Senate votes to continue use of cluster bombs
Senate votes to continue use of cluster bombs

Brian Beutler
Published: Wednesday September 6, 2006

An amendment to the 2007 defense appropriations bill that would have prevented military funding from paying for cluster munitions failed on the floor of the Senate by a vote of 30-70, RAW STORY has learned.

Prior to the vote, Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) presented the amendment along with photographs of Iraqi children who have been maimed by cluster munitions that were not tripped by their intended targets.

Prior to the vote on the measure, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) released a statement about cluster munitions and land mines, which defined a cluster munition as, "a large bomb, rocket or artillery shell that contains hundreds of small submunitions, or individual bomblets."

"In some cases," Leahy explained, "up to 40 percent of the bomblets fail to explode and therefore pose a significant danger to civilians long after conflict has ended. Cluster bombs also expose U.S. military forces to grave danger as they advance in combat through areas containing thousands of unexploded bomblet.

3. Show them some high fructose corn syrup fed Americans
killed by cluster bombs.

Wait, that's right; the empire doesn't kill us, it just uses us for work and to buy crap.

4. It may take days to get details on how they voted.

But that list will be posted here. I hope everyone takes some time to call those who voted against it, no matter what party they're in.

This is an outrage.

If anyone else would like to check on the status, it's S.AMDT.4882 for HR 5631.

17. I am so fucking sick of Bill Nelson and there isn't a damn...
thing I can do about it. He is the ONLY Democratic representing my interests from my town council all the way up to the President. How overwhelmingly depressing is that?

12. More "bi-partisan" support for murder.
The "defense" industry and the Pentagon are pleased with another show of "patriotism" that will kill and maim thousands.

Closer to the election, I'll write a "10 Reasons Not to Reelect Lieberman" LTTE, and this goes on the list.
