UPDATE: Scholastic Responds To ABC's "Path to 9/11" Controversy
In a statement released late this afternoon, education publishing giant Scholastic announced it is permanently withdrawing the materials it originally created for classroom use in conjunction with "The Path to 9/11." Materials that Media Matters for America first noted, was "rife with conservative misinformation."

According to Scholastic Chairman, President and CEO Dick Robinson, the materials "did not meet our high standards for dealing with controversial issues." New materials will be posted tomorrow. Additionally, the new materials will make clear Scholastic had no involvement in the development of "The Path to 9/11" and that the company is not promoting the primetime mini-series.

16. They have NOT CAVED YET. See this thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2816076&mesg_id=2816265

They want kids to watch SIX HOURS OF LIES, and then spend five minutes telling them some of it was not true.

Don't celebrate--read the thread, then fire off an email to them: http://www.scholastic.com/aboutscholastic/offices/

Newsflash, Scholastic...

YOU DID PROMOTE the 9-11 miniseries. YOU distributed PROPAGANDA to schools throughout the country.

Scholastic will be FOREVER branded historically as the purveyors of propaganda.

3. Whew, at least they realize what a mistake this is
Even if there were no gross errors in the series, it's best for them to stay away from controversial hot potatoes like this.

It's good to see they maintain their integrity.

8. So Scholastic is still recommending the material
"At the same
time, we believe that developing critical thinking and media literacy
skills is crucial for students in today's society in order to participate
fully in our democracy and that a program such as 'The Path to 9/11'
provides a very 'teachable moment' for developing these skills at the high
school level.

What a crock.

Scholastic isn't backing out. They're simply taking their logo off the "new" educational materials and disavowing involvement in the development of the movie. Oh, and they won't promote the movie. That is all they are doing. BFD.

9. Oh, the wingnuts are going to go ballistic!
Wonder if the FRetards have heard. It was the Scholastic tie-in that they loved because for once someone with an above-kindergarten education seemed to be taking their side. Suck on this, freeper scum.

12. Back away all together Scholastic
You didn't create the material. Why are you supporting it at all with this material? It's hot and it's burning you. Any smart company would drop it and back away ... fast.

Why provide any support materials at all?

13. But, by withdrawing the materials, do they mean that what's already...
...been distributed will no longer be available for use? The reason I ask is because these kinds of materials, for use with another entity's copyrighted property, are usually time-limited. Teachers have until a certain date to use them in the classroom.

14. No they are still recommending the material
just disclaiming their relationship to ABC's film.

Teachers are free to use the material.

15. They're not backing away from anything.
They're just changing the discussion questions. They are still promoting the film for kids to see as a school assignment!

CYA is all they're doing.
