ABC Issues Response to Complaints!!!
Dear Acmejack,
I have received several emails concerning the dramatization, "The Path to 9/11" and our network, ABC, has issued the following response for your review and consideration:

Statement from an ABC Spokesperson
The Path to 9/11 is a dramatization, not a documentary, drawn from a variety of sources, including the 9/11 commission report, other published materials and from personal interviews. The events that lead to 9/11 originally sparked great debate, so its not surprising that a movie surrounding those events has revived the debate. The attacks were a pivotal moment in our history that should never be forgotten and its fitting that the discussion continues.

The following disclaimer will air throughout the movie:
The following movie is a dramatization that is drawn from a variety of sources including the 9/11 Commission Report and other published materials, and from personal interviews. The movie is not a documentary. For dramatic and narrative purposes, the movie contains fictionalized scenes, composite and representative characters and dialogue, as well as time compression."

Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns.

Respectfully,

Patti C. Smith
President and General Manager
KVUE-TV

110. ABC is advertising "uninterrupted viewing" which I suppose means
no commercials. Call it a boycott or an unwillingness to patronize stupidity, I'm putting ABC on parent guard, which means it just won't appear on my TV anymore, and I won't be doing business with many of their advertisers.

Basically I said I hope you don't air this garbage, because I would like for my kids to see Disney World. However, if you do, they'll never visit a Disney theme park on my dime, my TV will never be on ABC and my car will never go to a theater to see a Disney movie.

I also said there are millions of parents like me. Think about it.

people are still going to believe it, regardless.

You can compare it to the Da Vinci Code. It's fiction, sure, based with some known facts. But it's still fiction. How many people freakin' believe that the Da Vinci Code is "real"? Enough for some one to write another book "debunking" it.

9. They Don't Care About Truth.
They only care about Ratings and $$$$$$$$.

Given the MORON factor in this country, I'm sure they realize that no matter what the outcry, there will be plenty of MORONS who will watch this religiously, and believe it as FACT, not fiction.

There's strength in numbers. Unfortunately, there are enough MORONS in the U.S. to make it viable programming.

Of course, I won't watch it. But I'm irrelevant since I seldom watch the GARBAGE passing as MSM TV these days.

12. You are entitled to a dramatization
But not to your own set of facts, ABC. When you use real people as the backing for fictional events, you have an obligation to get it right. And when those real people, many of whom are still alive, object to the depiction of events concerning them that never happened, you have an obligation to get it right.

Or is "oh, it's just a dramatization" now license for libel? ABC is on prior notice that they're about to broadcast falsehoods; will they have a "we didn't know" defense should someone bring suit?

117. Get a load of how they fucked Clinton, Albright and Berger, too
http://americablog.blogspot.com/2006/09/disneyabc-flat-out-refused-to-provide.html

Disney/ABC flat-out REFUSED to provide Pres. Clinton, Madeleine Albright and Sandy Berger copies of its 9/11 "docudrama", tho GOP bloggers got copies
by John in DC - 9/06/2006 07:08:00 PM

Interesting behavior for a company that has a lot of business before Congress - a Congress that is expected to turn Democrat (at least in one house, maybe both) in about 8 weeks.

Republican bloggers, Disney/ABC is happy to give them complementary advance copies of its error-riddled TV show about September 11. But when the actual people slandered in the tv show ask to see advance copies, Disney/ABC says no.

I have a law degree. And you enter very interesting legal territory when someone expresses concern about the veracity of your TV show and you refuse to provide them with a copy in advance, yet provide copies to others. Okay, I'm being too polite. Albright wrote Disney/ABC and told them, flat-out, that the malfeasance they attribute to her is absolutely untrue. Disney/ABC has refused to even respond to her. (Sandy Berger wrote Disney/ABC as well.)

AGAIN, as I said in another thread, keep contacting ABC, and keep bitching at them...

18. Patti Smith is a typical corporate PR drone
Since 1990, Smith has served as general manager of KVEO-TV (NBC) in Brownsville, Texas. From 1989 until 1990, Smith served as operations manager, news director and local-regional sales manager at KGBT-TV (CBS) in Harlingen, Texas. She held the positions of promotions director and local-regional
account executive at KBVO-TV (UPN) in Austin from 1986 until 1989. From 1983 until 1986, Smith worked in new business development at Austin CableVision. Smith began her career in 1975 at KTBC-TV (FOX) in Austin, where she served as director of broadcast facilities until she became general manager of Austin Productions in 1981. A graduate of the University of Texas, Smith holds a bachelor of science degree in communications.

