Language In CBS' 9/11 Special Causing A Stir - Some affiliates won't show
So, making stuff up is ok... but actual human emotion is not?

Language In CBS' 9/11 Special Causing A Stir

Serene Branson
Reporting

(CBS 13) SACRAMENTO Our newsroom and programming inboxes have been flooded with emails about the 9/11 special that airs Sunday. Hundreds have come in, most forwarded letters written by the American Family Association, but this CBS station has decided to stick with the unedited version.

Much of the video shown in the 9/11 special is raw, emotional, and disturbing. But hundreds of area viewers say they are more disturbed by CBS' willingness to air it as is, some offensive language included. They wrote in asking CBS 13 to refuse to run the program or move it after 10 p.m.

Elizabeth Murphy wrote: "I teach middle school and students who watch TV are vulnerable and easily influenced. Airing the show laced with profanity would legitimize its usage. It would be powerful enough without lowering network standards even further than they have already sunk."

Though parts of this documentary have aired before, twice in 2002; that was before the FCC changed its rules.

Profanity concerns prompt CBS to show "9/11" on web By Jeremy Pelofsky
Sat Sep 9, 12:47 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - CBS Corp. said on Saturday it would broadcast the documentary "9/11" on the Internet as well as the airwaves after several affiliates said they would delay or forgo the award-winning film because it includes profanity.

The documentary was produced by French filmmakers Gedeon and Jules Naudet and retired New York firefighter James Hanlon and has aired twice without incurring fines by U.S. regulators charged with enforcing broadcast decency standards.

CBS said affiliates that cover about 10 percent of the United States had decided not broadcast the program or would show it late at night, citing concerns they could be fined for airing profanity, primarily by firefighters during the crisis, before 10 p.m.

The American Family Association, which describes itself as a Christian organization promoting traditional values, has called on CBS stations to forgo or delay the "9/11" broadcast.

1. So the real thing gets banned, but fiction gets to air as "fact"
This is all just too much with its Orwelian implications.

9. They are disrespecting our firefighters!
From yahoo news:
"CBS said affiliates that cover about 10 percent of the United States had decided not broadcast the program or would show it late at night, citing concerns they could be fined for airing profanity, primarily by firefighters during the crisis, before 10 p.m."

These expletives were not profane in the context they were said, they expressed virtuous human emotions such are courage and concern and were said by courageous firefighters who put their lives on the line to save others. Many of them lost their lives.

The 'American Family Association' and those making these decisions have the unmitigated gall to disrespect these heroes, claiming that their language was profane. Now THAT is obscene.

Guess what? firefighters, cops, and soldiers often cuss to cope with the tremendous stress they are under. What's wrong with that?

On the other hand, when Cheney said 'Fuck yourself' to Sen. Patrick J. Leahy on the Senate floor, he meant it as an obscenity. Did the 'American Family Association' complain about it?

And guess what? kids will learn cuss words no matter what, after all, even the fake prudes of the 'American Family Association' know these words, and they ought to know they are not always said as obscenities.

10. Yes, they are disrespecting the firefighters!
In the context of the situation, watching a passenger jet
fly smack into one of the Towers, that word is exactly what I
would expect to hear at that given moment.

I'll take the 'F' word over a pack of lies any day of the week.

3. I'm not surprised that they're coming out of the woodwork
against this. They have been given a job. They are supposed to push people over to the BS ABC mockudrama and the CBS film is reality. This is the one by the French brothers, filmmakers who were already at a fire station when the attacks occurred

20. Yes, this is to push the ABC mockudrama, the CBS film's a repeat
and there was no protest the first time it was shown.

6. What the hell is the matter with people?
If your kids are old enough to see the horror and violence of that day, then they can hear some coarse language. If the F word bothers them, then they really don't need to see almost 3,000 people die.

Some people have really fucked (yes, overly sensative fundamentalist assholes, I said "fuck" and when you aren't around your kids say it too) priorites, you know that?

7. This quote from Apocalypse now popped into my head
We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!

Ain't that america?

Whenever you see those words, you know you are dealing with NOTHING but crazy people. Odd how these "Christian" organization NEVER seem to do anything to help the poor, homeless, people with AIDS, et al.
And you can really tell the AFA has been pulling their hair out since Howard Stern went to Sirius! WAAAAAAAAAAH!

17. My CBS affiliate is a Sinclair station - they're delaying it until
10:30 P.M. I suppose we're expected to be grateful that they're willing to show it all! I think this is the rebroadcast of a documentary originally shown about a year after the event, made by the two French filmmakers about the firefighters. It was actually very well done, and a good alternative to the piece of garbage that ABC is showing...

19. Interesting, mine is a Sinclair station as well (WGME in Maine)
and it is listed in the guide data as airing at 8pm...

My parents and I used to watch the local news on that station all the time until they polluted it with Mark Hyman's nutty right-wing commentary. We watch the NBC affiliate now.
