Strike shuts down Detroit schools
DETROIT -- With attendance limited by an eight-day teacher strike and no immediate help from the courts, Detroit Public Schools announced they will be closed to students today and remain shut until further notice.

End may not be near

District officials say they held school Tuesday in hopes that the strike would be short-lived. Borman's delay Tuesday made that less likely. The district had asked Borman on Tuesday again to order teachers back to class, but she delayed her decision until a hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday. District lawyers argued that state law bars strikes by public employees and requires the court to order them back to work through an injunction.

"The message is crystal clear," said district attorney Jerome Watson. "Strikes by public employees in Michigan are illegal."
