Cruz Bustamante states ,"...I feel sorry for Maria."
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 07:13 PM by bliss_eternal
after he was asked for comment about Schwarzenegger's comments. Initially he said, "no comment..." then followed it with "I feel sorry for Maria."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa looked pissed. He said if the person he spoke of accepted the apology, he guesses that's enough for him. His eyes and look when he made this comment told a very different story. BTW, Villaraigosa has endorsed Angelides.

6. These comments:
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 07:16 PM by bliss_eternal
SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger apologized Friday for saying during a closed-door meeting that Cubans and Puerto Ricans are naturally feisty and temperamental because of their combination of "black blood" and "Latino blood."

He said the tape-recorded comments "made me cringe" when he read them in Friday's Los Angeles Times.

"Anyone out there that feels offended by those comments, I just want to say I'm sorry, I apologize," Schwarzenegger said. He added that if he heard his children make similar comments, "I would be upset."...

"I mean Cuban, Puerto-Rican, they are all very hot," the governor says on the recording. "They have the, you know, part of the black blood in them and part of the Latino blood in them that together makes it."

12. Bigots frequently are...
he tried to say he didn't mean them the way they sound. :eyes: I've never heard a racist apologist not say this sort of thing. He meant them EXACTLY as he said them--he just got caught.

On the tape of the woman (he said the comments about) accepting his apology, it looks so insincere and staged to me. She looks pissed--as well she should be. I can't respect someone that plays politics over holding him accountable for being an asshole.

This is at least the third time he's made racist comments. How many times can someone do the same thing and people not get that this is WHO he is?

27. I'm willing to accept some inconsistency
Not to "apologize" for him, but someone who grew up in another time and place can carry old views and new at the same time.

Remember when Bustamante said the "n" word during a campaign speech? The black community was very understanding. Cruz grew up amid poverty and racism in the Central Valley. Mexicans, whites, and blacks are still pitted against each other in those shitty little towns. It was a big flap for a day or so but didn't ultimately affect his support from blacks or white liberals.

The habit of characterizing races and nationalities is very old-fashioned European. Bismarck had a hobby of deciding what gender he thought various countries were. We've seen where this thinking ends up--so its manifestation (in Hitler's countryman, no less) is more disturbing than Bustamante's slip.

But it doesn't necessarily mean that, on better days, Arnold isn't a total Nazi. I don't think he would have had his particular career in Hollywood if his bigotry were absolute and debilitating (by which I mean--he's no Mel Gibson!)

31. No, I wasn't aware of that...
had I been aware that Bustamante EVER used the n word, he wouldn't have got a post on DU from me.

Just because African American political groups "appear" understanding doesn't mean that constituents or everyday people are.

Other time arguments don't fly with me. Sorry.

There's enough information available and social opportunities for people to challenge their stupid, bigoted beliefs. If they don't--they are just old bigots, with old ideas. Be a bigot apologist if you want. But I'm not ok with it on any level. Again, sorry--but I don't bend on this one. That's not an excuse. That's a reason for his thinking but it's not an excuse.

37. Not intended as an excuse
Just practical--you have to give people with these mental problems an out when they slip up. As long as they're trying. Otherwise, you corner them into a position of radical bigotry.

39. That's your choice...I'm good with radical bigotry.
It's the truth. Why not dwell there?

Why give assholes with mental impairments excuses? He's got just as much available to him as the rest of us, hell...more.

Sorry. Again, I won't give leeway to this sort of creep. You can do as you like. Free world.

42. I grapple with this
And always come to the conclusion that people have to be given the chance to change.

Otherwise, as your post makes explicit, you give in to the permanent existence of bigotry.

I would rather hate bigotry than the bigot.

45. That's fair...
to hate bigotry and not the bigot. Frankly I strive to do the same, but that has nothing to do with calling it what it is.

If someone makes the effort to change that's an entirely different matter, and not what I've been talking about here. I don't like people tip toeing around this and pretending it's something other than what it is. In the process of doing so, you aren't doing anyone any favors either.

You have to recognize the problem before it can be addressed. Inching around it and calling it other names, making excuses and justifications for it doesn't change anything.

What Arnie is doing is not seeking help or change. What he did today is called, covering his ass. Politics plain and simple. He knows it looks bad and he's apologizing. He didn't really take responsibility for what he said if you really listened to him.

Sorry--won't be edging around that Nazi with excuses or validations for "his generation" or "old way of thinking." Dude needs to seek help and say something other than what was said today before he gets a pass from me. IF and when people seem sincere, that's something altogether different. He didn't. Trotting out the woman he talked shit about didn't help either.

I've gone round and round on DU about this very thing. It seems to me that people that don't actually possess any characteristics to have ever been discriminated against have a very different perspective on these things than those that do (women, blacks, latinos, glbt, jews, etc.) That's ok. But they shouldn't be so quick to tell others what bigotry is or what it looks like, or why it exists. They know why it exists--no one needs a damned tutorial on "the roots of racism" thank you very much.

I have yet to call the asshole my governor. I didn't vote for him, I voted AGAINST the recall, and have been very vocal about my feelings regarding him.

I think CA women's groups should be all over these comments, as should the NAACP, latino groups, immigrant groups, etc.

I don't know a lot about him. I didn't like how he threw his hat in the ring to run against Davis during the recall. That pissed me off, we needed his support for Davis and against Arnie the Asshole.

But if you have other information on Cruz, I'd love to hear it. I like to be informed. :)

15. So does this mean that Latino blood can be sold...
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 07:28 PM by Kutjara
...as a stimulant? I mean, who needs Starbucks when you can load up an armful of the finest Honduran Red and 'Ay Caramba!' you're firing on all cylinders for the rest of the week. This will be a boon for pasty white men, who's womenfolk will now have the benefit of a hot Latin type between the sheets (without actually having to learn Spanish or anything).

I forsee a booming market in ethnic blood products. Got a big math test tomorrow? Pick up a pint of Sangre de Shanghai on the way. You'll ace it! Finances a bit tight? Download some Scottish claret and you'll be pinching pennies till the cows come home. Big dinner party? Fill a vein with French blood and you'll be whipping up souffles like a pro (when you're not cowering under the kitchen table, that is).

Oh yes, Ahnold, it's all about the blood. Just like another famous Austrian used to say.

She said what she was asked to say to save face. That doesn't mean she isn't offended. Anyone watching her making the announcement could SEE that she was.
