Vietnam, and a year before the president would put his Great Society into action. In any case, Disney had died by the time anti-Vietnam rallies would start to greater gain the nation's attention in 1967.

71. Thanks. I suspected as much. Urban legends. This Marc Eliot
creep seems to be a real piece of work, fabricating his own version of "Path to 9/11" to smear Walt's memory.

I do know that while my wife worked for the largest investing firm in L.A. for the grandson of the company's founder, she learned that the founder was both a left-leaning liberal and a close friend of Walt Disney. In fact, the man created a consortium which financed the creation of Disneyland for Walt because Walt wasn't able to get the help from the banks that he needed. If Walt had been some right-wing nutjob and a McCarthyite, this guy wouldn't have been close to him and wouldn't have helped him.

Walt would never have approved of what ABC has done.

He attempted to connect communism to a union labor strike on his company (this is a transcript from Mr. Disney's own words).

<snip>
SMITH: Do you have any people in your studio at the present time that you believe are communist or fascist, employed there?

DISNEY: No; at the present time I feel that everybody in my studio is 100 percent American.

SMITH: Have you had at any time, in your opinion, in the past, have you at any time in the past had any communists employed at your studio?

DISNEY: Yes; in the past I had some people that I definitely feel were communists.

SMITH: As a matter of fact, Mr. Disney, you experienced a strike at your studio, did you not?

DISNEY: Yes.

SMITH: And is it your opinion that that strike was instituted by members of the Communist Party to serve their purposes?

DISNEY: Well, it proved itself so with time, and I definitely feel it was a communist group trying to take over my artists and they did take them over.
<end of snip>

<link> http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cold.war/episodes/06/documents/huac/disney.html

This discussion starts approx. 1/3 down. The whole thing is a very interesting read.

I will go this far about Walt Disney, Hollywood was kicking this committees ass until Mr. Disney came along with his testimony. This was a very dark history in the U.S. and a lot of people did what they had to do, including Walt. This is a black stain on Walt Disney's legacy.

43. Answer: Yes, he can. However,
(1) he will have to find a judge today (a Sunday, when the courts are closed - not surprising that today is the day ABC chose to air this part of the series) who is willing to grant him an ex parte hearing and grant a temporary restraining order against ABC and Disney before the show airs tonight, which will not be easy;

(2) he will have to have the cooperation of Bill Clinton's attorneys so that they will provide the judge with a copy of the September 1 letter to Bob Iger that sets forth all the defamatory falsehoods contained in the crockumentary, and demanding that ABC eliminate all the falsehoods or not air the thing at all. The letter is formal legal notice of the defamatory nature of the piece and establishes "actual malice" required in libel actions brought by public figures;

(3) any judge willing to entertain such action today must be willing to forego the standard requirement that a written complaint be filed with the court prior to any hearing being granted - i.e., Berger must file a complaint first thing tomorrow morning when the courts open.

I've never seen a case like this where an order is sought over a weekend prior to a complaint being filed. It could be an appealable problem for Berger. OTOH, Berger's lawyers may be on top of this and may have quietly filed a complaint late last Friday afternoon.

55. I thought "prior restraint"
was generally regarded as unconstitutional by the courts.

It CENTERS around the lie about Berger: "How one decision changed the world." Wow, this is really sick.

44. And what is the point of a fictionalized version
of what happened leading up to 9-11 other than to defame and slander democrats? The lack of transparency is disgusting. ABC, I hope, reaps what it has sown. Bastards.

56. Remember: ABC is SELLING THIS AS THE TRUTH!!!
They have used terms such as "EXACTLY HOW IT HAPPENED" & "THE OFFICIAL TRUE STORY"

That my friends, is why they will get sued till kingdom come.

60. The front page of my Chicago Tribune TVWeek is splattered with
the following headline:

"ABC airs factual mini-series that points fingers and names names."

Nowhere in the whole write-up on the inside cover is there any mention that this is a fictionalized account, a docudrama or anything other than a factual account of "the how and the why of (the) attacks". The blurb furthermore encourages viewers to watch Path to 911 to really get "educated".

It's propaganda pure and simple.

Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 12:54 PM by Triana
..initiate a lawsuit against the ABC network? Goddammit I'll contribute $ to help pay for the attorneys - into the legal fund - I'm sure lots of others would too. And, maybe we can get the Clinton Foundation and the DNC on board too.

Aren't those PUBLIC AIRWAVES ABC is broadcasting this piece of trash on?

59. So basically, they took Bush's "deer-in-the-headlights" scene
on 9/11 in the Florida classroom and transposed it onto Berger.

Can the right-wing ever NOT practice projection?

Who plays the Sandy Berger role?

On IMDB, Sandy Berger is not listed on Full Cast and Crew for
The Path to 9/11 (2006) (TV)

62. It's running on BBC 2 right now
and I tell you it's a very boring, slow-paced "docudrama".... if someone is not really determined to watch it, they're in danger of falling asleep during the 160 minutes of the first part.

64. Yes, but it's a relief that "Path to 9/11"
isn't appealing to the voting moron crowd. After 20 minutes they'll probably go to the fridge, snatch another beer and switch the channel.

66. Reminding ABC statement of Sept 8 (Media Matters)

ABC statement on The Path to 9/11 claimed film not final, called attacks "premature and irresponsible" -- despite prior National Press Club screening, copies to conservatives

Summary: ABC Entertainment released a statement regarding its "docudrama" The Path to 9/11 stating that "o one has seen the final version of the film ... so criticisms of film specifics are premature and irresponsible." But ABC reportedly screened the film at the National Press Club and provided preview copies to conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and a number of right-wing bloggers.

Of course we already know what aired in New Zeeland and will in the rest of the world.

68. ABC's "Path to Lies" ( a new cartoon)
History should not be rewritten to please the political party that holds power, this is the first step towards an Orwellian world. I am very disappointed that the Disney Company, a unique American company would give up it's truly American values to support a partisan lie. The effect on the Disney brand could be devastating. To see my latest cartoon on this topic, go to my website and check it out.

69. Election swift boating
All this movie is, an election foil for the republicans. bush is getting heat because of his Iraq war. To take the focus off him the republicans are releasing this movie to 1) blame Clinton and 2) make points with the voting public.

They are not going to pull the movie, there is not democrat that can stop them from doing anything they want.

They also know that there is usually a hullaboo in the first couple of days about something and then people go on to something else.

That should not be the case here. The democrats and all like minded people should continue to boycott ABC, Disney and the ABC affiliates.
If someone had a website where people could go to find out how to do the boycotting of ABC and the sponsors and to keep the pressure on it would be very helpful.

75. Just saw that scene and then some...
Actually, the entire second half of tonight's "episode" is wholly devoted to blaming the Clinton administration- even bringing Lewinsky into it!!! This IS worse that I could have imagined. The one saving grace is that the movie itself sucks- but then, idiots who buy into stuff like this probably aren't necessarily connoiseurs when it comes to the arts and filmmaking.

This is truly beyond the pale. Shameless bastards!