Just where did I say it was innately "good" or "bad"? It's not as I said something such as "Well, Josef Goebbels..." Nope, not at all.
Judging from your near-hysterical defense of the profession, I would wager that I have touched a nerve with someone who is still in the business. To each their own.

And I'm sorry, but the DU response towards these average people working at Disney, and in PR in particular, is kind of pathetic.

Why is it so hard to understand that a lot of these people might actually be Dems? And you are calling and yelling at them for decisions their boss makes? You can call, make a point, and still remain human to those people. Otherwise you piss off people that might actually be able to impact the overall decision and you come out looking like the bad guy. Is it so wrong that I want to take a human approach? Again, if you want to send a vitriolic message, it will be dismissed. Make a rational point and respect who you are talking to and you will get much further.

And many include information from published information, witnesses and other sources. Many contain recreations and representative characters and dialogue. What they DO NOT contain are easily provable LIES already refuted by an eyewitness to one of their scenes. This is not a documentary,as they now admit and neither is it a "dramatization"-dramatization is a technique of enhancing ones understanding of and appreciation for the facts of a historic event-call your piece what it is, ABC, a propaganda film by a republican willing to lie to shift blame from the current regime...

These propagandists seem to think that most people are stupid enough to turn on the basis of the changing of a single word, morphing "documentary" into "dramatization".

..excellent work acmejack.., and it is a start, but it seems as if they don't really care about the facts, they are about profits and appeasement (per randi's show yesterday)..

as well as boycotting advertisers and our emails to the network and affiliates, it seems as though a bigger hammer is needed... probably not in time to prevent the airing of this mockudrama, but to certainly make the "deciders" and their boards of directors to sit up and take notice...

the fundies are always complaining to the FCC, so is there a basis for a complaint here? does anyone here know?

What is the motivation? Right next to the Nov primaries not to mention a failing war with little support (do you hear war drums beating again?)

Why not wait 10, 15 yrs before they start exploiting tragedy?

It just has Republican Election conspiracy written all over it!!! SEE the people TRUST us to run the country and keep it safe. Although it happened in their watch, although we are now the most hated country in the world and even more vulnerable then before.

A Despicable, Irresponsible Fraud

(DNC Executive Director, Tom McMahon, sent the following email to Democrats across the country today.)
Dear Fellow Democrat,

Does a major national broadcast network want to stain itself by presenting an irresponsible, slanderous, fraudulent, "docu-drama" to the American public?

Not if you and I have the last word -- but either way, we're about to find out.

The ABC television network -- a cog in the Walt Disney empire -- unleashed a promotional blitz in the last week for a new "docudrama" called "The Path to 9/11". ABC has thrown its corporate might behind the two-night production, and bills it as a public service: a TV event, to quote the ABC tagline, "based on the 9/11 Commission Report".

Keeping the pressure on!

You have taken a step in the right direction regarding the disclaimer for "Path to 9/11". Now, take the next step by pulling it from the schedule on the basis that it still portrays untruths about the level of responsibility of President Clinton with regard to the attacks that day. Bill Clinton took steps that were killed by the Republican Congress, dismissed as "totalitarian". Count the totalitarian measures implemented by the current administration since that day. I tried but most are secret.

Go back and tell them it's not good enough!

As both a parent and someone who grew up reading Scholastic magazine I am disappointed that Scholastic has joined ABC TV in its attempt to re-write history through its docu-drama, "Path to 9/11."

I'm angry that U.S. school children will be taught using material gathered by an ultra right-wing conservative screenwriter - Cyrus Nowrasteh - who, as an avowed conservative has spoken on a panel titled "How conservatives Can Lead Hollywood's Next Paradigm Shift."

It seems the fundamentalist, neocon, imperialistic Right's mission is accomplished now that its lies and propaganda are allowed to be openly taught in our public schools.

Now it is using the pretense that it is nevertheless based on "sources" that are supposed to make this Republican Crapfest tolerable or even ethical? Disney/ABC must recognize that a partisan hackpiece about a traumatic national event, that has subsequently been used by Republican parasites to advance their political agenda is not acceptable. It's an attack with a pointed stick on the American people. Why not just run a mini-series on the women in Ken Mehlman's life and call it a look at the life of an important politician?

None of their shows or advertizers are acceptable anymore. We will continue to let them know.

Did it come from the 911 report, personal interviews, "other published material" or did Cyrus just make it up for the sake of revisionist history?

