The House race to watch: Sensenbrenner vs Kennedy in WI-5
This is a congressional seat that is never listed as being "in play". Sensenbrenner has had the seat for 28 years without a serious challenger from either party. Its the most conservative district in Wisconsin, and he is one of the most powerful and wealthy men in Congress.

In 2004 a professor from UW Milwaukee became the Democratic candidate and ran against Sensenbrenner, losing roughly 2:1 (67-33) or thereabouts. Many people think its hopeless for anyone to try to beat Sensenbrenner... we just have to wait for the inevitable aging process to run its course.

But Kennedy has been hard at work building the party around WI, recruiting people to run for State and Local offices, and building networks in his district. Meanwhile, Sensenbrenner has been stirring up the country with his extreme stand on immigration. While Kennedy is knocking on doors and talking to voters in his congressional district, Sensenbrenner is out promoting the immigration bill around the country. Clearly, he thinks the seat is his and he doesn't even need to campaign.

Poll numbers as of a week ago show Sensenbrenner at 49% and Kennedy at 41% with 10% undecided. This is HUGE! Sensenbrenner is losing steam because of his own actions and complete identification with Bush, who the country is getting sick of. He's probably going to campaign on the tired old theme of "only the Republicans can keep you safe and secure".

Meanwhile, Kennedy and his supporters are out in the district every day talking to voters, spreading the word. Guess what! Republican women are sick of war mongering and worried about the loss of rights for women in this country! Kennedy has signed the Declaration of Peace and is endorsed by NARAL. His support is steadily building, while Sensenbrenner's is declining.

I'm working on the Kennedy campaign even though I live outside the district and I can tell you he's a wonderful candidate and has progressive values. Working for him fills me with HOPE for the future of this country. This is now in the realm of the POSSIBLE.

Have hope. Volunteer for a campaign. Contribute in whatever way you can. We CAN get our country back.

I know a lot about hard fights, my congress critter is Hastert IT it used to be Sensenbrenner back when I lived in Brookfield. I don't know much about WI politics anymore, but I do know that if Sensembrenner is worried about his race, even if he eventually wins, you will have done WI and the nation a great service by causing him to focus on his race rather then letting him coast and help other publicans.

5. It is hard work
One voter at a time. Sensenbrenner hardly even acts like he's from Wisconsin any more- he's so caught up in national politics and being a career politcian. He doesn't associate with people or politicians from Wisconsin. The worst part is that he has accumulated so much power that the people in his district really haven't had a choice for years. There may be some who feel he truly represents their interests, but I think there are probably more who don't. In some ways its just a matter of getting the word out about Kennedy, over and over. He's a great candidate, and I think anyone who meets him or hears him speak will vote for him unless they're stuck on the extreme right.

I used to live in Hyde's district in IL and it was impossible to get rid of him till nature took its course.

I'd love to see Hastert get dumped too!

10. This is the kind of race which is going to make the difference in Nov
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 11:42 AM by longship
We could see some races like this turn-over. If that's true, we could see fifty new House seats.

I really sense something happening in the US that is not being measured by polls. I hear all this anecdotal evidence that everything is going one way. There are going to be millions of people in November who are going to just vote for the Democratic Party. Many of these people are totally off the radar because of two reasons.

First, they aren't being polled because they aren't perceived as "likely voters" (who pollsters are fixated on). Or, they are cell-phone only and are not being called. Of course, the pollsters no longer knock on doors to check their numbers, so the pollsters don't even know that they're wrong.

Second, they've been long time, loyal Republicans who have come to the conclusion that ChimpCo must be constrained before they do more damage. The best way to do that is to restore balance in Congress by voting for the Democrats. They're really pissed, but being loyal Republicans, they aren't willing to give up their secret hatred for what's happening. Do you blame them? The Repukes demonize the liberal Democratic Party. But these Republicans, even though they won't admit it, will walk into the voting booth and put the Democrats into office.

11. Amen.
If the Republican party won't police itself- i.e. if the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee won't even investigate a President who repeatedly breaks the law- the party has to be booted out of power.
