Anyone Have CBS Eveing News Stats for last nite?
I haven't seen them yet. I tried to watch again but just couldn't. Couric just has the most awful delivery. It is just too painful to watch.

1. I know a lot of cash has been dumped into Couric as CBS' new anchor
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 11:19 AM by Old Crusoe
but I'm not going to watch her, I don't think.

I don't know the ratings, but my hunch is they've dropped off after the first night.

I don't begrudge anybody a successful career track, and I'm happy that women are being given some top jobs, etc., etc., but I'm still don't see any reason to git rid of Bob Schieffer.

He was a veteran news man out of Texas and widely respected. FACE THE NATION, IMO, is far better than MEET THE PRESS.

3. Oh, yea. They've been dropping everyday
9.1 to start and by Thursday she was down to 6 something - and only 4.7 in NYC and ABC beat her in Chicago.

She is dropping like a stone.

I think there are lots of great women out there who would have done just fine. I was absolutely shocked when I heard that she was the one they had chosen.

9. Interesting. It will be a difficult situation for CBS if the other
commercial networks outdo her in ratings this fall, especially with an election coming up.

11. What will be interesting is what they will do when she completely
bombs. Which I think she will.

Don't you wonder what Dan Rather thinks of all of this?

2. CBS News
When you are supposed to get news, people are tired of the all the interviews with celebs etc. We want news and we want the truth. Why can't the networks understand this.

4. I agree with you. I always watched CBS - Dan Rather and
Bob Schieffer. I think that people who watched CBS News will just change the channel. They are wanting News not Entertainment Tonite.

6. And even they could have tightened it up a bit.
Couric is a disaster.

24. I know I have changed the channel.
After I gave up on CNN et al., I still watched CBS with Dan Rather and NOW with Bill Moyers on PBS. When Moyers got pushed out of PBS, I was gone. When Rather got pushed out of CBS I left as well. The only news I watch on TV anymore is BBC and LinkTV.

5. After Couric let Christine Whitman LIE on her show, I'll never watch again
Whitman said the EPA was 'down there' telling people NOT to breathe the dust.
A boldface LIE...and Couric said....nothing.

Infotainment should be a criminal offense.

7. Well, she is just "news." She is entertainment.
But I don't think that it will fly.

I have a good friend who likes Couric but even she can't stand to watch. And she was totally wierded out by her clothes.

8. They don't have last night's up yet (probably next week) but here's
info on Thursday:

Katie Couric beat Charles Gibson by almost three million viewers on her third night in the CBS Evening News chair. CBS averaged 9.48 million total viewers, compared to 6.58 million for ABC. (NBC's numbers won't count in the weekly average "because of low coverage due to the NFL opening game," CBS notes.)

CBS delivered a 2.5 in the 25-54 demo and a 1.8 in 18-49. ABC had a 1.8 and 1.2, respectively.

12. So - even if her numbers stay up - will that even be considered
serious news.? Or will it just be another Entertainment Today show?

I think CBS is really making some awful decisions lately - they want to make everthing Entertainment.

But there are some of us out here who really just want a good, honest, reliable news program.

13. It's run by the CBS News division, so I guess it's considered news.

Edited to add:

Hell, according to their website, "The Early Show" is considered news.

or the BBC. Two places where people who want News still go.

17. Yeah. That is my favorite. And no commercials!
And they always have both sides to an issue - not just one view.

Last nite they did a lot on Afghanistan and on airport security at Logan Air port. It was very interesting.

19. Do you know the "Jimmy Jimmy Bo-Bo" story?
Evidently an informed mom makes a nightly habit of watching Jim Lehrer's NEWS HOUR, and her 3-year old took a liking to the anchor, whom he began calling "Jimmy Jimmy Bo-Bo."

On his birthday, at his mother's request to PBS, Lehrer phoned the kid to wish him a happy birthday.

"Hello, Kevin? This is Jimmy Jimmy Bo-Bo."

I heard Lehrer tell this story on WAIT WAIT, DON'T TELL ME, one of NPR's weekend news quiz programs.

...because it must take dozens of boxes to wipe the brown lipstick off her face!

21. Last night NBC led with 'no connection between Saddam and bin Laden'.....
.....Katie led with the arrest of a man in N.Y. True....that was a big story, but the findings of the Senate committee was a huge story. I purposely tuned in to see what she led her broadcast with, and it confirmed that I'm going to be watching Brian Williams from now on.

22. Note to CBS: "lots of great women out there" and PSST Univision
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 12:21 PM by UTUSN
I've only had a chance to watch the first night, but it was RIDICULOUS!!1 Katie was standing, walking, showing leg all over the place. She was only on for 30 seconds in the first part where she introduced two pieces by reporters, then no-segue away, and she showed NO interest in the reports, curtly saying thank-yew-and-now. And all those "special" segments and interviews. She's trying to do the Today show in 22 minutes. It's REALLY SIMPLE, cbs and Katie: She just needs to PLANT HER ASS behind a desk and READ THE TELEPROMPTER!!!!1

Poster #2 above said it all: "lots of great women out there who could have done fine..."

Also, I don't know why the U.S. finds diversity such a big deal, such a challenge, so STRANGE. Big deal that Bahbwah WAHWAH was the first female co-anchor and now supposedly Katie is the first solo anchor.

If somebody would only look at Univision they would see a male and female co-anchor set-up, both professional in the Peter JENNINGS mold. And on other Spanish language outlets, there is a woman reading the news in a relaxed, conversational style, sitting behind a desk-----AND------with a single rose in a vase on the desk!!!1 Yes, ladies and germs, the women over there DO NOT DENY THEIR FEMININITY!!!!1 It's a shocker. They dress in tailored styles, but undeniably feminine. And they calmly READ THE NEWS. That is all.

23. Part Deux. & at the 5 P.M. slot, they have a news/entertainment
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 12:43 PM by UTUSN
show that makes no bones of trying to inform while being entertaining for an hour, before the hard news program starts.

It is "Primer Impacto," (hard impact). The regular hosts are a younger male/female, but frequent substitutes are two females. They have a glass and chrome table. Get where this is going? The women are ALL extremely leggy, and the camera is aimed, oh, somewhere at where the knees cross. And the women dress in an endless variety of sexy dresses, low cut, lots of bangles, and shoes and boots that can range from spiked heels to straps up to the knees.

It ain't difficult to figure out the thinking: This is a VISUAL medium. Even voluptuous gals can READ THE DANGED TELEPROMPTER, so if you're going to choose between a "serious" but un-visual gal and a SEXY gal, why not the more VISUAL for the VISUAL???/

The first 10 or 15 minutes are devoted to actual hard news. Then they do show biz stuff, a new music video, an interview. Weather (the gal is also HOT). Sports (guess what, a gal). Horoscope. Ending with cutesy animals or whatever.

Throughout there are sensational items (impacto) of mudslides, floods, car chases, rescues, etc.
