Mayor's Ethics Questioned in Business Loan to Sons

DERBY (CT) — An ethics complaint has been filed against Republican Mayor Anthony Staffieri concerning the $60,000, city-administered, low-interest loan approved by the Board of Aldermen for his two sons earlier this year.
The money went to a limited liability company set up by Staffieri's sons — Paul and Anthony Jr. — along with Jeff Hughes, the brother of board President Ken Hughes.

The partners plan to use the money for renovations and new equipment for the Staffieri family owned restaurant, Connie's, on Elizabeth Street.

Mel Thompson, a former Democratic candidate for Congress in the 5th District, filed the complaint Thursday afternoon, personally delivering a copy of the three-page document to the town clerk's office.

"I did this because I feel the mayor crossed the line, and in doing so, has harmed the integrity of his office and of the city of Derby," Thompson said. "The mayor's office was, and is, the governing city authority and responsible for processing these types of funds. "What the mayor did appears to be unethical and I want the ethics board to investigate."

He referred to portions of the city ethics code, which, he said, prohibit "engaging in any business or transaction that results in a financial interest, direct or indirect, that is in substantial conflict with the proper discharge of the official's responsibilities."
