JOHN BOLTON CONFIRMATION IS DEAD
JOHN BOLTON CONFIRMATION IS DEAD
By Steve Clemons

Several well-placed sources close to the Bolton nomination process have reported to me that the Bolton confirmation process is now dead.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is "highly unlikely" to reconsider Bolton's confirmation again as things now stand.

One insider reported, as far as the Committee is concerned, "we consider the confirmation over. It's dead."

......................

Senator Lincoln Chafee gets this week's 'Conservative with a Conscience' Award for his principled stand on the importance of America's Middle East diplomacy and for making the Bolton confirmation process an appropriate vehicle to express his concerns.

He's just pandering to get re-elected.

14. Of course it's an election year move, but it's a pretty damn good one.
But, I think there's more to it. Some "personal" indiscretion that has been bubbling under the radar. Bolton has a history of sexual weaknesses.

BushInc may have needed Chaffee to make this move AND let him use it to win back his seat for his appearance of being tough on Bush.

21. I agree.
It wouldn't make me vote for him for Senate, if I were in RI, but I support his receiving a conservative with conscience award, especially considering it may not be enough to keep him in office.

36. Let's see how long his opposition lasts - this really feels like election
strategy, not sincere concern from Chaffee OR Lugar.

37. It is an election year ploy!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x233910

"Chafee is fighting for his political life. Next Tuesday, Rhode Island primary voters must decide between Chafee, the Senate's most liberal Republican, and Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, who is challenging him from the right. If Chafee survives the GOP primary, he must then win reelection in one of the most Democratic states in the country....Republican leadership aides said GOP leaders are willing to give Chafee some room to maneuver ahead of Tuesday's primary. But they indicated they will probably push for a vote after the polls close next week."

3. HOLY SHIT.
Amazing.

It just doesn't make sense... is Chafee digging in his heels? Maybe he feels like he has nothing to lose.

Also note- this wouldn't be possible if the Democratic minority wasn't unified in opposing Bolton. Just one Dem crossing the aisle would've given Bolton the green light. Kudos to our folks on Foreign Relations.

7. A friend of mine in Indiana said
Lugar made it clear that he wouldn't advance bolton if he didn't get an up vote in committee. They must not have got the votes.

It doesn't matter to bolton -- scrubbie will just appoint him again.

13. He CANNOT appoint him again
If he doesn't get through committee, he's finished at the UN, period.

You can't douible up a recess appointment, as criminal Otto Reich discovered earlier in Bush's tenure.

Bush could reappoint him during an upcoming congressional recess, but Bolton could not receive a salary and he would be viewed as being in a weakened position.

19. Interesting
Knowing Smirky, he'll go for it, but it will take the gloves off entirely about Bolton's conduct. I sort of hope he does it, because Bolton will become the face of the GOP for the rest of Smirk's term. And it's an ugly, intolerant, arrogant, smug, and ignorant face...perfect for our purposes.

28. which leaves open the possibility
that * will reappoint Bolton, and that wealthy benefactors will pick up the tab to make up for Bolton's lost salary.

Do you think that wouldn't happen?

the Warron Terra and go right ahead and reappoint him during recess.

We all know he believes he can do LITERALLY anything he wishes because of the WARRON.

Wolfie and Perle at least have a veneer of education and civilization. Bolton is an untrammeled Repuke id, rampaging through a world of perceived enemies, acting like the baboon he is. Sorry to our hairier fellow species.

29. My thoughts exactly
They dumped Harriet Myers and we get Samuel "Unitary Executive" Alito.

Ashcroft was replaced by Alberto Gonzalez.

Maybe Bush will nominate that general who said that his god was bigger than their god to replace Bolton?

12. This is a good first step
Considering the initial reports when Bolton's nomination was added to the Repug's "to-do" list, this is a great sign that the Dems are not going to back down from and allow these purely political gestures to tie up the legislative agenda. I hope the trend continues. Even though Bolton is not the hot topic right now, to back off and let his nomination sail through would be perceived at best as caving to public opinion. "Waffling" if you will. I'm tired of the old Democratic argument that we need to save our ammo for the biggest fights. Bolton is the wrong choice for this position now, just as he was at the time of his recess appointment.

The fact that they announced the vote was tabled, rather than just tabling it and beating Chafee up in private, seemed to say, well, he wasn't going to make it through the senate anyway.

31. So what slug will * drag out from under which rock that can be
worse that that snake in the grass. Believe me, every time you think they've scraped the bottom they manage to go lower still.

Also, does this mean that Bolton needs to "cease and desist" doing wreaking havoc and sowing seeds of destruction until another nomination can be made? I would hope that we can give the world a respite and just time to breathe and reevaluate before launching into another round of the BS that passes for foreign policy these days.
