Is There a Woman Newsperson Out There Who Could Do A
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 08:34 AM by leftyladyfrommo
nightly News show?

I got to wondering and I think there are several who would be just fine. I've seen Diane Sawyer do a really good job.

And I really like Christiane Amanpour (sp) but she is a really good hard scrabble reporter - I don't think she would be interested in the fluff part of the news.

4. She really improved WWiR, but...

it's kind of tanked lately.

Believe it or not, I think Meredith Viera would have been a better choice, and I HATE "The View." But she has a maturity/solemnity/intelligence about her that Couric lacks.

Christianne Amanpour, of course, is tops - smart, GREAT voice. But I don't think she'd do it either. A bit too feral for the job.

It's interesting how the BBC and CBS generate terrific news women, but left to the free market, our networks do not. Hillary Brown, Barbara From etc. were terrific on CBC.

Okay, purely shallow reasons, but I'd watch her just about any time.

She already does a daily news show.

It's 'fluff-free', however.

on edit:

I guess if I think about it, she has had musical acts (political ones) on her show from time to time -- does that count as fluff?

7. There is also Katrina Vanden Heuvel and Laura Flanders,
both hard nosed journalists alongside Christiane Amanpour, who also meet the TV standard of being attractive enough for prime time.

8. What is it you're looking for?
When you say "the fluffl part of the news," my question is, if it's fluff, why do you call it news? And why should it be on the news? And why a woman, specifically, to broadcast the fluff part of the news? I don't understand.

11. She smiles at a lot of the wrong times. But, yes, she's pretty good.
She just has to stop smiling when delivering grim news.

10. Gloria Campos from Channel 8 in Dallas
Very professional--not eye candy--anchor.
She initially worked in the Rio Grande Valley before coming to Dallas.
I honestly don't know her political leanings--but that is just the thing.
I shouldn't.

12. You can tell I don't have cable - I don't know who any of
these women are.

I like Meredith, too. She comes across as intelligent and decent.

I would really like to see a good newswoman make the grade. But I don't think Couric is going to make it. Not if the show contines like it did last nite.
