Green Roofing for the masses - from Toyota, naturally(sorry, dupe)
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 02:19 PM by greenman3610

Toyota Roof Garden (subsidiary of the car company) is now taking orders for its modular grass tiles. The idea is that companies can reduce the urban heat island effect, thus cooling our great cities. TM9 roofing tiles also provide excellent thermal insulation.

Individual mats are twenty inches square, and about two inches thick. The mats are planted with a special brand of Korean velvet grass - it only needs to be cut once per year. The mats are irrigation system-ready; water can flow through tubes to channels in the mats, providing moisture to roots.

The price? Just $43 per square yard.

1. I really don't like getting on my roof
I sure as hell wouldn't want to get on my roof, haul up a lawnmower, and cut the grass up there.

2. My roof would look like straw here in Colorado
But I heard about an eco friendly roofing that looks like cedar shakes but is made from a recycled plastic.

5. Think roof decks in NYC
They are generally maintained as public property of the apartment owners (at least the one on my mom's building is). It is full of plants, outdoor tables etc. And it's flat, so I guess mowing it wouldn't be that hard.

Sounds like an interesting idea - I may e-mail her to bring it up at the next association meeting.
