1. A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun ...
On Saturday, September 9 at 8:00 am and Sunday, September 10 at 5:05 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America
Saul Cornell

Saul Cornell discusses his book "A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America" an appearance on American University's WAMU public radio. He explores the opposing sides of the gun control debate, saying both sides of the gun debate point to the 2nd amendment of the Constitution to support their views. According to professor Cornell, both sides base their opinions on a flawed understanding of the amendment. Prof. Cornell says that gun rights supporters focus on "the right to bear arms," whereas the gun control proponents look at the preamble, which addresses having a "well-regulated militia." According to Prof. Cornell, the 2nd amendment guarantees neither an individual right nor a right of the state but a civic right to protect the nation, state and community.

Saul Cornell is an associate professor of history at Ohio State University and is the director of the Second Amendment Research Center at the John Glenn Institute. He specializes in constitutional history and has studied at University of Sussex. He received his BA from Amherst College and a MA and Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of "The Other Founders: Anti-Federalism and the Dissenting Tradition in America" and the editor of "Whose Right to Bear Arms Did the Second Amendment Protect?"

The End of Iraq: How American Incompetence Created a War Without End
Peter Galbraith

In a discussion about the book "The End of Iraq," author Peter Galbraith describes America's relationship with Iraq since the invasion in 2003. Mr. Galbraith argues that the U.S. invaded Iraq with the intention of bringing democracy to that country but instead caused a civil war. Mr. Galbraith says Iraq is breaking up into three segments: a pro-western Kurdistan in the north, an Iran-dominated Shiite entity in the south, and a chaotic Sunni Arab region in the center. Book & Books in Coral Gables, Florida hosted this event.

Peter Galbraith is a senior diplomatic fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation and performs work on conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction. As a former U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, Mr.Galbraith negotiated the 1995 Erdut Agreement that ended the war in Croatia. Traipsing Into Evolution: Intelligent Design and the Kitzmiller vs. Dover Decision
John West and Casey Luskin
video link - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/0806/btv082606_4b.ram

John West and Casey Luskin respond to Judge John Jones's written decision in the case Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District. The case was a challenge to the Dover, Pennsylvania school board's decision to make students aware of the theory of intelligent design. Judge Jones ruled that the board's policy violated the Constitution because intelligent design amounts to little more than a religious theory. Mr. West and Mr. Casey review the case and argue that the theory of intelligent design is based on science not religion, and that proponents of intelligent design want to challenge the teaching of evolution on scientific grounds not religious ones. This event was hosted by the Discovery Institute in Washington, DC.

John West, senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, is associate director of the Institute's Center for Science & Culture and associate professor of political science at Seattle Pacific University. His books include "The Politics of Revelation & Reason: Religion and Civic Life in the New Nation" and "Celebrating Middle Earth: The Lord of the Rings as a Defense of Western Civilization." Casey Luskin, currently an attorney, was a researcher at the Scripps Institution for Oceanography from 1997 to 2002. He is is co-founder of the Intelligent Design and Evolution Awareness Center (ideacenter.org).

and soon devolved into a familiar right-wing pile-on hit piece of Judge Jones.

Too bad.

American Methods: Torture and the Logic of Domination
Kristian Williams

In "American Methods" author Kristian Williams argues that the U.S. Government has used torture as a method of social control and terror since the 1980s. Mr. Williams cites the 2004 Abu Ghraib prison incident, where American military personnel were investigated for the abuse of prisoners, as an example of traditional American torture. This event was hosted by Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, Washington.

Kristian Williams is the author of "Our Enemies in Blue: Police and Power in America." His work has been featured in Columbia Journalism Review, CounterPunch and In These Times.

Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush
Eric Boehlert

Eric Boehlert discusses his latest book, "Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush." He argues that the press is apprehensive about being critical of the Bush administration because they do not want to be accused of demonstrating a liberal bias. He argues that conservatives have gained greatly from the media's weak coverage of the Republican administration. Mr. Boehlert looks at the way the media covered the investigation into Karl Rove's role in the Valerie Plame outing, Whitewater, the Terry Schiavo right to die case, and Al Gore's 2000 presidential bid. He also examines the Bush and Clinton administrations' manipulation of the press and suggests that liberals need to learn how to better articulate their message to the press. Strand Bookstore in New York City hosted this event.

