I am a gentle man, but I may wind up in jail or the hospital ...
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 08:49 PM by 11 Bravo
before the November elections. The next time anyone calls me "unpatriotic" or a "cut and run coward", it is game on, mother-fucker.
I'm a volunteer for the Webb campaign, and was manning a table at a farmer's market this morning. Virginia being Virginia, I frequently encounter Republicans, but, by and large, they have been civil ... until today. A couple approached my table, and the man became immediately hostile. He told me that Jim Webb advocates "Cut and run", and that Jim "doesn't support our troops". I tried to explain to the man that Jim is a highly decorated combat veteran who has consistently supported our troops. He pretended to listen, but then he turned his vitriol on me. I was told that "Democrats are hurting our troop's morale." OK, that's bullshit, but it's one man's opinion. Then he said, "It's cowards like you that are going to lose this war". I didn't say a word, I simply removed my shirt, (although at 6' and 170 lbs it was hardly a Hulk Hogan moment.)
I was wounded twice during my time in the A Shau Valley. It's funny, the one that almost punched my ticket just left a small hole that looks like an extra nipple, but, ironically, the frag that amounted to little more than a flesh wound left me with some really spectacular scars on my chest. I let the guy look for a few seconds, and then I turned around, showed him my back, and asked, "Do you see any wounds here?
The guy walked away, and afterwards I felt like a drama queen, but at that moment I didn't have time to think.
What is it with these bastards? Why do they feel the need to denigrate the courage and patriotism of anyone who disagrees with them?

Wow! You totally rock for this.
Some people have to be shown and you did that.

I salute both your service to this nation and your incredible willingness to serve it now. I wouldn't second guess these actions at all. You probably did the only thing that would both get his attention and shut his mouth.

I salute you! :patriot:

You just keep on doing what you are doing and keep that attitude. Drama Queen? I don't think so. More like a dose of reality that troglodyte had never had or certainly didn't anticipate.

It happens occasionally that calm, reasoned discourse with individuals of differing opinions provides for an arrival at an understanding, if not a change of mind or heart. But some are so set in their ways they approach the opposite opinion with a preconceived notion completely unshiftable. That approach is often couched in anger born of frustration as well as perspective gathered from limited sources.

You just keep on keeping on, majestic, poetic warrior.

The reasonable among us are behind you.

29. Maybe, maybe not. But it shouldn't matter.
Military service doesn't convey any great sense of wisdom. My point is that it seems to be the Repubs that have decided to question our patriotism. I've just decided enough is enough.

20. I know how you feel. I felt the same way when
some Repuke decided to single me out when I was passing out flyers for a candidate to tell me that Tommy Franks was a great general. Well, his combat record says he's not, but why come after someone who is out there basically preaching to the choir? So I did what I could to get out of his way before I threw something at him.

It's going to be tough going into the election. Don't let them play your strings. Incidentally about that patriotism bit, remind them that accusing Germans of being unpatriotic is how Hitler got them to back his wars, which deep down they knew weren't right.

22. It's a defense mechanism called Projection.
People poo-poo "psycho-babble" and some psychological theorizing is BS, but defense mechanisms are basic psychological functions that allow us to deal with psychological stress, such as conflict and guilt.

Projection allows us to ascribe our own less than acceptable thoughts and feels to others.

The questions are: to what extent, i.e. how much do I/you depend on it? Do I/you recognize what I'm/you're doing? and what do I/you do about it? Or do I/you recognize it and just lie about what it is anyway?

So sending our Troops into an illegal war based on lies, sending them into battle ill equipped, doesn't bother him? Allowing them to come home to no benefits, no resources to deal with their emotional and physical wounds doesn't bother him? Who supports the Troops?

25. Same thing happened to me thru an email...
I was called a coward, unpatriotic and the military is better off without me and my husband. We're both vets and he was sent to Panama and the first Gulf war.

All these people have is to strike back in the worst possible way so they can feel better about themselves. I should be angry, but all I can do is feel pity for them.

And then he had to walk away without doing any damn thing else.

You placed a mirror in his face and showed him the true coward and he could do nothing but take it. He's gonna take that one to the grave.

to this country once, and at that table in the farmer's market, you did so again.

To answer your question, they feel the need to denigrate true courage because they have never had it, have rarely if ever seen in, and absolutely do not understand it. You showed the weaseling little bastard what courage is made of: "Do you see any wounds here?"
Priceless.

