NEW YORK - Nearly seven out of ten World Trade Center responders suffered lung problems during or after their work at ground zero, and high rates of lung abnormalities’ continued years after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to a new health study.

Doctors at Mount Sinai Medical Center, which conducted the study, said Tuesday that the results conclusively prove that work at ground zero made many people sick, and that some will suffer the effects for the rest of their lives.

There should no longer be any doubt about the health effects of the World Trade Center. Our patients are sick,’ said Dr. Robin Herbert, co-director of the group that conducted the study of long-term effects from exposure to the toxic gray dust at ground zero.

In the case of a patient who is still sick nearly five years after the attacks, Herbert said, I have to typically deem it to be a chronic and likely lifelong disease.’