The producer should back up his claims before he's allowed to slander the Clinton administration with a "fictionalized scene for dramatic purposes".

Thousands die in this nation every year due to Corporate and Neo-Conzi policies. Nobody bats an eye. MORONS.

Just to make the present situation even more annoying, check out the "A Better Community" section of the ABC homepage.
http://abc.go.com/abettercommunity/index.html

Under it's 'Spotlight' section is this:
SPOTLIGHT

It's been five years since the tragic events of September 11th changed our world and daily living forever. The tragedy of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon will forever resonate in the minds of all of us. And, it's with hope and perseverance, that we remember and honor those who were so violently taken, as well as those individuals who have given so compassionately to the ongoing recovery. This fifth anniversary reminds us of our constant need to come together as citizens and as human beings to rebuild and create A Better Community.

There are many organizations that seek to capture the strength and pride of this country while remembering the importance of that day:

Since Wes Clark, Sandy Berger and Madeline Albright say they never took part in any such discussion and actions as portrayed in the video, why did they add that. And since I heard those three are thinking of sueing for libel ABC better watch out, maybe Disney won't own it for long. I know one thing if they portray the democrats in a negative way that did not happen we ought to get an ACLU lawyer and add our name. Then make the courts bring one lawsuit for slander and libel after the other right up to election. I wouldn't doubt one bit that roves dirty filthy hand and brain is not in this.

Bush is too stupid to tie his own shoes let alone plan 9/11. I hope they also show Bush saying he saw the first plane hit that morning. That is a lie unless he saw it from his limo. It's a fucking six hour GOP ad...and I hope Albright and Burger sue: http://americablog.blogspot.com/2006/09/disneyabc-flat-out-refused-to-provide.html

By doing this, Disney/ABC is making it impossible for Clinton, Albright or Berger to correct any errors (read: defamation) in the show before it airs. That's negligent on the part of Disney/ABC, and it certainly suggests malice as well - i.e., the opposite of a good faith effort to get the story right, or in this case, an affirmative desire to keep the story wrong.

I hope Clinton, Albright and Berger sue the hell out of Disney/ABC when this show airs.

122. Here is my letter to our local ABC affiliate:
I am writing to respectfully request that KXTV refrain from presenting “The Path to 911” on September 10 and 11. The reasons for my request are as follows:

1. In view of the 3,000 who died on Sept. 11, 2001, it is undignified and exploitive to present an entertainment program to capitalize on the tragedy. How would you feel about this movie if one of your family members had been a victim of the attack?

2. This movie has been put forward as a “docu-drama”, when in fact it presents an inaccurate and biased view of what happened. The facts of the movie are not drawn from the 911 Commission Report, as advertising materials have claimed. Several members of the Clinton Administration have come forward and indicated that scenes in the movie never happened or were inaccurate. The movie presents the Clinton Administration as having a weak stance on terrorism, while the Bush Administration are portrayed as strong and resolute in their treatment of terrorism.

3. This is a propaganda piece planned by the Administration through Disney/ABC, to be presented shortly before November midterm elections. No doubt they hope it will rally Republican voters and prevent the Democrats from taking back Congress. It is inappropriate for a media outlet such as KXTV, who pride yourselves in objective and factual news reporting and tasteful entertainment programming to take part in this partisan exercise, and basically present a four-hour commercial for the Bush Administration on the anniversary of our greatest national tragedy.

This is wrong. Thank you for taking the “high road” and refraining from the network presentation of “The Path to 911.”

--Wanet

The use of the term dramatization is nothing more a license to bend, stretch, or distort actual events to feed a partisan agenda. So if the actual facts of events leading up to 9/11 don't create the proper impression, just go ahead and concoct whatever ideology-based revisionism is required to get the job done. This will (hopefully) dupe the viewing public to accept your version of what you wished was true but is in fact NOT true. Mission Accomplished!

160. I sent ABC an e mail and added my thoughts
I used the form e mail and added some additional comments:

Why was the film not screened before more liberal audiences and bloggers such as Markos Moulitsas?

snip

Many Americans will take this one sided docudrama to be the truth of what happened on 9/11/01. If you are going to show this very biased movie, then when can I expect to see Loose Change on ABC?

Republicans, Democrats, Greens and even socialists DIED on 9/11/01. Their memory deserves more than a right-wing pro Bush interpretation of events.

I'm now very happy ABC has pulled out of their agreement with Mel Gibson to do a Holocaust miniseries, if this miniseries is any indication of how ABC views history I'm afraid the powers that be would allow Ernst Zundel to do the script!

