If Katie Couric is pissing you off, PLEASE write CBS and let them know!
I just did -- I called her the "functional journalistic equivalent of Britney Spears" and a "fawning courtier", and stated that I would no longer watch the CBS Evening News while she is anchor.

What set me off was a little preview blurb shown during the evening news show of my local CBS affiliate (which I like alot) of her "Notebook" segment having to do with her interview with bush*. Gag-inducing in the extreme, when she started gushing about his "Texas swagger", I just couldn't take it anymore. I switched channels, headed over to http://www.cbsnews.com/ , and fired off a comment.

If you feel as disgusted as I do, please go to the link, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Contact Us". Choose "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" from the dropdown menu in the pop-up window and let them have it.

I was true to my word and refused to watch her tonight, so I spared myself the spectacle of her Limbaugh interview -- which would have no doubt raised my blood pressure to even higher levels. For those who had the fortitude to do so, I'm sure you'll have even MORE choice words to share with CBS.

Don't suffer in silence -- let CBS know what you really think of their new product!

4. Okay -- so are you going to write to CBS?
The whole point of my post is to get some feedback rolling into CBS -- there ought to be enough DUers to make some kind of impact if they're willing to take a few minutes to express themselves. At least, that's my hope...

5. They'll Just Give Her A Raise
Ain't no way Katie is going Anywhere for awhile. You don't shell out the BIG BUCKS contract, and lure someone from a cushy job at another network, unless you're in it for the long haul.

Best way to show your anger is NOT WATCH. Even though many DUers feel it is their right to turn it on each day, by making the program insignificant, you are sending the best message possible.

Katie Who?

6. How does "not watching" send a message?
You have to TELL them you're not watching. There are no little meters on our TVs that record who is watching what. I fail to see how the passive act of "not watching" will have any effect, as opposed to actively expressing your disapproval.

I know it isn't likely that Katie will be going anywhere, but what good does it do to remain silent in the face of the idiocy being foisted on us?

7. as Olbermann said last night........
...the true test of how she's doing is not judging by the first night but after the first 6 months!!

Anyone can do well on the first night because people are watching purely out of curiosity if nothing else.

8. I sent this.....
"I heard that Rush Limbaugh was featured on the Thursday edition of the CBS Evening News. Since you're moving in this direction, here is a list of other guests of a similar quality you might feature:

Fred Phelps
Tom Metzger
David Duke
Duke Cunningham
Jack Abramoff
Jeff Gannon
The Stars of the WWE

This Katie Couric thing is working out great."

Btw, my apologies to the stars of the WWE. I was speaking in terms of credibility, not morality.

10. The point I am hoping to make is that we ought to be making a little noise
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 07:08 PM by scarletwoman
Not just sitting back and waiting to see if her ratings drop.

I don't have cable or satellite, my only TV news choices are CBS, NBC, ABC and PBS. And no matter how many people are watching cable, the so-called "Big Three" networks STILL have the largest audience share by far, when compared to cable. AND they -- and especially their ADVERTISERS -- are desperate to hang on to this audience share.

Which is why I believe that active feedback is at least worth a shot.

15. "Spunky" about what? The only times I've seen her be "spunky" is when
she's defending conventional wisdom against a dissenter.

She wouldn't know "speaking truth to power" if it was a 2X4 hitting her on the head. Feh.

14. Here's what i wrote...
Found a link on bottom of www.cbsnews.com "contact us" and pull down menus on popup for CBS EVENING NEWS and COMPLAINT:

I would like to express my disgust that you gave Rush Limbaugh a platform on your prime time evening news segment "free speech". This was not news, or free speech. It's biased and twisted opinion- and his opinion, unchallenged, will leave people with the impression that your news division supports his positions. He is a notorious liar, former drug addict, and corporate shill, who distorts, ignores, or invents facts to fit right wing ideology. Giving him the opportunity to spread his propaganda to a your impressionable audience is unbecoming of a major US news division that has a long tradition of providing unbiased news to the country. After watching your "Are We Safer" special last night I'm wondering if that objective reporting in service of the public is now lost to corporate and right wing interests.

If you are going to continue this segment, I would suggest you give allow rebuttals so people can respond to bias and misstatement of fact.

Also, Katie Couric is a big disappointment- not just for an apparent bias in her reporting, but the superficial talk show tone of the show. You've lost me as a viewer.

I loved Bob Sheiffer. He has wisdom, intelligence, a depth of experience, humor, and gave knowledgeable and informative interviews. Get him back and i'll watch again.

Add a little emphasis by writing CBS and telling them she sucks! (see link in my OP)

19. KO says she's lost a quarter of her audience already
and if she keeps losing viewers at that rate, by the time she's been there 2 months there will be 38 people watching the CBS evening news.

20. I have to admit that I'm taking the degradation of CBS news personally.
I don't have cable, so network news is all I've got -- beside PBS (which is problematic -- to say the least -- in its own way).

I've been a longtime CBS Evening News viewer, prefering it to the other two network news shows. I mostly trusted and respected Dan Rather -- relatively speaking, as mainstream news "personalities" went.

I really appreciated the tenure of Bob Shieffer, he seemed like an intelligent, honest and honorable man, not someone flogging his own ego or shilling for the "conventional wisdom".

I was really crushed and saddened when it was decreed that Katie Couric was going to replace him. I was willing to take a look, just to be fair (like a good liberal), but since I couldn't stand her on the Today Show, I didn't see how she could possibly transform into someone I'd want to hear the news from.

And her performance of the past 2 days has just confirmed my worst forebodings -- she's just a shallow, vapid court stenographer for the right wing power complex. Ugh.

Peter Jennings on ABC seemed to have some integrity, but he's long gone. (RIP, Peter) And NBC has occasional moments, but it's pretty slim pickings.

So, I feel like I've got nothing now, as far as national TV news goes -- and it pisses me off. :-(

29. Why even bother to tune into that drivel to begin with? It serves no
purpose, you're not informed. You're merely entertained by -- ENTERTAINERS. That isn't news she's delivering. You can't get news in 12 second sound bytes.

Turn off your teevee and read.
