Primaries in Florida today. Vote.
Or keep posting redundant judgemental threads about a dead celebrity, whichever's more important.

and Help Clint Curtis...

http://www.bradblog.com/

Why Is Tom Feeney Campaigning Against Clint Curtis Already? And Why Is He Doing It So NICELY?

Scott Maxwell of the Orlando Sentinel has an idea… Greg Sargent of TPM Cafe and Brad Friedman of The BRAD BLOG do too!

Democrats in Florida's 24th Congressional District are used to being surprised by Tom Feeney (left), but he's been surprising them again during the past few days. They have reported receiving fliers in the mail — and phone calls, too — which appear to be serious, even respectful — if brief — comparisons of the policy positions taken by the Republican incumbent, Feeney, and his potential Democratic challenger, Clint Curtis.

What's wrong with this picture?

3. I don't hold much hope for these primaries.... They are already
picked... and less scrutinized since they are primaries.

10. That's self-fulfilling.
The reason primaries seem already picked is that less than a third of registered voters generally bother to vote in them.

4. Yes.
'Huge amount at stake'
About 70 percent of voters don’t turn out for primaries, which decide many local races.

By ALISA ULFERTS, Times Staff Writer
Published September 5, 2006

Today is primary election day, when Democrats and Republicans nominate their leaders and independents select their picks in local races such as school board, judge and, in some cases, county commission.

After today, the leading gubernatorial candidates will be winnowed from four to two. One Republican chief financial officer candidate will survive to run in the general election, as will one Democratic candidate for attorney general.
>snip<

Today also is the day after Labor Day, and there's a decent chance of thunderstorms.

That has elections officials predicting weak turnout at the polls.

Secretary of State Sue Cobb informally polled county supervisors of elections last week, asking them for their predictions on voter turnout, based on early voting figures.

The range: 15 to 30 percent.

15 - 30% turnout shameful.

6. "...there's a decent chance of thunderstorms."
It's been pouring in Miami all morning. I just got back from voting and there is no line, no waiting. Hopefully things will pick-up when the rain stops.

11. No rain up here in Tallahassee.
Only a 30% chance of thunderstorms later on, and that's normal for this time of year.

First sound of distant thunder and I've got 2 dogs velcroed to my legs for the duration. Poor things just cannot handle it. (or fireworks)

21. Reminded me of "Because of Winn-Dixie"
cute movie. Haven't personally known any dogs that go completely bonkers like that, just the velcro kind. Feel so bad for them during the rainy season.

sorry for going totally off-topic.
and yes, I'm procrastinating.
pushing away from the keyboard now...

to do list:
get dressed
go vote
buy towels

I'm such a slug today.

22. Bad weather always makes me creaky.
You've got until 7PM, but don't wait until the last minute. My mom's working at the polls today. Mostly retirees. They had to be there at 6AM or so, and they aren't allowed to leave all day long (I think they get drinks brought to them, and they were supposed to pack a lunch), so they'll be itching to close everything down by 7.

16. You went out in the rain to vote?!
Oh My Goodness. (just kidding)

--

Thank you :patriot:

Amazing that a bit of rain would make it seem like too much of a chore to participate in our future, isn't it?

"Did you vote?"
"Nah, might get my shoes wet."

--

Our family schedules are all way off right now, so we didn't do our usual breakfast together, then go vote. We're straggling in as we can today. Our youngest son and I are going in a bit.

Pensacola is trying to ram a $40 million waterfront "Park" located on undeveloped bayfront land directly accross the street from the main sewage treatment plant (which overflows raw sewage into that land everytime it loses power or a hurricane hits). The city council literally disregarded the law about getting competitive bids (the only bid is the one by Quint Studer, a rich local guy who owns the Pensacola Pelicans - a basball team not even in the minors) so he can have a waterfront stadium paid for with bonds. Then in 60 years the city supposedly gets the land and buildings (assuming it's all not underwater by then). Oh, and he gets to pay $1/year rent on the property, which violates another city regulation tht taxes must be based on the lands value.

I'm all for developing the property with a PUBLIC park, after they move the sewage plant. But I'm against public financing of sports stadiums and the other associated businesses that will be built with it - even more so when this team isn't even a minor league team. The whole deal stinks, and it's mostly chamber of commerce types supporting it, so that also sends up a red flag.

DRAG YOUR LAZY ASSES TO THE POLLS! Heh, sorry.

Better yet, drag someone who wasn't going to vote today with you. Our strength is in our numbers today.

(I meant to put this at the end as a separate post, but I skipped the wrong step.)

25. Just got back from voting
After checking proper identification, I was givin the choice of whether I wanted a paper ballot or use the new electronic voting machine (Diebold). I said "I'll take the paper ballot, the electronic voting machines are not reliable". I thought the woman behind the table was going to fall off her chair, she said "They are so easy". I said "I prefer a paper trail for my vote".

There was a quiet steady stream of people, we are a very small town, but people take their vote very seriously.

26. I'm back, too.
Only one other person just finishing voting when we went. One walking in as we left.

A world of difference from November 2004, when lines were out to the street and down the sidewalk from morning to night.

I hope it picks up later.

Glad you got a choice - and took it. It feels so strange to give my vote to the 'now you see it, now you don't' touchscreen.