Eric Boehlert is a journalist and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone. He writes extensively on media, politics, and pop culture. His writings appear in the Hufffington Post website and Salon.com.

50. Very Good Program; Tells a Now-Familiar Topic Very Well
I taped this when they played it this morning, so I could play it back a couple of times and take notes. There was a lot of content here, real information, and so I think that this book, at least according to the presentation given here, tells about this situation very well, clearly and with a lot of examples for documentation. This is a very familiar topic by now, but this book is very well-researched, and I think that if you don't go to the trouble to compile a long list of examples of what you claim, that people will be able to dismiss it as a "polemic" that they can "choose to disagree with," and this author really delivers the evidence. Also, the author seems to avoid the other problem, that of having so many examples, that it is tedious to read. Although the case is getting easier to make all the time, as the media gets more and more abusive and fascistic, it is still good to have some real examples to sink your teeth into, and feel that you were in the real world with this argument, and not just totally abstract, with a claim only. The case came across really well.

I liked the author's larger, historic sense of this situation, and the threat of things, referring to the "titanic shift in the way the press covers the Bush White House, as opposed to the way it covered the Clinton White House," and the almost total change of standards over the past several years of the Bush/neo-con years. Later during the audience-question-and-answer part, there was some discussion of the mergers, downsizing, and general corporate takeover of all journalistic institutions, so that there are no longer independant sources of a free press, but are now just very small sections of huge, profit-making commercial enterprises, that have to carry their moneymaking weight, and advance corporate interests that they never used to have to concern themselves with. I think this is pretty much the core of the problem. During a discussion on what happened with that Reagan miniseries a few years ago on CBS, where they caved to archcon-group pressure and put it on cable, when there was nothing wrong with the program, the author mentioned that CBS at that time was trying to lobby the White House for further deregulation of the local ownership rules, to increase the number of media outlets a single corporation can own. There are corporate quid pro quo deals of this type all over the place now, destroying open journalism.

A lot of the author's discussion involved the way every political story is characterized, and how that influences things. Multiple examples given here, such as when Clinton first took office and had trouble getting an Attorney General confirmed, the New York Post jumped on it with a headline, "Another Failed Presidency?" like Bush I, immediately. The author could find not one similar headline about the current Bush, even though Bush is the worst and most hated President ever, with one huge failure after another. Newspapers and TV declared that Bush had "a mandate," even after two totally contested squeakers, yet after Clinton's huge 1996 win, many papers, etc., specifically mentioned that Clinton "did not have a mandate." During the "election" of 2000, Al Gore was treated as a "chronic liar who not only did not know who he was, but could not tell the truth." Everyone remembers the claim that Gore claimed to have "invented the internet," etc., which Gore never did. Bush meanwhile, was treated as "straight talker," "honest," "didn't care about polls," etc., and the bizarre "the one Americans wanted to have a beer with." It is interesting that the "framing" assholes fell for that lie hook, line and sinker, and attacked "the sheeple" for it, when there was NO SUCH POLL EVER CONDUCTED. Chris Matthews and other media operatives made it up, and they all repeated it! Unbelievable. The author even talked a little about that point, that I have also been baffled by, that the only two groups who still believe that Karl Rove is "brilliant" no matter how the Bush Administration goes into the approval rating toilet, are the archcon Republicans, and the Beltway media. Several times, the author referred to how isolated, etc., the Beltway media is, and probably everyone has noticed it by now.

