Sweet little old racists

About 6 people in line with me picking up lunch at a small deli today. The television was on TXCN and they showed some video of the rally yesterday here in Dallas. When there it showed some of the Mexican flags being carried, what appeared to be the stereotypical "sweet little old lady" in line huffed and said, "Now they are just getting uppity." She glanced around at some of us and no one said a word.

3. The same was said of women no too long ago.
I think this pisses me off more than anything else:
those who condemn others after they, themselves, have overcome the
same prejudice.

4. Well, it's their own fault for getting uppity
If they just step in line and know their place, they'd be fine.

8. I wish that could have come up, but I had no desire to acknowledge
she was even there.

I would have loved to have invited her to my church, four priests, one Filipino, one Nigerian, one Hispanic and one white.

Not even you? You're preaching to the choir here. I hope you took the opportunity to take your anti-racism "to the streets", as it were, and express your dismay to the "sweet little old lady" in question.

10. Well, that's something, anyway.
Not exactly verbal, but it will do in a pinch.

Unless she's completely clueless, that is...

11. Hind sight and "arm chair quarterbacking" gave me the time to
think of a response.

Question to ask "lady": Do you vote?

If reply is "yes", respond: Thank an uppity woman.

If reply is "no", respond: Too bad all them uppity women fought so hard for a right you ignore.

13. actually, I think it would be funnier this way
"Do you vote?"

If "yes", then reply "Thank an uppity woman for your right to vote, then"

and

If "no", then reply "Thank Christ"

18. You say "uppity bitch" as if it's an insult.
I've been called that far too many times to think of it that way. I'm usually called that whenever I have an opinion different from whatever guy I'm talking to.

Naaaaaa, I'll leave the name calling to repubs and other like minded juveniles.

Though I might say, "Thank gawd you not one of those uppity women (who vote)"

These people are being EMBOLDENED by the current administration and they are CONSTANTLY pushing the envelope to see how much they can get away with.

In the past someone would have probably called her ass on the carpet (which is why she looked around).

These people need to be kept in check. They have the freedom to say what they want in public but so do we, and they shouldn't be allowed to get the last word.

And yes, you can do it respectfully, but dammit get the point across....our country can't continue to just swallow this crap....

I'll add on edit: I'm assuming sweet little grandma was a white lady. 'Smackdowns' are most effective and forceful when they come from OTHER WHITE PEOPLE!!!! They have almost no effect when coming from a person of color (in that case if a hispanic had called her to task, it would have 'validated' her position even more).

19. I hate to call you to task........
....But Bush wins EXACTLY BECAUSE you said nothing.

When little old "ladies" reveal themselves to be Biggots with Wrinkles they deserve no quarter.

It is just like when nurses at a home asked if someone's Grandpa is irritable from medication, the children said "No, He has always been an asshole ever since he was born."

Why do you discriminate by age? Or do you back down with everyone?

I am sorry to be acusatory, but praxis is important.

20. She looked around for agreement and got nothing from anyone

The guy next to her turned his back to her. She was not happy with the response. There was nothing to back down from, I was not and did not care to engage in a conversation with her.

23. I'd like to remind you and others of something...
you aren't gonna "win" this one no matter what.

A couple of months back, someone on DU posted their experience with a "little old lady" at a pharmacy; what the poster said in response to right-wing bs she spouted or some such. The "little old lady" ended up in tears. The responses to that story were along the lines of "good, she deserved it, the old (*&^%!" and "how could you make a little old lady cry? you monster, you".

It's a no win situation.

Sometimes a "deathly silence" will make someone more uncomfortable than an outright response to which they can respond. Each situation has its own tenor.
