Put the pressure on ABC, please contact Disney...!
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 11:59 PM by bliss_eternal
Disney owns ABC and many of their affiliates. Disney has already shown that they are vulnerable to poor publicity and we should utilize that chink in their armour to let them know the following:

1. If they must air the show, its upcoming television mini-series The Path to 9/11 then it needs to be advertised as a fictional account and not a docu-drama. Advertising it as a docu-drama suggests there is some truth in the show.

2. If they are unwilling to advertise the show as fiction, it should be pulled. If they are unwilling to pull the show, they will be boycotted.

Remember, Disney are the ones that recently pulled the plug on the Mel Gibson Apolycaptico (or whatever it's called) not long after his drunk driving incident comments began to reach the public.

Disney is also the company that sought to distance itself from Michael Moore's film Farenheit 9/11, and refused to distribute it--not wanting to be attached to any negative views of bushco.

So given that this is the way Disney is--let's exploit it. Get on the phone tomorrow and call their affiliates in your cities and let them know you plan to boycott them. You can also e-mail Disney.

When seekin contact information for Disney, ABC is included with their links--so apparently contacting ABC is a way to contact Disney, particularly when it comes to what is going to air on ABC.

14. Boycott ABC, Wendy's, Red Lobster.
If Bush had not told the Taliban "Either accept our carpet of gold or we cover you with a carpet of bombs" 9-11 would not have happened. 9-11 appeared about oil and gas pipelines that the Bush administration wanted to have go through Afghanistan and threatened the invasion of Afghanistan if the Taliban would not go along. The Taliban then struck us first.

Tell Wendy's and Red Lobster to get ABC to pull the GOPaganda piece Path to 9-11 or we never set foot in their restaurants ever again and we don't watch any ABC tv broadcasts ever again as well. ABC can hide the advertisers but we can see that Wendy's and Red Lobster advertise on ABC programming nationally most nights a week and they also give money exclusively to the GOP according to opensecrets.org

Slaughter Calls for ABC to Come Clean on New 9-11 Docudrama
Divisive and Politicized Accounts of September 11th Attacks and National Security Issues Endanger Nation

Washington, DC - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, today called for ABC to make clear to viewers that its upcoming television mini-series The Path to 9/11 is not a documentary account of the events and political decisions that preceded the terrorist attacks of that day.

"ABC has a responsibility to make clear that this film is not a documentary, and does not represent an official account of the facts surrounding the September 11th attacks," Rep. Slaughter said. "Disclaimers noting that The Path to 9/11 is a docudrama should be shown throughout its airing. We have yet to establish the impartiality and accuracy of the people behind this film and the claims it advances, and the American people need to know that."

9. I wonder what's going on with Disney in Florida.
ABC --> Disney --> Disneyworld --> Florida --> Jeb Bush

I wonder if they're being pressured at all.
Land issues? Tax issues? Employment issues? Etc?

Did you hear or see this?

Excerpt:
Disney Says No to "Fahrenheit 9/11"
Posted on May 5, 2004 11:29 PM under: World News & Politics

The Walt Disney Company has blocked distribution of Michael Moore's new film "Fahrenheit 9/11" simply because it is critical of the U.S. President George W. Bush.

The film -- which links Bush with powerful Saudi families, including that of Osama bin Laden -- is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival in France later this month.

The reason?
According to today's edition of The New York Times, it might 'endanger' millions of dollars of tax breaks Disney receives from the state of Florida because the film will 'anger' the governor of Florida, Jeb Bush.

http://www.subzeroblue.com/archives/2004/05/disney_says_no_to_fa.html

I didn't see the article they speak of in the New York Times at that time, I'm sure it could still be accessed though just to check out the information. If this is true, then they are definitely looking out for their bottom line as opposed to not wanting to seem partisan as they stated was the case when they wouldn't support M. Moore's film. :eyes:

11. Figures. With rethugs, it's always a matter of following the money.
Remember that mild little ad by MoveOn called "Child's Pay"?
It was claimed to be too controversial for the air waves.
CBS said that the ad violated the network's policy against accepting advocacy advertising.

But when it comes to right-wing propaganda, networks have no qualms about broadcasting two non-stop hours of lies.

15. Question on the docu-drama.
I thought "docu-drama" was code word for fictional account? So, you DO want them to claim it's a docu-drama.

You can blame Capote for this grey area. When he wrote, "In Cold Blood," he made the grey area between fiction and non-fiction even greyer.

16. Docudrama is the correct term for this program.
The definition of docudrama is "a fictionalized drama based primarily on actual events."

17. Thanks, Amy.
I think there's confusion with the semantics, and it is confusing matters even more. The general definition on the internet is this: "A television or movie dramatization of events based on fact."

Your definition is more accurate, When you drop the word, "fictionalized" from the definition, it suggests something entirely different.

Fiction and Non-fiction are operative words. In the ABC Clinton bashing movie, it's obvious that it's fiction because the facts don't hold up. But in another work that was also dramatized, the results were different. Capote, "In Cold Blood," took dramatic license by adding conversations that could never be validated, but it's still considered non-fiction.

So, I suggest that we not use docu-drama to describe the Clinton bashing movie, unless you also add the word, "ficitonalized."

19. Too right -- docudrama sounds too close to documentary.
For those not familiar with its true definition -- of which FICTIONALIZED is arguably the most important part -- it can be confusing. And I think this is exactly what its creators and ABC intended to happen.

I wish there was some way to point this out to everyone else, because it seems to be working.

18. Won't work any better than the Baptist boycott.
Remember that? THe Southern Baptists were going to shut down Disney by boycotting it, for the company's support of medical benefits for gay partners? Remember how well it worked?

That's right. It didn't.

Doing this may give your ego a little massage, make you think you're really doing something, but you're fooling yourself. Do something real. Push for the Democratic Party to reform media and antitrust laws. Oh, that's not a romantic issue and it won't give you points with your intellectual snob buddies, but it might just help save the country.
