BOYCOTT ABC-DISNEY IF THEY AIR "PATH TO 9-11"
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 01:51 PM by Dems Will Win

We need to organize a boycott of ABC-Disney for letting a right-wing nut write the script for the 9-11 movie and blame it on Clinton. Now Clarke says they made stuff up.

This means a boycott of all ABC shows, all Disney goods, Disney theme parks, dump all Disney Stock, even sell all Mutual Funds with Disney Stock in them. We will also compile a list of all advertisers of this 9-11 movie and boycott them FOREVER. Then go crazy on the Internets explaining how false this movie is and how everyone who is sick and tired of being lied to should go to their window, open it and yell "I'm Mad as Hell, And I'm Not Going To Take It Anymore!"

If they can knock the Reagan movie off the air (perhaps with the same reason of having inaccuracies), then we are going to boycott the SHIT out of Disney. Can somebody here make a Web site, so the blogs and alternative media can start advertising it.

This will be the first Progressive boycott of a major corporation since the Internets and the blogs started taking over the world, so it ain't going to be pretty for Disney.

If they thought the Grape Boycott of the Sixties was bad for business, they had better be prepared to tell stockholders exactly why they shot their profits in the foot this way.

You can't not report the truth and then put out falsehoods on the most significant event of our time without suffering the consequences.

I will be contacting very significant organizers to set this up this week.

It pisses me off, because Clinton and Clarke were never informed by the neo-con cabal running the DIA that Able Danger had found Atta and the Gang and were told to put yellow stickypads over their photos on the chart. The neo-con generals hid the fact that Mohammed Atta and al-Queda were in the US, and they used "The Wall" memo as a lame excuse--saying that Atta had to be considered a "US Person". The actual truth is a joke.

Here is the thread on Clarke on the movie saying "it never happened":

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2051748

Please post your ideas on how we can make this happen--and don't forget to recommend this thread. I hope the threat of a boycott makes them pull it AND apologize, and the boycott can then stop.

4 Things you can do right away:

1. Go to http://thinkprogress.org/tellabc and tell ABC you are joining the BOYCOTT.
2. DUMP YOUR DISNEY STOCK TODAY.
3. SEND OUT THIS THREAD AS AN E-MAIL TO YOUR ENTIRE LIST!
4. Please Recommend.

Here is an e-mail template to send:

Robert A. Iger
President and CEO, The Walt Disney Company

Dear Mr. Iger:

It has come to my attention that ABC plans to air a two-part mini-series called "The Path to 9/11" on September 10 and September 11. Accounts of advance screenings indicate that this program places primary responsibility for the attacks of 9/11 on the Clinton administration while whitewashing the failures of the Bush administration. This assertion is not supported by the 9/11 Commission Report upon which the program is purportedly based. This partisan misrepresentation of history is not surprising given that the movie was written by Cyrus Nowrasteh, an avowed conservative.

It is wrong for ABC to play politics with the facts of 9/11 by providing a national platform to present his distorted view of history. I am unwilling to whitewash the truth. The events that led to 9/11 are important topics for discussion and debate. But it's a debate that must be conducted honestly.

SO WE HAVE NOW STARTED A BOYCOTT OF ALL ABC-DISNEY PRODUCTS AND STOCK OWNERSHIP WHICH WILL CEASE ONLY IF "PATH TO 9-11" IS PULLED AND AN APOLOGY ISSUED IMMEDIATELY. WE ALSO DEMAND AN ACTUAL INVESTIGATIVE REPORT 1-HOUR SPECIAL WITH RICHARD CLARKE ON WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. IF THESE CONDITIONS ARE NOT MET, THE POWER OF THE BLOGOSPHERE WILL PRODUCE AN ENORMOUS BOYCOTT MOVEMENT.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
(Name)

7. Not the first boycott since the Internet and blogs "took over the world"
"This will be the first major boycott of a major corporation since the Internet and the blogs took over the world, so it ain't going to be pretty for Disney."

Well, unless the Internet and blogs just took over the world in the past couple of months, that simply isn't so. There was the RW attempt to boycott Ford that was launched just last year and, as far as I know, is still ongoing. And there was the long RW boycott of Disney which ended last year with the RW declaring victory (but in fact everyone knew that they were just conceding defeat).

I can't imagine that this one will be any more successful. Although it will generate publicity ABC, for which they will be most grateful.

11. K&R. I already sent my email.
I'm behind this 100%. If you or anyone else you know puts together this boycott list, I can guarantee that I and my family will stand with you. If they take part in this propaganda, Disney will never get another penny from me for as long as I draw breath.

Before reading this thread, I had already sent the following email to Mr. Iger:

----- email begins -----

Dear Mr. Iger:

I am emailing you regarding "The Path to 9/11," the nature of this work, and how it will impact upon my life.

