2. in her heart, Babs has nothing but disdain for the underprivileged . . .
as she taught her son so well, they're underprivileged because they're lazy mo-fos who just don't work hard . . . it's their own fault, don'tcha know . . .

heartless bitch is an understatement . . .

3. Now wait a minute......As a Houstonian let me say this.......
I am NOT defending Barbara Bush except to say her comments on this one
are truly being taken out of context. What is NEVER shown concerning
this interview is that prior to this quote, she was discussing the
accomodations in the ASTRODOME (air conditioning, cots, blankets,
hot meals, toys for the kids, etc.) being more comfortable than
the filth, squalor, and neglect of the SUPERDOME, which is where an awful lot of Katrina survivors who ended up in the ASTRODOME came from.
She was not, in any way, inferring the Astrodome was better than living in their own homes or neighborhoods. I have lived in Houston all my life and am fiercely proud of the job our did in helping Katrina survivors. I am convinced that few other cities could have done what we did in such a short period of time.....as a matter of fact, NONE DID!
I, personnaly, paid for a weeks lodging for a family at an Econolodge
( a family I never met, and to this day, I don't know who they were, and
that's fine). I just went into the office and told the clerk to pick out a Lousianna family who had been there for a week (with small children)and I paid their bill up that point. I wasn't the only one,
people all across Houston did things like this. Babs is getting a
ridiculously bad rap on this from people who did not see the entire interview being broadcast live......

4. Baloney. "So many of these people were UNDERPRIVELEGED ANYWAY...."
You can't put that into convenient context.

5. Oh for heaven's sake, the discussion prior to that centered
around how being poor and underpriviledged had TRAPPED these people in New Orleans in the first place. How those with the ability ....got out!
No, she did not express herself well ....but she certainly didn't mean
what everyone is so anxious to believe what she meant.

8. Because she knew she put her foot in it........and as this thread
proves, no explanation, regardless of how benign, would have done any
good anyway.....This is as ridiculous as the Repubs making such a big deal out of Tereza Kerry saying Jamaican children should run around nude when volunteers were loading truckloads of donations in NY, after Jamaica was struck by that hurricane a few years ago....What she MEANT
was that food might be a bigger priorty at that particular moment than
clothing......and that was all out of context too!