"For dramatic and narrative purposes, the movie contains fictionalized scenes ..."

In addition to "dramatic and narrative purposes" it should add "political purposes".

One doesn't put stuff in a movie that puts unfair blame on a President of the United States, while letting the real culprit(s) of scott free for "dramatic and narrative purposes".

That is pure bullshit :grr:

Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 10:25 PM by what now toons
History should not be rewritten to please the political party that holds power, this is the first step towards an Orwellian world. I am very disappointed that the Disney Company, a unique American company would give up it's truly American values to support a partisan lie. The effect on the Disney brand could be devastating. As a stock holder I implore you to reconsider airing this partisan lie.
This was my letter to ABC, We really don't need a list of advertisers ( although they should be pressured with boycots as well) when we have the big daddy of them all. The Disney Brand. Whatever ABC does, so does Disney.

The drama and fiction all build a partisan political movie that is not, just, not the truth, it is the known opposite of the truth.

And its release was denied to high profile persons it thusly wrongfully accused. Despite being sent to high and low profile persons who could desire its partisan political untruths.

These ABC actions are egregious to the point of being un-american. Dividing Americans one against another for the sake of dramatizing events opposite of known truth. I want to relay a jaw-dropped SHAME on you and everyone who failed to realize this.

The Path to 9/11 is a dramatization, not a documentary,

To the true-believers "dramatization" means dramatic retelling of factual events.

drawn from a variety of sources, including the 9/11 commission report, other published materials and from personal interviews.

As if there is one fact in the 9/11 Commission Report. :eyes:

The following disclaimer will air throughout the movie:
The following movie is a dramatization that is drawn from a variety of sources including the 9/11 Commission Report and other published materials, and from personal interviews. The movie is not a documentary. For dramatic and narrative purposes, the movie contains fictionalized scenes, composite and representative characters and dialogue, as well as time compression."

And the Kool-aid drinkers are going to read, "This is a documentary, but we fictionalized a few scenes to make it more dramatic".

Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns.

"Thank you for letting me brush you off. If you had wanted real action perhaps you should have claimed to be a persecuted Christian. " :sarcasm:

Not good enough by far.

It leaves the viewer unaware of which scenes are based on the 9/11 Commission Report and which ones are pure fiction. Given that is contains "fictionalized scenes" what value does it have in the classroom? Hint, none. It is yellow journalism of the worst kind.

Boycott the sponsors of this movie.

Your "fictional dramatization" "The Path To 9/11" is another example of why I believe that ABC stands for Anything But Class. A dramatization should at least be based on real events-not the fantasies of a RW hack writer. The only real thing about this is the events on 9/11-everything else is total fiction. I will not watch this garbage nor will I purchase anything from any adverisers that sponsor it and I will urge everyone I know to do the same.

216. ABC will never take this off air. Our side needs its own 9/11 documentary
I'm afraid no matter how many emails they get ... ABC has promoted this to the skies, and they're not gonna not run it.

The best we're probably gonna get is a disclaimer, which should be STRONGLY WORDED, and broadcast every 15 minutes. It should be strongly labeled "a fictionalized account."

Then, someone should make a REAL documentary about "the path to 9/11," with RICHARD BEN-VENISTE, BOB KERREY, et al (Dems. from 9/11 commission) as consultants. Maybe Richard Clarke, too.

AND, someone should do a documentary about PNAC, and run it the same week.

I suggest someone make a "docudrama" to post on youtube.com of Disney and ABC executives having sex with sheep. Then, we can add a disclaimer that it is not actually supposed to include facts, that it is dramatized.

This incident is not surprising. The same Disney execs killed the the deal that their subsidiary, Miramax, had to distribute Fahrenheit 9-11 in the theaters in mid-2004.

Q. What happens to little boys and girls who are selfish and mean?

A. They are pitied by more altruistic people.

B. They could be targets of revenge by those they've injured.

C. They grow up to be sheep-fucking corporate executives.

223. The answer is this:
The only thing that is fair is this:

On every scene that is in any way fictitious, they should add (at the bottom of the screen) a disclaimer

Disclaimer: this didn't really happen
Disclaimer: this is an amalgam of things, and didn't happen exactly this way.

On every scene that diverges from the 9/11 commission report. EVERY SCENE. (I figure we will never know what really happened, but at least the commission report is something they can refer to with something close to impartiality).

Either that or boycott every advertiser that advertises on any ABC program (or their affiliates). I mean every program. Including "Lost", "Boston Legal" etc.