There was the case of the Swiftboat story mentioned, where the media did not question the veracity of the Swiftboat group, even after their lies had been exposed, they were not even there, etc.; and then they went on an attack of John Kerry about Viet Nam era quotes, etc., hammering Kerry, yet gently questioning Ken Mehlman of the Bush campaign. Republicans are routinely referred to by the media as "winning," "skillful," "having a winning hand" with some issue, even when it was a disaster like the Terri Schiavo case, or Iraq, which they always call "The War on Terror" even though it isn't. Democrats are always referred to as "on the defensive,""playing catch-up," "disorganized," "they have no plan," the media snidely refers to "the Democrats' talking points," and never the Republicans', when they invented this crap. It is a free ride for their side, an endless stream of phony "charges" or attacks that Democrats have to try to answer, only to then receive more, etc., and so Democrats can only lose this game. "The Democrats need to move to the 'center,' " they put it, avoiding the fact that they are pressuring everyone to move to the "right," and never claiming that Republicans need to move to the center, or anywhere else. The "60 Minutes" National Guard memo case was referred to, where several producers, and Dan Rather, were fired for an anti-Bush story that, after all, was factually accurate, and what a threatening message that sends to all other reporters.

There was a humorous part where the author was going over the series of cable TV talk-fests where Anderson Cooper, Chris Matthews, and others, were trying their best to make it seem that Bush was "getting a bounce" in the polls from some event or other, and was going to be popular soon. It never happened, but the refusal to admit that Bush is not popular, weird and creepy, is a permanent thing with this media. There was a good discussion on the typical approeach to "covering" stories, so that they can remain censored at the same time. Giving the Bush-dodged-the-draft-then-dodged-the-National-Guard situation, the author first mentioned how the media totally ignored it during the 2000 campaign, covering it up themselves; then how they turned it to an attack on Kerry for the 2004. It was "reported" as, "Report the attack, the denial, then throw up their hands" like no one knows what really happened, and no one can ever know, like "the fog of war," etc., and this treatment was supposed to pass for "balance." Of course, they used to pretend that that vicious bastard Reagan was "popular," when Reagan was not:

(From the 1991 book "The Illusion of a Conservative Reagan Revolution" by Larry Schwab.)

The cases of the paid-off mouthpiece Armstrong Williams and the male escort with no journalistic background, Jeff Gannon, (and numerous other gay male pornographers connected to this White House), the Valerie Plame case, all hushed up and totally un-asked about by this strange media, and the comparison to what they would have done to the Clinton White House if any of this had happened then; there were many other highly instructive situations referred to, telling the way the media is now. I remember many years ago, that asshole Sam Donaldson with ABC "News," attacking and carping at Pres. Jimmy Carter, then cooing and grinning at Bush I, then attacking and carping at Pres. Clinton--like clockwork, and it has been since the 1980s. Now though, it is getting unbearable. That may actually be the good news, as it all becomes clearer all the time. This book seems to be a really good telling of this whole case, and the argument of what has happened. I'm going to read through it, and maybe buy. The clearer the whole story becomes in your mind, understanding all the lies and the cover-ups, and why, it makes your whole horrible headache go away.

47. He's doing fine, from what I've heard so far.
Seven weeks cost of Bush's Iraq war would subsidize student loans.

He speaks of positive plans while referring to the failures of the Bush administration. "I'm trying to behave" he said.

But are you really "attacking" or being "negative" when you're just pointing out the obvious facts?

A Low-key, fine job.

Journey of the Jihadist: Inside Muslim Militancy
Fawaz Gerges

Fawaz Gerges talks about the rise and transformation of the Jihadist movement in the Middle East. Professor Gerges breaks down the evolution of the movement into three generations beginning in the mid-1970s and says that while the goal of the first generation was to target and overthrow their home governments in the region, the most recent generation, influenced by Al Qaeda and the U.S. invasion of Iraq, is willing to attack any country they feel is working against them, including the United States. The talk was hosted by Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC. Includes Q&A.

Fawaz Gerges, professor of international affairs and Middle Eastern studies at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, is the author of several books, including "America and Political Islam: Clash of Cultures or Clash of Interests?" and "The Far Enemy : Why Jihad Went Global." He is also an analyst and commentator for ABC News. For more information, visit: www.journeyofthejihadist.com.