56. Cowards
The reason these people spout off is because they are cowards inside. None of them probably defending our country in time of conflict because they were too much of a coward to go in the military. Just like the two cowards in the white house. Have you ever noticed that they are the ones who huff and puff the worst. Look at rove got deferrment after deferrment because "he was going to school". But he stands up like he is a MAN and pretends that the democrats are the cowards.

58. PS
Had to post this...First I am 75 and a little old short woman.
I was standing in our WalMart Grocery waiting for my son to get two Subway sandwiches. In comes a man with a T-shirt on that says BUSH COUNTRY....My America...I could not help myself I burst out laughing and rolled my eyes. He stopped short and looked and I giggling all the while stared at him. Just then my son 6 foot 2 and 200 lbs walked up from Subway and the guy kept on going. My son wanted to know what was the matter and I laughed and said tell you later.

When the guy thought he could say something to the little old lady he was ready to go....that is till he saw my son. And I say it over and over and over they are all cowards absolute abject cowards.

69. And that voter thinks George "Macaca" Allen supports our troops?
Nothing could be further from the truth. Allen doesn't even support the best interest of our Commonwealth. He is a Bush Brown Noser and if it comes down to what is in the best interest for his constituents or what does Bush want, Bush wins.
I can't believe that little turd tried to steal Durbin's bill. Now that's how an honorable man operates -- NOT!

And obviously this asshole was following in his role model's footsteps.

You are a better man than he is in several ways. You took a public stand to advocate your candidate, something I'm sure he would never do. You were seriously wounded in the service of your country, and I'm sure this candy-ass never even put on a military uniform in his disgusting life. And you kept your cool in the face of such blatant ignorance.

I congratulate you on how you handled yourself against another sorry example of Bush's "base."

I wonder:
1) If he is of age, why doesn't HE volunteer to go over there?
2) Would he volunteer his kids or grandkids to go over there?

Answer is probably no, on both counts. It's so much easier to bluster about patriotism when you are not on the front lines.

Again, you handled yourself admirably.

There is only so much you can take. I know just what you mean "Virginia being Virginia." I actually became friends for a day with the Republican precinct captain I was up against on in the 2005 General Election. Only two rude people all day and the precinct is a big one. This guy opened the door and you shut it in his foot. Next time try just telling him the story. I'm sure it's very powerful and they next nitwit will run off.

Isn't it great to have a Senate candidate who just kicks ass and resonds in kinc with megatons of integrity. Webb could be one of the great modern Senators. Don't see him becoming part of the "gentlemens' club," although he is a real gentleman.

120. This response was once posted on DU & its one of the best
"A group of young conservatives were congregated outside of a local shopping mall that I needed to visit this evening. I think the point of the rally was to voice a preference for approving Bush judicial appointments; but they were also displaying full "Support out troops" regalia. Let me point out here that from 1970-71, I was a combat infantryman, twice wounded, and I support "the troops" with all my heart. In any case, one of the young repubs noticed my Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker (yeah, still); and decided to brace me about it. I listened to about 5 minutes of "You don't love your country" and "You don't support our fighting men" bullshit, before I launched. I pretty much shouted at the young man who appeared to be their leader, "I'll tell you the same thing I told the candy-ass Young Republicans who met me with their "Support the Troops" signs when I was released from Walter Reed Army Hospital in 1972. The only kind of support we were interested in was fire-support, boy; so either put down your sign and pick up an M-16, or just shut the fuck up."

Sorry I didn't keep the link, I just copied the post, so I don't know who to credit..but it's a keeper who ever wrote it. Best of luck with Webb, it's looking very good!

Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 08:56 PM by Greylyn58
My father(a life long Democrat) served in the Marines for 30 yrs. He spent almost 12 months in Korea, lost one brother there(he was 18 yrs old). He is an Uncle I know only through a few pictures and my Dad's stories. He served during Vietnam and almost ended up in country twice-something I found out just recently. Both sides of my family have a history of military service and are damn proud of it. Most of these bastards never served in the military.

To quote General William Tecumseh Sherman:

It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood...War is hell.

If any of them had ever served they would want our men and women home from the hell that the Bushies have created in Iraq. We support the troops by supporting them and not the administration who put them into this Hell!!!

I hate these people more and more every day. I really dislike what they are doing to this country and to me personally with their constant crapola!!!

Oh and to answer your own question, you were not a drama queesn. It was definitely an appropriate response to these whack-jobs!!! Sometimes, in-your-face is the only thing that works-not most of the time, but sometimes.