I am a 37 year old father of 4 children, and a proud American. My family and I are currently planning our first vacation to Disney World in Florida for next summer. My wife and I enjoy many ABC programs. My children love many of the wonderful Disney movies, and my daughters especially want us to buy every item with the Disney Princess art on them.

I vow to you that if this horrible, biased pack of lies is aired on the anniversary of the greatest single tragedy in my country's history that I will make certain that the Disney corporation and its subsidiaries will never see another penny from my family. No vacation, no ABC shows, no movies or merchandise. Period.

Should it air, I will make a point of finding out the name of every prime time sponsor of every ABC show and boycotting their services and products. I will also contact each of these sponsors and let them know exactly why they will never get my business again.

I am not a troublemaker, Mr. Iger. But this twisted, partisan lie is beyond my ability to look the other way. The tragedy of 9/11 should not be a political football, and I'll be damned if I will support any company that allows that to happen.

I would appreciate a response to this email.

Sincerely,
(my real name)

I do't go to Disney World (OK, I took my kids there over a decade ago). I don't own any stock in Disney, either directly or indirectly. I never watch ABC and wouldn't know an episode of "Lost" if I stumbled onto it.

But what I can sure as hell do is boycott the sponsors who advertise on ABC.

27. The part you added (threat of boycott) seems a little Dr. Evil-ish
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:44 PM by Harvey Korman
Maybe this would work better:

(After the paragraph that ends, "an avowed conservative.")

It is wrong for ABC to play politics with the facts of 9/11 by providing a national platform to present his distorted view of history. The events that led to 9/11 are important topics for discussion and debate. But it's a debate that must be conducted honestly. As such, ABC has an obligation to its viewers to provide a true investigative report probing the events of 9/11--not merely a biased dramatization. Counterterrorism experts such as Richard A. Clarke may be called upon to provide a more factual account of that day's events for such a program.

Should ABC fail to report the truth, a broad coalition of activists and concerned citizens is prepared to enforce a boycott against ABC and the entire Walt Disney Company, its properties, products and subsidiaries, including divestiture of any investments therein. I will join their efforts in protest of any further slanted and distasteful representation of a national tragedy. Let the message run forth: We will no longer tolerate fear-mongering and finger-pointing to inflate poll numbers and network ratings.

Please reconsider your course of action. Commemorate those we lost on 9/11 with responsibility and respect for the truth.

Sincerely,
(Name)

31. Sorry, kids. Boycotts don't work. Ask the Baptists.
Remember when the Southern Baptists boycotted Disney because the company provided benefits to gay partners? Remember how Disney income and stock suffered after that event?

NOT AT ALL.

Boycott if it gives you a little emotional goosing, but don't pretend it will do anything to "punish Disney" for this event. You'd do better to push for reinstatement of laws forbidding media monopolies like Disney, but I wouldn't expect that issue to seem as "sexy" to you guys.

36. Boycotts can and do work
if the underlying reason for the boycott is righteous. The baptists were boycotting them for not being bigots. The more attention it got the less affective it was.

But in this case we'd be exposing lies and Disney being a corporate shill for one of the major parties.

Truth is on our side.

39. Truth doesn't help a boycott work. Nothing will.
Ask Pilate about what truth is. For that matter, ask just about any philosophy teacher.

The basic mechanics of boycotts are this: they only affect the bottom line of a corporation by a small amount. If everyone on DU boycotted ABC...let's see, that'd be one tenth of one percent of their total viewership. It'd also be invisible to the public. Boycotts do nothing but help the egos of the people doing the boycotting.

Boycotts wouldn't have as much effect as a simple PR campaign - saying "ABC Lied About 9/11." If those same DU members posted signs in public, stickers on phone booths and in elevators, and in public gathering areas everywhere, THAT would get the message out and get people questioning their government.

Unfortunately, a progressive writer has to prove how smart and literate he is, so he'd put a ten page letter (single-spaced) on a telephone pole and expect passers-by to read it. Meanwhile Republicans have simple slogans that people are easily able to read and understand. In this case, too, it's still all about the ego of the would-be progressive pampleteer.

41. The purpose of the boycott
is to refocus attention on the actions of the entity being boycotted.

And though the truth may be slippery in the ideal, it can be quite damning to those being boycotted in the real world.

The Montgomery bus boycott is an example of a truly historic success of a boycott. And the first link relates the success of several smaller more recent boycotts.

And the point of a boycott is much more than to damage the bottom line. For a little primer on the subject of what makes a boycott's chances of success better I refer you to the third link.

And your point about a successful PR campaign is well taken. And no boycott that I know of met with much success without a few catchy slogans, or at least bumper sticker length references that get people asking the question "why?"

In the most general sense, I say hit them with everything we've got, including the power of boycotting.

The fewer the sponsors the easier an email/phone onslaught of protest will get their attention.
