Goebbel's Principle of Propoganda (it sounds way too familiar)
http://www.psywarrior.com/Goebbels.html

1. Propagandist must have access to intelligence concerning events and public opinion.

2. Propaganda must be planned and executed by only one authority.
a. It must issue all the propaganda directives.
b. It must explain propaganda directives to important officials and maintain their morale.
c. It must oversee other agencies' activities which have propaganda consequences

3. The propaganda consequences of an action must be considered in planning that action.

4. Propaganda must affect the enemy's policy and action.
a. By suppressing propagandistically desirable material which can provide the enemy with useful intelligence
b. By openly disseminating propaganda whose content or tone causes the enemy to draw the desired conclusions
c. By goading the enemy into revealing vital information about himself
d. By making no reference to a desired enemy activity when any reference would discredit that activity

5. Declassified, operational information must be available to implement a propaganda campaign

6. To be perceived, propaganda must evoke the interest of an audience and must be transmitted through an attention-getting communications medium.

7. Credibility alone must determine whether propaganda output should be true or false.

1. The Newt taught it to up and coming GOP congress critters
New Yorker Magazine did a good bio on the Newt and his teachings back in fall of 94 or 95. It goes into how he taught the Goebbels method.

2. Goebbels'. Not Goebbel's.
During Goebbels' time as minister of propaganda and public enlightenment, all of those points were contentious. It was not always possible to get the declassified information on time, others were continuing to produce counterproductive propaganda, others were taking actions that could undo months of work in a single night... the credibility issue, too, was a big fight all along. The Total War speech came in part out of such an argument, over how much bullshit the people could be expected to swallow. It was obvious by that point that the people were in misery, and telling them the piss falling on their legs was rain just wasn't going to work any more. Imagine the arugments that went into getting THAT one approved.

Anyhow, what's the deal with the bolded text? Probably I've had one too many beers to figure out what the emphasis means. I'd be interested in hearing it. This could be a cool conversation.

3. attention-getting communications medium? Hell that's TV
#6
To be perceived, propaganda must evoke the interest of an audience and must be transmitted through an attention-getting communications medium.

Disney and ABC have done it, they're using their attention-getting communications medium (TV) to evoke interest of an audience about how 9/11 but refusing to admit that what they created was the republican viewpoint

4. Wouldn't all communications media be attention-getting?
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 11:12 PM by UncleSepp
I mean, if nobody's paying attention, no communication is happening.

I think #6 just says "don't be boring, and even your interesting message isn't good propaganda if you're simply sticking it on poles and hoping someone reads it."

That principle can be extended to say that propaganda targeted toward a specific audience should be carried by a medium that reaches that audience. Again, it's an achingly obvious thing to say, but may need to be said.

6. A medium that reaches a very specific, limited target audience.

What is this video iPod of which you speak? It is not rock? It is rock that play pictures? ;-)

It's good for reaching the market demographic of the video iPod itself - a young, affluent audience. It's also going to reach an audience who is already looking for the content. In that respect, it behaves more like books (not free) than like billboards (free), and is better for solidification than expansion.

It's also not free. The consumer pays to buy the hardware, and the producer pays to create the podcast.

On edit: What is up with your snark, pal? I can't even tell what you're responding to, or for that matter, where video iPods came into this. Then again, sometimes I don't get people's humor. Are you going for an informal, joking tone here, and not snark?

8. Just shows that Rove has nothing on Goebbels...
Rove can be beaten. The whole Republican noise machine can be beaten, they aren't as effective villains as the Nazis were, and the Nazis were beaten.

10. Pick your style book. I'm a Nazi nazi, not a grammar nazi.
The point is to get the man's name right, not where the apostrophe goes.

12. As you see it, what are the weak points in the GOP's propaganda efforts?
And, more to the point, how can it be fought?

11. To what extent is the GOP "noise machine" controlled by one authority?
Is it centrally controlled, or do the various people involved think up the talking points independently and distribute them to their peers?
