1. I liked the guy...kindy funny/informative....
But just how did he die???

I happen to think he wanted to hitch a ride on the ray...if true....it will be compelling evidence to avoid Rays for any similar attempts....

3. NPR this afternoon claimed that Irwin was popular in Australia like
nobody's business.

The man had his fans.

8. It's like JFK or Diana for kids: mother
<snip>

"Steve Irwin had such a profound impact on children that many parents believe his tragic death will be a landmark for kids in the way the deaths of John F Kennedy and Princess Diana were for adults.

Many younger Australians were grieving for the Crocodile Hunter as if they had lost a member of their own family, parents say.

"This guy has been in our lounge room for years," said one Sydney mother who has been consoling her tearful primary schooler since breaking the news the TV wildlife enthusiast had died after a stingray barb punctured his chest while filming off the Queensland coast."

4. There are 58 threads about Steve Irwin in the major forums.
It's an orgasm of navel-gazing. :eyes:

5. after I read the news last night on the internets
I came over to DU to see whether there was a single "hey, guess what" thread about it. Of all the deaths I would have expected to have caused such a ruckus, Steve Irwin's would have been about 1,743rd on my list.

Some people apparently feel that the guy was not enough of an environmentalist... okay, fine, maybe, I don't know, but whether he made the right choices in pursuing that particular ideal, he wasn't deliberately anti-environment. He was not a bad guy. I've read that he donated his profits from his shows to environmental causes--if true (and even if not, because he was certainly enthusiastic about sharing his love of animals), his intentions were wholly good. Unlike the intentions of those we should be talking about.

I simply do not understand why people who do not happen to lament his passing feel so strongly about inflicting their opinions on those who do, whether they regret his death on a purely human level or because they liked him and his work. It's not very kind.

6. Were you here the day Reagan died?
Things got ugly. I was no fan of Reagan's presidency by a long shot. But it was embarassing. It was like I was on Free Republic, and Clinton (or Dan Rather) had just died.
